MESSAGES FROM MRS MUSUMECI Term 4 has started off in a very settled manner with very few orange/red cards issued in the first two weeks. Children are engaged in their learning, are being challenged and extended, providing very little time to be off task. Teachers are equally settled and focused with their eyes firmly on the end of year reading targets, supporting and extending everyone child to reach and exceed the targets. All staff spent time on the School Development day analyzing NAPLAN and off years NAPLAN along with school based assessments to develop action plans to improve academic outcomes between now and the end of this term.
BOOK AWARDS AND CHRISTMAS CONCERT
Due to the increasing size of the school, we have separated these two events. The Christmas Concert will be held at the Salvation Army Hall and the Book Awards assembly will be held at school in the final assembly of the year.
CLASS LISTS FOR 2018 Planning is underway for 2018 and in the next two weeks, proposed classes will be drafted. Parents are requested to inform the school office if your child/children will not be returning to Challis in 2018. With your assistance, we can ensure that we are using accurate
numbers to predict classes which means we start 2018 with no need to restructure classes part way through the term. This is very important to the overall smooth running of the school.
CHALLIS ANGELS
Our wonderful Challis Angels continue to volunteer their time to assist teachers by preparing booklets, photocopying, laminating etc. For the rest of this term, there will be an in-crease in the amount of tasks that teachers need assistance with as we prepare for the start of 2018. If any parents have time available, especially on Mondays, we would love you to join the Angels in the staffroom on Monday mornings to support the teachers by reducing their significant workload.
We very much appreciate all of the support that our parent community provides us.
SPARE UNIFORMS If you have any uniforms at home your children have outgrown we would appreciate any donations. Please bring them to the school office.
Thank You

KAYA FROM KARTAJIN DANJOO TEAM (LEARNING TOGETHER TEAM) Launch of Girl’s Academy. (Extract from the Examiner Newspaper Thursday 19th October)
A program that supports and empowers Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls launched at Challis Community Primary School this week. The Girls Academy is an Australia-wide program run largely by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women at more than 30 schools. Girls Academy staff work with groups of children as mentors to engage them in sport, culture and empowerment activities. The program targets improving school attendance, academic and personal achievement and graduation rates among Indigenous girls. For high school students it also provides assistance with post-school transitioning into university, TAFE or work. Challis Community Primary School will be the first primary school to host the program and the Challis launch event included speeches by Challis Community Primary School principal Lee Musumeci, Member for Armadale Tony Buti, Armadale mayor Henry Zelones, and a traditional dance per-
formed by Kiara Girls Academy students. Mrs Musumeci said she was hopeful the program would have a big impact on the school’s indigenous girls and their families. “Together we can make sure you have a good experience when you get to school,” she said. “We’re here to support you and walk alongside you and your families to make sure you have excellent opportunities in your life. “Aim high, achieve well and think big.” The organisation currently supports 2000 Australian girls but hoped to increase that number to 3500 by 2019.
Challis Community Primary School had more than 120 Indigenous students in 2016 and Challis Girls Academy program manager Shantelle Cox said she was looking forward to her first experience supporting primary school students. “When Challis Community Primary School was chosen as a site for Girls Academy I saw much potential for it to be a strategy to engage and keep Aboriginal girls in school,” she said. “The motto for Girls Academy is Develop a Girl – Change the Community.” Challis student Breanna Avsar, 12, said one of her main motivations returning to school this term was to get involved with Girls Academy. “By being part of the Girls Academy family I have been able to participate in leadership training and lots of other exciting activities,” she said. The program officially launched at the school on October 16. A similar program will also launch at Cecil Andrews College this week.
PERTH WILDCATS BALL KID As part of our partnership with the Perth
Wildcats we have been offered the opportunity to select a child from our school who has shown the ‘Challis Way’ to be a ‘Ball Kid’. As a Ball Kid you will receive 4 tickets for family/friends to attend a Wildcats home game. The ‘Ball Kid’ receives a t shirt and presents the game ball to the referees and has a photo taken on court. Joshua Macneall from M5 was chosen by Mrs Musumeci to be Challis’s first Ball Kid on Saturday 7th October. Joshua had an amazing time and as a respected member of the Challis community and huge basketball fan he was a worthy representative of Challis Community Primary School. During the Wildcats 2017/2018 season we will be given more opportunities to select children to take part in the Ball Kid Program. Mrs Musumeci would like all children to strive to show the ‘Challis Way’ every day and she will be on the lookout for the next ball kid to represent Challis.
