STEREOTYPING OBESE TEENS

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Name: Tovier Salter, Joshua Jannette , Tyrah Davis , LaDaeshia MilliganCourse: Special Topics ( Social Action Project )

Background Information

When discussing about obesity you think of fat unhealthy as some may say.

Although when it comes down to stereotyping you also may think of judging a book by it’s cover. But lets take a closer look at these two objectives.

Behind the scenes obesity is rarely discussed or even addressed in high school let alone middle school.

Obesity in high school has a average of 30.4%. This is according to American Obesity Association. This means that 45.9% of teens are at risk for developing health issues due to weight.

Rather than obesity stereotyping is more complicated.

Stereotypy is a popular belief about specific types of individuals.

Stereotypes are standardized and simplified conceptions of people based on some prior assumptions.

Another name for stereotyping is bias. Stereotypes are also generalization about a group of people whereby people may attribute a defines set of characteristics to this group. These characteristics can be positive or negative.

Many people from these stereotyped groups can find this very disturbing as though they experience an apprehension.

Questions Concerns Is obese teens being stereotyped easily? How is the community effected by this? Should we observe how this project would fit within a whole community? How can this project change anything? Will this service / volunteering impact a life? How can we as teens help solve this problem? After the project how will this project affect the volunteer service?

Step By Step To Reach Success!!!

When beginning this project It starts off as goals what are the high standards that the group should reach every week.

Ms. Lopez has given our group named M.A.D. involved in volunteering in the local community. And also to choose a issue in which affect this generation.

After our research the project issue the group is excepted to give insight to the perspectives of the project and different points of view.

During this project we have made goals and reflections on which we have taken a step further to completing our project but yet to use “ Habit Of Heart”. These skills will help on our road to changing the community.

Plan A: Getting To Work

Now that we have researched the issue and have gotten important information toward volunteering it’s time to get started.

When starting, the service location was set to be at Cullen Middle School. At this location the plan was to give a presentation in which was rehearsed

over a amount of time. The presentation was performed giving insight on being obese and what are

the results of this. But also to show why and when being obese you are stereotyped as “ Fat “ or “ Unhealthy”.

Ensemble Theater was contacted over a period of time although we had to cancel the first plan of action.

Always Have Backup: Plan B

Plan A seemed to come to a end resulting in a backup. The back was known as our “ Plan B “. The new proposal w resubmitted given more information on what to expect

our group to accomplish in our volunteering to change an issue in the community.

Now that the new project is approved time to lend a hand. The new location of the social action project will be held at “ Empowerment

South Early College High School “. Being here the group will sponsor a “ World’ Biggest Winner Weight Loss

Day “. Contributing to this every member will be responsible for helping in exercise

at various station and or encouraging teen do better in eating habits so that they won’t be stereotyped.

During the project there will be healthy drinks and snack served. After completing the project there will be various prizes given for coming

and contributing to the issue, but yet showing how they are concerned about the issue in the community and want to change.
