His Holiness, Pope Francis, will be traveling to the United States for the first time since becoming Pope to attend the World Meeting of Families, tak-ing place on September 26th and 27th, in Philadel-phia. Held every three years, this international event emphasizes the importance of family in Cath-olic life.

The Archdiocese of New York is filled with joy that His Holiness has added our beloved city to his agenda and will be able to visit with us for a short

time. The Pope's first stop will be our nation's capital, Washington, D.C., where he will be welcomed by the Archdiocese of Washington. Here is the Pope’s itinerary while in New York: Thursday, September 24 5:00 pm Arrive at John F. Kennedy International Airport 6:45 pm Evening Prayer (Vespers) at St. Patrick's Cathedral

We do ex-pect to distribute tickets to parishes and other Catholic organizations and institu-tions throughout the archdiocese, who will then extend invitations to their mem-bers. As soon as we know how many tickets are being allocated to St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral , we will hold a equitable “drawing “ from all the names of people who have submitted a request for a ticket. MUSIC AT THE BASILICA

MUSIC FOR THE SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The Offertory this week is based on one of the five beautiful hymns St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) composed in honor of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament at Pope Urban IV's (1261-1264) request, when the Pope first established the Feast of Corpus Christi in 1264. The hymn is found in the Roman Missal as a prayer of thanksgiving after Mass. The chant itself is of unknown origin from the first millennium. Also, listen carefully to the beautiful Communion Antiphon, or Communio, this week:

Honora Dominum de tua subsubstantia, et de primitiis frugum tuarum: et implebuntur horrea tua saturitate, et vino torcularia redundabunt.

Dom Johner has this to say of the antiphon:

These four phrases are like so many strophes of an intimate and appealing song, one over which the good odor of the earth, the fragrance of gardens and of fresh wine seems to hover . . . Clearness and joy characterize the melody, rather than solemnity. Holy Communion is the life-giving bread, the never-failing wine which gives strength to the soul.

John Murrett has this to say about this antiphon: ‘Give honor to the Lord with what you have, and with the first of your fruits; then your barns will be filled with abundance, and your wine presses will run over with wine.' There are two commands in the first part of this song, and then two promises. It is God the Father speaking to us, telling us that if we are mindful of Him, He will reward beyond measure our offerings of sacrifice. In our offertory we gave ourselves, and now in holy Communion God gives us back our gifts, consecrated–Himself entirely. The music also seems to accentuate the four divisions: the simplicity of honora Dominum is followed by the heights to which we may reach with our gifts; but then God goes still higher (impleantur horrea), piling up His gifts for us. The limpid flow of the last phrase seems to portray the wine running through the presses. Perhaps we can best sum up today's liturgy (both words and music) in this thought: we should continually praise God for the benefits that have come to us since our baptism. We have risen with Christ to a life of generosity in His service. God's arm is not shortened rewarding us.

A woman by the name of Jane MacMillan, who lives in Manchester, New Hampshire sent this illustration to us last week. She found it an old family Bible published in 1871. It depicts “St. Patrick’s Cathedral” as it looked before the devastating fire of 1866. However, contrary to the caption in the illustration, the church was not destroyed. In fact, since was still the cathedral the roof and interior were rapidly rebuilt so that services resumed in 1868. The

sanctuary of the church is now being restored to as close to its 1868 appearance as possible. The view here is the front of the church with a view from Mott Street. Notice how the steeple and stained glass window are no longer present. Also the two structures on the right and left have been replaced with niches that were probably meant to contain statues at some future time. The image on the bottom have of the illustration is the cathedral as it appeared after the re-construction of 1868. The view is from the corner of Mulberry and Prince Streets. The only real difference from today is the construction of the “bell tower” on the southeast corner which was done in 1906 in time to celebrate the 100 Anniversary. Last week, the tower and bell were removed temporarily so that the structure and bell can be restored. Yes, the bell will ring again in time for our 200th Anniver-sary Celebration on November 22.
