Latest Cruise NewsP&O Cruises to name new ship Britannia Due to enter service in spring 2015. P&O Cruises and Carnival UK chief executive David Dingle said the name of the ship reflected a “rediscovered pride in our country”. Britannia will capture both the contemporary spirit of P&O Cruises and the spirit of Britain today.

Royal Caribbean ‘could base Oasis-class ship in Mediterranean’ The line’s president and chief executive officer Adam Goldstein said the cruise line was ‘pleasantly surprised’ by the reaction to Oasis of the Seas’ micro-season in the Mediterranean next autumn. Oasis, which holds 6,400 passengers when full, will be operating two five-night cruises from Barcelona and a seven-night voyage from the Spanish port to Rotterdam in September 2014 will be the first time an Oasis-class ship has sailed in Europe. Goldstein confirmed 2015-16 itineraries would be revealed in early 2014.

Mayor of Liverpool speaks of desire for more berths at cruise terminal The Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, spoke of his desire to have more berths at the city cruise terminal as he helped to open this year’s Columbus Day. Currently the city has two berths which can be used for both turnaround and transit calls. Anderson said: “You can place a cruise ship right at the heart of our city. I want more cruise berths. We have two but I want more. He said he wanted to have so much interest in the city that cruise liners were queuing and waiting to come in.

The South American Discovery

Ancient empiresDespite the fact it was discovered in 1503 by European settlers, South America still holds the same promise of adventure and the unknown that it did over 500 years ago. Prior to colonisation by the Europeans, the continent had a great history of ancient empires spanning back thousands of years, and these ancient cultures are still visible in modern day South America. The most well known are the ancient Incas, whose estate of Machu Picchu, high in the Andes, is one of the wonders of the world. Whilst many indigenous tribes dating back before records began, still reside within the largely unexplored Amazon rainforest.

Music & danceIt is no exaggeration to say that music forms the heart and soul of South American culture and traditions. The ancient traditional pan-pipe music of the Andes, called Huayno, dates back to the ancient Inca civilisations; Whilst the African inspired samba beat of Brazil and the European flavour of the Tango in Argentina are the most famous. Throughout the region you’re likely to hear a new sound, learn new dance and discover a new culture inspired by the music. Other favourites well worth a listen are the Caribbean flavour of Soca, and of course the classic Bossa Nova, and the Lambada!

Natural beautyIn terms of aesthetics, it is the sheer diversity of natural wonders within South America that is breathtaking. Across the continent you can experience the aqua-blue waters, white-sand beaches, dense tropical jungles, snow-capped mountains, colonial towns, glaciers, vast expanses of desert and magnificent rivers – the contrasts within a single country can almost defy belief.

WildlifeThere is no doubt that South America has one of the, if not THE most diverse selection of wildlife on the planet. The range of animals throughout the region is vast – whales, penguins, giant tortoises, rare birds, creepy crawlies, sharks! You name the species and it’s more than likely that you can find it in South America. The Amazon rainforest is home to over a tenth of the world’s wildlife and new species are being discovered every week; the Galapagos Islands are a nature lover’s dream; whilst the Pantanal, a vast wetland, is home to more species of bird than any other region on earth.

Your adventure begins with two nights in the spectacular Andean backed Santiago and draws to a close in Argentina’s European-style Buenos Aires with a Tango Show. Ahead of the impending worldwide exposure of South America, we look at the history of the continent and the main attractions and cultural nuances across the 12 countries that lie within it’s borders.
