Dear Davis Society Members,

A heartfelt thank you to all the individuals, corporations, foundations and organizations who are recognized in this inaugural year of the Davis Society.

We launched the Davis Society to celebrate the generosity of thosewho support the University of Wisconsin Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS). The incredible work would not be possible without these gifts. I am pleased to highlight just a few successes in the department:

This summer we welcomed our first integrated internship class by adding a fourth year of general medicine to the ophthalmology residency training program in partnership with the William S. Middleton Veteran’s Administration (VA) Hospital. Trainees will spend one-third of their VA Hospital general medicine internship year in ophthalmology training jump-starting their residency experience.

We designed a new retinal cell imaging technology to diagnose early and different types of retinal disorders, such as wet and dry macular degeneration, and hereditary retinal dystrophies like Best disease. We are developing teleophthalmology services to provide care for those with diabetic retinopathy living in rural Wisconsin communities, offering specialty care where it is not readily available.

Your role in our mission is paramount to our success - it can help us pursue ideas that may lead to the next sight-saving treatments.
