University of Central Arkansas Cheer Team Tryouts

• Tryouts are set for May 9-11, 2013 • Paperwork must be postmarked by APRIL 18, 2013 – Cost: $25 if paperwork is turned in by deadline. $40 after dead-line.

• Location: Prince Center• Schedule:

– Thursday, May 9 – 6pm-9pm– Friday, May 10 – 6pm-9pm

– Saturday, May 11 – 9am-12pm• 1pm - Mandatory New Team Meeting

SKILLS

• STUNTS: 1-4 people (bases) lifting and holding a “flyer” in the air while she demonstrates body control and flexibility by pulling body positions

• PYRAMID: The merging of multiple stunts. Often stacked 3 people high.

• TUMBLING: Using body control and power to flip, spin, bound and perform other tricks in the air

• BASKETS: 2-4 bases launching a flyer anywhere from 15-30 feet in the air as she performs tricks in the air before she is drops back into the group’s arms

Calorie Burn: Cheer Fun Fact

• According to my Nike Fuel Band, Being 195lbs and 6’2. I burned on averaged 225 calories per “full out routine” (2:30)

• For a single 2 hour practice, I burned and average of 1,940 calories.

• Hell week consists of 3 practices a day, 2 hours each practice.

• A pound of fat = 3000 calories.• I burned almost 2lbs of fat every day for a total of

almost 15lbs worth of fat burned in a week.

• Quinton Rampage Jackson (Former UFC Light-Heavy Weight Champion of the world):

• Body Slam = 2000-2100 lbs of force

• Kassim Osgood (NFL Hall of fame; Wide Receiver and Special Teams: Detroit Lions)

• Moving Tackle = 1800-1950 lbs of force

• High school Cheer Team (2 boy bases, 2 girl bases, 105lb flyer)

• Back tuck Basket = 2100 – 2800 lbs of force

• Back-hand-spring (150 lbs participant)– 1100-1300 lbs of force per contact with floor

• Back Tuck (150 lbs participant)– 1900-2100 lbs of force upon landing

**These are only measures of basic skills, generally, the more difficult the skill, the harder the impact, leading to higher risk of injuries.

INJURIES

• According to the NCAA Injury Analysis, in correlation with all other collegiate sports, Cheer contributes to:– 42.5% sprains– 18.4% Soft tissue injury– 15.4% fractures and dislocations– 14.3% of concussions– 40% of fatal injuries

• An average of 45 deaths occur annually from cheerleading
