As we complete the last three weeks of the school year, there's much to look forward to.

The Lower Scholars in grades 2-5 gave an outstanding performance in their Spring Concert Tuesday night. We're very proud of their accomplishments this year. The Middle and Upper School Concert is this evening at 6:30 in the St. Anthony Hall.

The Upper School Athletic Banquet is will take place this Friday at 6:30 pm. Our Upper School athletes performed exceptionally well in their sports this year, and we're looking forward to recognizing their individual and team accomplishments Friday evening.

Next Wednesday, May 23, following the 9:10 am Mass, we will recognize the outstanding academic achievements of our students throughout the school year at the Spring Awards ceremony.

The Atonement Academy Middle school boys, David, Christian,

& Dominik were selected for the ISAL All-Star baseball team.

The boys played with other All-Star selections from across the

city, and their team won 17-16. The boys did a great job on

representing The Atonement Academy!! Congratulations boys.

Parish Life

As the culmination of a science unit on plants, the third grade girls enjoyed designing and planting their own succulent container gardens.

One of the concepts presented in our science text is the fact that a plant’s structure enables it to thrive in a particular environment. As they worked with the succulents, the girls encountered real-life examples. The plants’ roots, for instance, grow close to the surface of the soil, making them well-positioned to soak up any rainfall; likewise, the waxy leaves and stems are well-suited for retaining moisture.

Throughout the project, the girls also had ample opportunity to marvel at the handiwork of God!

Subject: Latin I

Grade: 9th & 10th Grade

One of the most exciting aspects of history is that we get to explore the various

things humanity invented to achieve their goals. Some of those things were

horrible, some magnificent, some hilarious, some clever, and some a combination

of all four. Propaganda tends to fall into the latter category. Propaganda was

prominent during World War I. When we discussed the “Great War” in Western

Civ, we talked about the important role propaganda had to play in convincing men

around the world to join the war effort. Since it was a war without a real cause,

many countries, especially the United States, had to invent reasons for their men

to go to war and risk life and limb. We looked at propaganda posters from

different countries and discussed the different tactics each country used to

advertise the war effort. For example, England villainized the Germans, calling

them “huns” and portraying them as savages from which the brave British soldiers

needed to rescue the French. Germans, on the other hand, glorified the war calling

on all men to be heroes, while America called on everyone to do their part (save

food, give money) to bring democracy to the yet to be enlightened Europeans. The

students then made posters of their own. They picked a country and made a

propaganda poster for that country, either calling men to fight, or save on food, or

support the war effort, etc. They then presented those posters to the class,

explaining what the propaganda was for and why they designed it the way they

did. As you can see from the pictures, they were very creative and successful.

Loving GOD, as I begin this time of exams, I feel some anxiety and frustration. Help me to stay focused. Give me a clear mind, to perform to the very best of my ability. Help me to study with dedication and vigor. Grant me silence so that I may process the knowledge I have obtained. Let me sleep peacefully at night, so that I am refreshed and renewed for my upcoming exams. Be with me, gentle GOD, during these days. Undoubtedly, there will be moments when I want to quit and give up. Please sustain me, Holy One. Guide me during times of trouble. Help me be satisfied with the work I have done, but also help me to see areas that I may improve upon academically in the future. Loving GOD, hear my prayer.

Like all languages, Latin is not enjoyable until the students can relate it to real life. While learning vocabulary

and grammar structures can be enlightening and interesting, it is not until the students understand how to

use that in order to communicate that the language ceases to be a chore and instead becomes an exciting

talent. The 7th

graders discovered this when we learned to play “Simonus Dixit” or “Simon Says.” They

learned the different words for shoulders, ears, eyes, feet, hands, etc. as well as sitting down and standing

up. Not very exciting at first, but with that vocab, they were able to play a game speaking in Latin. They lost

themselves in the fun of playing and attempting to trick each other into doing something even though

Simonus didn’t say to do it. Now I get requests pretty regularly to play, “Simonus dixit.”

It is an honor being a faculty member of The Atonement Academy. This is my first-year on faculty teaching physical education and coaching athletics. I am alumni from The Atonement Academy graduating class of 2012, and I enjoy having the opportunity to inspire and impact these students lives in the same way that my teachers had done for me during my time at Atonement. Especially, helping our athletic program grow and thrive to its full potential. My journey back to The Atonement Academy began at Abilene Christian University (ACU), where I obtained my bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology concentrating in sport and recreational management. Currently, I am pursuing my master’s degree in Education from Hardin-Simmons University and will complete my degree by the end of summer 2018.

I am blessed to be able to teach and coach at the school that helped me grow physically, mentally and spiritually. My ultimate goal is to impact the youth spiritually, but also having them learn how to be competitive and intentional in their everyday lives. I am thankful to be a part of The Atonement Academy community and hope to continue to give back to help the future generations of alumni.
