A Message from the Music Director

Dear Friends,

Once again it is my pleasure and privilege to introduce you to our unbelievably exciting and eclectic season. All of us at The Collegiate Chorale, the singers, the staff and our wonderful board, feel that this season promises to be memorable and full of surprises. We open on October 26 as guests of The American Symphony Orchestra honoring their fiftieth anniversary with a performance of Mahler’s 8th Symphony and Charles Ives’s 4th Symphony. There will be a chorus of over 200 singing these masterful works conducted by my friend and colleague Leon Botstein at Carnegie Hall. Then American soprano Angela Meade will be singing the title role of Bellini’s opera Beatrice di Tenda at Carnegie on December 5. This rarely performed opera is considered one of Bellini’s finest works, full of extraordinary music. On February 27 we are giving the New York premiere of two contemporary works, Philip Glass’s Toltec Symphony and Osvaldo Golijov’s Oceana. This promises to be

one of the most talked-about events in New York and we are pleased to be joined by the sensational singer Biella Da Costa. We close our season at Carnegie with a concert performance of Song of Norway conducted by Tony winner Ted Sperling and a remarkable cast of Broadway stars including Judy Kaye and Jason Danieley.

In addition to our own season, we are appearing as guests with The New York Philharmonic on June 6, 8 and 11 performing Luigi Dallapiccola’s opera Il Prigioniero with Alan Gilbert. After the Mahler 8th Symphony in October, we will join the American Symphony Orchestra for two more concerts in

the spring. Finally we are especially honored to be invited to perform with the Israel Philharmonic on October 25 after our successful collaboration in Israel and at the Salzburg Festival with them.

As you can see, The Collegiate Chorale has quite a remarkable season ahead. We look forward to seeing you this year and, as always, appreciate your support and enthusiasm.

Sincerely, James Bagwell

All of us at The Collegiate Chorale, the singers, the staff and our wonderful board, feel that this season promises to be memorable and full of surprises.

Leon Botstein, conductor

In a fusion of song and symphony, The Collegiate Chorale, Brooklyn Youth Chorus and American Symphony Orchestra join forces in honor of the orchestra’s 50th Anniversary with a performance of Mahler’s massive Symphony of a Thousand. One of the largest-scale choral works in the repertoire, Mahler’s 8th is structured in two parts, Veni creator spiritus (“Come, Creator Spirit”) and an excerpt from the closing scene of Goethe’s Faust, to form an optimistic message of redemption through the power of love.

First performed in America in 1916 under the baton of ASO founder Leopold Stokowski, this performance of the Mahler 8 will be accompanied by Charles Ives’s Symphony No. 4 and Stokowski’s arrangement of John Stafford Smith’s The Star-Spangled Banner.

This program is produced by the American Symphony Orchestra, and tickets for this concert are not included in The Collegiate Chorale’s 2012-2013 season subscription. To purchase tickets, please visit americansymphony.org/concert/50th-birthday-celebration

Considered one of Vincenzo Bellini’s finest works, Beatrice di Tenda is characterized by ravishing melodies and exciting finales. Set in 15th century Milan and based on a historical figure, the opera tells of the tormented but saintly wife of the Duke of Milan, falsely accused of

adultery by the scorned lover of one of her admirers and sentenced to death by her husband. Premiered in 1833 and famously revived in 1961 by Joan Sutherland and Marilyn Horne, The Chorale’s much- anticipated performance will feature the extraordinary Angela Meade in the title role and rising star Jamie Barton as Agnes.

James Bagwell, conductor

In this pairing of contemporary choral works by Osvaldo Golijov and Philip Glass, The Chorale turns its attention towards Latin America with the New York premieres of Oceana and Symphony No. 7 “Toltec.” Composed in 1996, Golijov wrote Oceana in the spirit of a Bach cantata, but in a Latin American musical style featuring a jazz vocalist, percussion, and guitars. Set to the poetry of Pablo Neruda, Oceana, in Golijov’s words, is the “transmutation of passion into geometry” and that

“water and longing, light and hope, the immensity of South America’s nature and pain, are here transmuted into pure musical symbols, which nevertheless should be more liquid than the sea and deeper than the yearning that they represent.” Popular Venezuelan jazz vocalist and Golijov specialist Biella Da Costa joins The Chorale for this powerful musical work.

Composed in 2004, the Toltec Symphony is Philip Glass’s personal homage to the ancient traditions and beliefs of the peoples of Mesoamerica, ca. 300-1000 CE. Glass wrote of their personal spiritual development: “The Toltecs emphasized the relationship with the forces of the natural world (sun, earth, water, fire and wind) in developing their own wisdom traditions.” In his symphony, Glass portrays this spirituality with driving rhythms and varying textures in the orchestra and chorus.

Ted Sperling, conductor/director

Romantically portrayed and with glorious music, Song of Norway tells the story of composer Edvard Grieg as he dreams of international fame. That dream quickly fades, however, under the patronage of a famous Italian prima donna, and Grieg realizes that his true creativity lies in his two greatest loves - Nina, his childhood sweetheart and his home in Troldhaugen, Norway. Set in 1860, Robert Wright and George Forrest (of Kismet) cleverly weave Grieg’s compositions together in this heart-warming operetta/musical. Grammy Award winner Ted Sperling conducts and directs, with Broadway greats Judy Kaye and Jason Danieley and the American Symphony Orchestra joining The Chorale for this special evening.

Side-by-Side Education ProgramSide-by-Side is The Collegiate Chorale’s flagship education program. Launched during the 2003–2004 season, it provides an opportunity for musically advanced NYC high school students to rehearse and perform with the chorus under the supervision of their Chorale mentors and “side-by-side” adult singers. This program gives talented students the invaluable experience of performing at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center with professional musicians and world-class soloists. We also provide students with Master Classes and in-school coaching by our Music Director, guest artists and vocal coaches.
