BUS CHANGES: CHICKERELL EVENING BUS AND SUNDAY SERVICE TO STOP: First Wessex has announced it is to axe to No 8 Chickerell to Weymouth route after 7.30pm Monday to Saturday and there will no longer be a Sunday service. There will also be longer to wait between buses when they are running – 30 minutes if you just miss one. The changes come into effect for the winter from November 19th.

TRAINS: South Western Railway is also proposing to cut from two to one the direct service to London each hour from Weymouth, missing out some stations on the route, with a new through service to Portsmouth instead of the second direct service to London. Comments are invited on this plan by December 22nd. For full details see: www.southwesternrailway.com/timetableconsultation

********************************************************************************************HELP THE ANIMALS FESTIVE APPEAL: Christmas is creeping up on us and we would like to ask the residents of Chickerell and their family and friends if they would help the rescued animals at Margaret Green Rescue Centres with a toy, food, biscuits, treats, old towels, anything to give the animals a nice Christmas. We had a fantastic response last year. Hopefully we can do it again this year. Please drop off anything you can for a dog, cat, rabbit, hamster etc,. To 43 Lower Way, Chickerell, or if not, we can pick it up. Just call Rosie or Yvonne on 01305 781059. The Margaret Green charity has also opened a shop in Weymouth in St Thomas Street, opposite School Street, so any bric a brac, clothes etc., would be very welcome: “We wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a very Happy New Year and the animals a loving home in 2018. All the best to you all and a big thank you.”

From Rosie, Yvonne and Jess the dog. ********************************************************************************************NEWS FROM DORSET TRADING STANDARDS: Turning back the clocks: Changing the mileage on a car, ‘car clocking’, is on the rise, says Dorset Trading Standards. It is thought this could be because more cars have digital odometers: “Businesses can offer mileage adjustment services which will alter the mileage if a reading gets corrupted. Currently this service is legal but the EU is looking to make it an illegal practice by May 2018.Under the Consumer Rights Act 2016 traders can be prosecuted for changing odometer readings. A case in the north west earlier this year saw over 100 cars have their mileage adjusted amounting to 7.5 million ‘lost’ miles. The prison sentences for those involved ranged from 15 months to three years.“When buying a second hand car there are things that you can look out for: Chips on the paintwork may indicate lots of motorway driving and high mileage; worn rubber pedals, steering wheels and seat belts indicate lots of use;check the mileage on old MOT certificates and service history; ask the previous keeper what the mileage was when they sold it and remember the average car travels 10,000 miles a year so if the car has more wear and tear than expected it may have been ‘clocked’. “You can check MOTs on line at https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history. Information held by the DVLA about a vehicle’s identity can be found at https://www.gov.uk/get-vehicle-information-from-dvla. Finally, look out for trading standards approved car retailers displaying the Buy with Confidence logo, or visit the website www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk You can also call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06 for advice on buying a second-hand car, or to report something to trading standards.”

********************************************************************************************FESTIVAL NEWS: The 2018 Weymouth and Dorset Music Festival will take place on Saturday 3rd March at Budmouth Technology College. Anyone who plays an instrument or sings, whether solo or in a band or choir, is warmly invited to enter the festival - it is a great opportunity to show off your talents, and to get some encouragement and constructive feedback from our expert adjudicators. The closing date for entries is 28th January 2018 (though late entries may be admitted at the committee’s discretion). You can find full information and entry forms at www.weymouthmusicfestival.co.uk If you would like to come and listen to some excellent local musicians, a full day’s festival pass, including programme, is available for £5 on the day, £7 for a family.

PLAN ON ITS WAY: Below is a draft of the front page of the neighbourhood plan questionnaire which should be coming through your letterbox soon. Chickerell Town Council requests that as many comments as possible are returned so that everyone has a chance to comment on the future of the area before the end of November.

The idea is comments made will help the town council determine the policies to be included in the plan, which in turn will shape the future development of the area. The Chickerell Neighbourhood Plan is, says the council, ‘a new way for locals to influence the planning and development of the area’ and this one ‘should last until 2036’.

********************************************************************************************REMEMBRANCE FOR 2017Lamp Post PoppiesA big THANK YOU to all who supported the Lamp Post Poppies event, especially to the Turks Head Inn, My Kutz hairdressers, St. Mary’s Church and the Council Offices. Total raised £276.05, which was donated to the Royal British Legion. Poppy boxes with poppies, badges, bracelets etc., are now in the above venues and in Chickerell and Charlestown Post Offices, Chickerell Library, Pharmacy, and Surgery, The Lugger Inn, Victoria Inn, Knights in the Bottom and Moonfleet Manor from 28th October until 12th November, Remembrance Sunday. Your support for this charity is much appreciated.

Pat Arthars, local poppy appeal organiser********************************************************************************************SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE: On Sunday 12th November Chickerell Methodist Church will be joining St Mary’s Church for a joint Service of Remembrance. The service starts at the Methodist Church (led by Pam Woodland), progresses to the War Memorial by 11am and continues in St Mary’s Church (led by Fr Jeremy Brading). Everyone is welcome to join us for all or part of the service to remember the fallen of the two World Wars and more recent conflicts.

The plan should:• Identify and protect

local green spaces• Look at possible

shortcomings in infrastructure (eg., roads)

• Determine where new homes and other developments might be built

• Influence the type of development that is built

Once approved, the plan and its policies will, says the town council, ‘have legal force’ in setting out what and where any development is acceptable within the council area.

********************************************************************************************NEWS EXTRA – From Age UK Dorchester. The charity is urging older people who feel lonely to come along to its social club. It has revamped its Day Centre/Social Club and says it caters for a variety of people and needs, including providing social contact and stimulation; reducing isolation and loneliness, helping independence; providing a break for carers and offering activities such as indoor bowling, art, quizzes, board games and reminiscence activities. The charity says day services can really play a vital role in combating social isolation and loneliness, both for people living alone and people living with others. Social contact may reduce stress, and even if physical difficulties are faced, just contact with others can help. Age UK Dorchester’s Social Club is open four days a week at Rowan Cottage in Dorchester, 9.30am to 3pm, including a home-cooked lunch. Anyone who would like to attend or volunteer for one day a week, should contact Lisa Holmes on 01305 269444. Editor’s note: Don’t forget there are lots of activities in Chickerell to join in with too – let us know of any more!

NEWS REPORT FROM CHICKERELL TOWN COUNCIL monthly meeting – OctoberPlanning Applications discussedHouses at Marquis of Granby: Town councillors discussed a plan to build two detached houses, shown on diagrams as one of three bedrooms and one of four bedrooms, on the grassed play area at the side of the Marquis of Granby pub. They recommended by a majority that the plan was approved, subject to clarification of off road vehicle access. Plan for home next to 538 Chickerell Road: A majority of councillors recommended refusal of plans for a home on a patch of land off Chickerell Road which currently has a footpath through it. Some councillors felt it was overdevelopment of the site, expressed concern over the future of the footpath, which was shown to be re-routed to the side, queried whether it would be outside the development boundary and expressed concern about its visual impact. Fish and Chip sign: Plans for an illuminated sign in the fish and chip shop on the old Charlestown Motors site were recommended for approval by councillors, subject to the light being switched off at night, 30 minutes after closing time. 292 new homes plan off School Hill: Councillors agreed to look in detail at this plan at a special town council meeting at the beginning of November because of the large amount of consultation documents to review. The discussion will then be reported to the town council’s next monthly meeting on November 21st .

Changes to the bus service into WeymouthCouncillors agreed to contact First Bus about its planned cuts to the Chickerell bus service from November. There are going to be no buses on Sundays and the daily service (Monday to Saturday) will be cut to two buses an hour. The X53 will also no longer be running on Sundays. Concern was raised over people working in shops in Weymouth who relied on the Sunday service to get to work. The idea was raised that if there could be at least two buses in the mornings on Sundays and two in the afternoon that would help residents. It was generally felt that to go from what ‘had been such a reliable service to nothing, was a shock’.

OUR NORTHERN VALE by Stan GrovesThis is my favourite time of year, just right for an October stroll, which started at West Shilveringhampton. As we arrive at the junction of Cheese Lane we very much feel the pleasure of being in the lowest part of the Waddon Vale; turning east and then south towards East Shilveringhampton. After a while we turn and walk back, and after passing under what was the tunnel of the branch line which led to Abbotsbury from Weymouth, we stroll through the hamlet of Coryates. This takes us up to the main Ridgeway. Even now we still see several wild flowers and plants in this lane and spot the ‘Old Man’s Beard’, very prominent on the hedgerows, seemingly spreading itself over as though protecting the green for the oncoming winter. At the junction between Friar Waddon and Little Waddon, we gaze to the west and see Waddon House; beyond that is Winters Lane, which leads into Portesham. As we stroll back (thankfully downhill), we realise that we have only met one other walker, two tractors and one car, and feel the peace of near solitude in this lovely area. This poem by John Clare, which was written in1825, is just one of many that he wrote about the seasons. It is called Autumn:

The Autumn day it fades away,The fields are wet and dreary; The rude storm takes the flowers of May,And nature seemeth weary. The Partridge coveys shunning fate,Hide in the bleaching stubble; And many a Bird without its mate,Mourns over its lonely trouble.

On Hawthornes shine the crimson awe,Where Spring brought May-day blossoms;Decay is natures cheerless law,Life’s winter in our bosoms ,The fields are brown and naked all,But hedges still are green; But storms shall come at Autumns fall,And not a leaf be seen!

Yet happy love that warms the heart,Through darkest storms severe;Keeps many a tender flower to start,-When Spring shall re appear, Affections hope shall roseys meet;Like those of Summer bloom;---And joys, and Flowers, smell as sweet,In seasons yet to come

*******************************************************************************************NATURE NOTES – What has been seen around Chickerell: Ivy is a really important late season nectar source for many insects and, if you’ve got some near you it’s worth a second look, as it can be covered in insects. Honey bees are a classic, and there can sometimes be so many of them that the whole plant appears to buzz! Red Admiral butterflies are another. This butterfly hibernates as an adult, emerging in the early spring sunshine, so that late season nectar is fuel to get them through the winter. It is believed, however, that many of them don’t make it and our summer population is bolstered by animals that have migrated here from the continent. Many will try to fly back as winter sets in, so ivy-laced fuel will serve them well. Remarkable to think that something so tiny can fly across the channel, isn’t it!

GREEN WOODPECKERAn unusual sighting (or, more accurately, a ‘hearing’, as it was the laughing call that drew our attention to it), by the school, was a Green Woodpecker. These birds are ant specialists, so, not surprisingly, are found where ants are, so they can be seen in larger gardens (and the school playing field is quite big!) but adults tend to show quite a degree of fidelity to their home range. Youngsters, on the other hand, tend to disperse in the autumn, looking for their own territory, so this bird may well have been one of this year’s young looking to set up home.

MIGRANT BIRDSAutumn sees everything on the move, not just young birds leaving their homes to find their own, but millions of birds leaving to head south, and millions more arriving from the north to spend the winter here. The first winter thrushes have already been seen in the east of the county and, by the time you read this, I expect they will have arrived in West Dorset. Listen out, at night, for the thin, ‘pipping’ call of the Redwing. It is their contact call as they migrate, helping the flock keep in touch. The starlings have also been gathering in their flocks for some time now, with little groups of them around the village. As winter draws on they will start to roost together, and, if you are lucky, you will see the swirling behaviour called a murmuration, as the birds wheel and whirl prior to going to roost. A lovely sight at the end of a cold winter’s day!

Thank you to Judy of Charlestown who sent us in a note to say she had seen a Wheatear along with a Pied Wagtail and Robin, all in the same corner of Victory Hall car park. A nice record to have; the Wheatear would have been on its way home as it is a summer migrant.

NICK’S NOTES ON THE NIGHT SKY:In our day to day life we are not really conscious of motion on a grand scale. We are all aware of the world rushing past when we are driving, but that motion is somewhat insignificant when compared with celestial speed. The earth, for instance, spins on its axis once in 24 hours, and it has a circumference of a little under 25,000 miles, so it needs to rotate at over 1,000 mph to do one full turn in a day. At the same time, it is orbiting round the Sun; a journey of some 600 million miles, meaning the Earth is moving through space at around 67,000 mph to make it round in a year. Little wonder then, that those bits of dust that make up meteorites, (and which give us such amazing meteor showers) burn up when we hit them at that speed!

MOTIONBut all that motion has other implications. The seasons, for instance, are a direct result of the Earth’s orbit round the Sun (and to its orbital tilt). Perhaps bizarrely the northern hemisphere’s winter happens when the Earth is closest to the Sun, but the tilt means the northern half is pointing away from it, hence the winter. That orbital movement is also responsible for changing what we can see in the night sky, the celestial seasons!

THE PLEIADESWe talked about open clusters last month, with the Double Cluster in Perseus being a perfect example, but there is an even easier one visible in the winter night sky (those celestial seasons make winter the best time to see it) and that is the Pleiades. It’s quite easy to find; use the finder chart in last month’s Contact to find Perseus, and then look ‘under’ his right foot; there you’ll find the ‘big dipper’ like Pleiades, or the seven sisters, wonderful with the naked eye on a dark night, simply stunning through binoculars. The cluster is around 125 million years old (so the stars were formed when dinosaurs ruled the Earth) and lies around 440 light years away.

VENUS AND JUPITEROf course, the other planets also move around the solar system and when, relative to sun, they are close to the Sun, they are invisible to us. Venus is heading that way, while Jupiter is heading away and, on the morning on the 13th

of the month they will be very close to each other, and to the Sun. They will make a super sight on the pre-sunrise sky but, if you do take a look, please be VERY careful. One glimpse of the sun through a pair of binoculars or a telescope could cause serious eye damage – so best left viewing with the naked eye!

A LOOK BACK TO CONTACT NOVEMBER 1985

• The Editor said he attended the BP Exhibition at the Victory Hall and said the BP staff were ‘very helpful and assured me there would be no tankers tied up to posts at Chickerell Hive’. (Editor’s note: This was concerning a plan to have an oil pipeline from Wytch Farm to Crookhill with the oil then pumped to a tanker moored in Portland Harbour which we reported in the October 1985 look back last month).

• Chickerell Monday Club was planning a Pippadee Clothing Party at the beginning of November.• Derek and Carol of the Elm Tree Inn announced there would no longer be a bonfire or firework display on

November 5th in 1985 ‘due mainly to the excessive cost of fireworks’. John and Andrea at The Lugger announced their party would be going ahead.

• There was a big plea in Contact this month for help at Chickerell Youth Club on Thursday evenings: ‘Occasional help would be most welcome’.

• Chickerell with Fleet Mothers Union was planning a Christmas shopping expedition to Poole at the beginning of December 1985.

• The Parish Council announced in Contact that it had three sets of unserviceable swing chains for disposal: “They were taken down from the play area equipment as it was considered that they may have become unsafe’. Tenders were invited from anyone who wanted them as long as the purchaser signed a declaration to the effect that ‘he or she realises the chains are unserviceable’.

• A report from the Amberlights Majorettes stated the group collected five trophies in the most recent competition and was also judged ‘the best dressed troupe overall’.
