New Year’s Eve
Pastor’s Paragraphs
My Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Well, Thanksgiving is in the “rear-view mirror” and now the
“Christmas season” is officially in full swing! It never fails to
amaze me how we – as Americans – seamlessly go from “being
thankful” to “for Christmas I want . . .”. There seems to be a
substantial disconnect there that we overlook. (Especially those
who trample on others, get in fights, and make a public spectacle
of themselves the day after Thanksgiving – Black Friday.)
At any rate, let me ask you this question – what are you
celebrating this Christmas? Now, I know that a lot of folks
(inside and outside of the church) would give me the canned
answer, “We’re celebrating Jesus, of course!” – but I know
that’s not completely true. You see, to celebrate Jesus we don’t
need trees, presents, lights, snow, fake snow, reindeer, cookies,
parties, or even a fat guy in a red suit. Celebrating Jesus has
nothing to do with a new car, new clothes, a new video-game
system, new golf gear, new hunting gear, ties, perfume, or trips
to Grandma’s house. To celebrate Jesus, all you need is a
thankful, loving heart that is devoted to Jesus. I know that this is
simple stuff, but it’s important.
The Bible teaches us that how we behave reveals what we
believe. Jesus says in Matthew 7:16, “By their fruit you will
recognize them . . .” – and that’s true for believers and non-
believers alike. What that means is that if you don’t celebrate
Jesus on March 16th, or July 21st, or October 10th, you’re
probably not going to celebrate Him on December 25th. If you
want to celebrate Jesus, you can do it at home, or in your car, or
at work, or in the Sanctuary (every Sunday morning at 11:00
a.m., Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m., and Wednesday evening at
6:45 p.m.). Celebrating Jesus is a daily-life thing – not
something that we save on a shelf for the end of each calendar
year.
If all the trimmings were gone – if all we had to give and
receive is love, laughter, smiles and hugs – we would still have
plenty to celebrate! The message of the angels still rings out,
loud and clear, for all those who have ears to hear: “Do not be
afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the
people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to
you; he is Christ the Lord.” – (Luke 2:10-11)
Starting today, let’s celebrate anew – and share the message
that the world is still waiting to hear!
May God bless us all – and Merry Christmas!
Celebrating Jesus,
Brother Kevin
