Times
Last week was a busy time at the school, with many events taking place to showcase the talents of our students. Our lower school students in the 2nd-5th grades sang beautifully at their concert, as did the middle and upper scholars at theirs. We are very proud of the exceptional musical accomplishments of our students, and express our appreciation for the Music faculty we are so blessed to have at The Atonement Academy.
Our Athletic Department has been exceptional this year as well, helping our students sharpen not only their athletic abilities, but their character, teamwork, and leadership skills. We were pleased to recognize the many outstanding accomplishments of our middle and upper school athletes at the Athletic Banquet last Friday, and thank our excellent coaching staff for the many hours they devoted this year to train and encourage our student athletes.
Congratulations to our outstanding Kindergarten class on their graduation and promotion to 1st grade this week. Next Tuesday, we recognize our 8th graders in their promotion ceremony after the 9:10 am school Mass. All 8th grade boys will serve at this Mass, and the girls will sing in the choir. Later in the week, on Thursday, we will celebrate the senior's baccalaureate Mass and banquet, followed by commencement on Friday evening. We congratulate and pray for our 8th graders and seniors as they pass these important milestones in their education.
Dear Atonement Families,
Thank you, Mr. John Markovetz

CATHOLIC EDUCATION CATHOLIC EDUCATION CATHOLIC EDUCATION AT THE ATONEMENT ACADEMY
Teaching Objective Truth from God
If you were to ask the average person, “What’s the difference between
what is being taught at the local Catholic school and what is being taught
at the public school down the street?” the first answer that would come to
most people’s minds would be, “Religion.” It would seem obvious: the
Catholic faith is taught in a religion class in the Catholic schools, but not
in the public schools. “But,” we might ask, “is the addition of a religion
class to the regular academic subjects enough to make a school effectively
Catholic?”
The Church makes very clear the answer to that question. In a document
titled “Declaration on Christian Education” (a document of the Second
Vatican Council) Catholic schools are directed to integrate the Christian
faith into the whole pattern of human life in all its aspects. It states
strongly that Catholic educators are to strive "to relate all human culture
eventually to the news of salvation, so that the life of faith will illumine
the knowledge which students gradually gain of the world, of life, and of
mankind." What this means, then, is this: rather than seeing Catholic
education as merely the addition of a religion course to the usual academic
subjects, we want our students to understand that all truth comes from
God, and so they should be taught to make Christian sense out of what
they learn in their natural science, math, and history courses, in their study
of art, music, and literature. While this principle is clearly stated in the
documents of the Second Vatican Council, and in many other places, this
vision remains largely unrealized in Catholic education today.
This is why The Atonement Academy was founded. The vision for the
Academy includes the complete implementation of the Church’s
expectation for Catholic schools; namely, that knowledge of the truth is
not something compartmentalized, but is a presentation of a unified
understanding of all truth as being objective and from God. We teach that
which is true for all people, in all places, and at all times.

The Men’s and Women’s Chorale competed in the Alamo
Music Showcase on May 4th. Both groups took home Superior
Ratings as well as Best in Class for their respected divisions.
This is the first year that both Men’s and Women’s competed
in a competition. Due to the outstanding talent we have in
our High School, we have had the opportunity to perform for
Mass a piece that required all high school women to sing, and
then another piece that required all high school men to sing.
If you were fortunate enough to come to Mass this past
Monday, then you heard Ave Maria performed by all high
school men. This Thursday all high school women will be
combined to perform Cantate Domino at the 9:00 AM Mass.
This will also be the last time that all high school senior men
will serve for our daily school Mass. It has been a pleasure to
conduct and teach all of these wonderful students this year.

My name is Jenni Gray and this is my first year teaching at The Atonement Academy. I teach life science, biology, AP biology, and Sacred Scripture. I first realized I wanted to teach when I was in 6th grade and it has been a desire of mine ever since. This desire probably initiated from my family. My mom, dad, and brother are all very inquisitive people so
you can say a desire to learn is in my genes.
Prior to my time at The Atonement Academy I went to college at
Franciscan University of Steubenville where I majored in biology and political science and minored in theology. While at Franciscan I also had the opportunity to be on the university’s cross country and track teams. Thanks to this, I have also been able to coach Atonement Academy’s
middle school cross country team. After leaving Franciscan, I spent some time doing biomedical research at Eastern Virginia Medical School.
When I’m not teaching or running I enjoy spending time with my little adorable mutt, Princess Buttercup (yes named after “Princess Bride” and I probably can quite it from start to finish). I truly feel blessed to be a teacher at The Atonement Academy and cannot wait to continue teaching next year!
Middle School Latin is designed so that Middle
Scholars familiarize themselves with the Latin language
in an approachable way. Nearing the end of the year, I
gave the Eighth Grade students a project: create a
diagram of a Roman theater.
Along with lectures on
Roman theater and oratory,
this project helped them to
visualize Ancient Rome as
something tangible, and it
was a fun way to learn the
vocabulary for their last test of
the year. Further, I am continually amazed by the artistic
abilities of the students at The Atonement Academy,
and their efforts on these projects were no exception.

The fifth grade girls researched an assigned state. They took notes on
important information relating to landforms, products from the state,
largest cities, and famous people from the states. Additionally they
researched state birds, trees,
mammals, and slogans. The notes
were converted into a building
blocks display. Next the fifth
graders listened to tall tales and
listed the qualities necessary to
make a story a tall tale.
Afterwards, the scholars wrote
tall tales which had heroes who were specific to the states they
researched. These tales incorporated some of the facts which were
discovered during the students’ research. Finally, the tall tales heroes
were illustrated by their student creators.
