I. Spread of Islam

A. Muhammad dies -followers wanted everyone to follow Islam.

B. From Spain across North Africa and most of the modern Middle East into Central Asia and India.

C. The Arabs were traders and spread their religion.

II. Crusades

A. Late 1000’s the Turks/Muslim people from Central Asia gained control of Palestine.

B. Turks attack Asia Minor, part of the Byzantine Empire.

C. Constantinople in danger, appealed to Pope Urban II of Rome for help.

D. Pope Urban II was eager to gain back Palestine, ”the Holy Land”.

E. Crusades – a series of military expeditions to regain the holy land.

They would:

–“wear the cross of Christ on their right shoulder or back and with one voice…cry out ‘God wills it, God wills it, God wills it’.

–Thus began the Crusades.

–1. One third of the population of Europe died.

–3. Large gap between the classes. Upper accused the lower of spreading the disease.

You will be presenting these so make sure you are creative and have fun.

B. Silk Road most used-wanted silk cloth.

C. Most important route linking China, Central Asia, Persia, Western Asia, and Europe.
