RCIA is the name we give to the process that guides people in their decision to enjoy

full communion with the Catholic Church. It stands for RITE OF

CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS and is composed of a series of sessions bringing

people together to experience the prayer life of the Church as well as to learn about its doc-

trines and teachings. Using the Bible, the Sacred Liturgy as well as the Catechism of the

Catholic Church, participants prepare themselves to receive the sacraments of Baptism,

Confirmation and the Eucharist. The sessions begin on September 14 and conclude with the

celebration Christ’s death and resurrection at Easter. If you are interested in knowing more,

contact Mark Ciolli at [email protected]

MUSIC AT THE BASILICA

MUSIC FOR THE TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The hymn Draw Us in the Spirit's Tether, was written in 1945 by one of America's more influential church musicians of the 20th century, Harold Friedell (1905-1958). The beloved hymn, with text by English theologian and author Percy Deamer (1867-1936), is often sung as a choral anthem in Roman Catholic churches as well as churches of other Christian denominations; it is also an opportunity for a little bit of New York sacred music history.

Born in Queens, New York on May 11, 1905, the young Harold began his church music career as the organist at the Methodist Church of Jamaica, Long Island before eventually serving on the faculties at the Julliard School of Music, the Guilmant Organ School (at First Presbyterian on Fifth Ave.), and later teaching composition and improvisation at the School of Sacred Music of Union Theological Seminary in New York (which later became the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, headed up by Dr. Robert Baker from First Presbyterian). Friedell served as organist-choirmaster at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Jer-sey City Heights, New Jersey and later at New York’s Calvary Episcopal Church, where the dynamic The Rev. Samuel Moor Shoemaker served as rector. During his tenure at Calvary, Friedell founded a series of oratorio concerts and recitals that firmly established Calvary’s name in Church music history. It was also during this time that his famous anthem Draw Us in the Spirit's Tether was written as a com-munion hymn for Pentecost Sunday 1945. By 1946, his work at Calvary had drawn critical acclaim and he was asked to succeed his mentor and teacher, David McK. Williams, as organist-choirmaster at Park Avenue’s St. Bartholomew’s Church. From 1946 until his death in 1958, throngs of people flocked to St. Bart’s to hear the superb profession-al choir of 70 voices (!!) sing weekly Sunday afternoon services (Evensong) where the great choral rep-ertoire of oratorios, passions, requiems, and recently composed works were performed in their entirety following the sung propers of the daily office. ____________________________________________________________________________________________

His Holiness, Pope Francis, will be trav-eling to the United States for the first time since becoming Pope to attend the World Meeting of Families, taking place on September 26th and 27th, in Philadelphia. Held every three years, this international event emphasizes the im-portance of family in Catholic life.

The Archdiocese of New York is filled with joy that His Holiness has added our beloved city to his agenda and will be able to visit with us for a short time. The Pope's first stop will be our nation's capital, Washington, D.C., where he will be welcomed by the Archdiocese of Washington. Here is the Pope’s itinerary while in New York: Thursday, September 24 5:00 pm Arrive at John F. Kennedy International Airport 6:45 pm Evening Prayer (Vespers) at St. Patrick's Cathedral

Friday, September 25 8:30 am Visit to the United Nations and Address to the United Nations General Assembly 11:30 am Multi-religious service at 9/11 Memorial and Museum, World Trade Center 4:00 pm Visit to Our Lady Queen of Angels School, East Harlem 6:00 pm Mass at Madison Square Garden

Saturday, September 26 8:40 am Departure John F. Kennedy International Airport

How to get tickets to see the Pope? Tickets for the Mass at Madison Square Garden will not be sold and they will be extremely limited. Pope Francis will only be in the Archdiocese of New York for a very brief time, and tickets will be limited for any events. We do expect to distribute tickets to parishes and other Catholic organizations and institutions throughout the archdiocese, who will then extend invitations to their members. As soon as we know how many tickets are being allocated to St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral , we will hold a equitable “drawing “ from all

the names of people who have submitted a request for a ticket. No tickets will be publicly available through any other means so, if interested, keep watching for further a announcement here or on our website - www.oldcathedral.org
