We may have all come on different ships, but we're in the same boat now. (Martin Luther King, Jr.)

Cooperation in 4-H is standard operating procedure and there are numerous opportunities for us to practice our skills in cooperation. Whether it is at a club meeting, at a project workshop, or in pulling together a county-wide event, we must work with others to make the program a success. Even though it may seem easier to handle something ourselves, the best outcomes come when we accept input from others. Ironically, the best cooperative relationships start with OURSELVES; how we contribute to the team will demonstrate and establish an environment for others to follow. Here are some ways that YOU can contribute to and encourage a Cooperative Learning Environment:

• Listen • Encourage your peers • Allow and invite others to contribute their talents and skills • Follow as well as lead • Recognize your strengths and use them for the common good • Treat others equitably • Recognize the needs of the group • Think before acting; delay your response if needed • Communicate calmly • Put competition aside

Teams work cooperatively to achieve MUTUAL BENEFIT. So while the spirit of cooperation starts with us, we are not the most important member of the team. Everyone benefits when we choose to put the needs of the group before their own personal agenda. Even when the task is seemingly unpleasant (mucking horse stalls) and maybe even painful (the loss of a loved one), sharing the experience helps to develop and strengthen relationships. We have several efforts coming up that will require our 4-H groups to work cooperatively; you can find out more about each of these and many others in this month’s Cloverleaf Crier:

* Anything Goes * Horse Shows * Fair Foodstand * Club Fundraisers * 4-H Camp * Service Projects * Gateway Academy

Your 4-H Youth Development Staff look forward to working cooperatively with you this summer and into the upcoming 4-H years!

GENERAL INFORMATION

4-H FISCAL YEAR…ENDS JUNE 30

The Pension Reform Act of 2006 made significant changes in IRS laws and guidelines. As a result, the GEN number held through 4-H National Headquarters will be eliminated and all states have been directed to secure tax-exempt status for 4-H groups within their state. All 4-H clubs, groups and committees are accountable to Cooperative Extension for their activities and finances; their continued existence is dependent on Cooperative Extension’s authorization and oversight.

The University of Wisconsin Extension, Cooperative Extension operates on a July 1-June 30 fiscal year. Therefore, all 4-H groups must also abide by the fiscal year July 1-June 30. Club and Project Committee Treasurer’s should reconcile their books and complete their audits by August 1st! If you have any questions or need any help, please feel free to call Sarah at 920.459.5903.

We’d love to have you join our crew. There will be a Fair Superintendent and Judging Assistant Training Meeting prior to judging on Monday August 19 at 12:00 pm. And a special CONGRATULATIONS and hats off to Jay Johnson for his directorship of the 2013 WI 4-H Drama Company. Also congrats to Randy Niffenegger, Erin Spieth, Ali and Liz Johnson for being on the State Teams!

The wonderful 4-H Blacksmith Project Leaders (Bill Schlink, Hubert Van de Pas, Dan Sippel, Al Schmid and Larry Menting) for their dedication and hard work with the Annual 4-H Hammer-In. Also a special thanks to the Fair Board for allowing us use of one of their buildings. It was GREAT. The Hammer-In was very educational and productive, resulting in the creation of many outstanding projects.

Dairy Judging Team Coaches Erin Jens, Jeff Bleck, and Chris Booth, and numerous volunteers for giving much of their time and expertise to prepare our youth for Area Animal Science Days! Your dedication and hard work means A LOT. Thank you for all you do!

The delegates learn about what is happening in 4-H at the state level, weigh in on important issues and elect the next year’s Youth and Adult Leaders Council representatives. This year the Fall Forum will be Saturday, November 9, at the Holiday Inn in Stevens Point. The Sheboygan County 4-H Leaders Association will cover the cost of mileage and registration for the one youth and one adult delegate. In return, these delegates are expected to co-teach the 4-H Club Leadership Team training with John and Sarah, which they will have already participated in at the Fall Forum. Youth or adults interested in representing Sheboygan County at the Fall Forum are asked to contact the UW-Extension Office by Monday, August 19th.

LIABILITY INSURANCE Sheboygan County is continuing the volunteer liability insurance for Sheboygan County 4-H Volunteer Leaders. You are automatically covered under this policy if you are registered as a 4-H Leader. The insurance provided by Sheboygan County is intended to protect the volunteer leader from damages. Remember, this insurance is not Accident Insurance. The county also purchases Accident Insurance to cover all enrolled members and certified 4-H volunteer leaders.

As a 4-H leader, it is important to reduce your liability risk as much as possible. Be sure to provide safety instruction in all risk situations - and take all necessary precautions to assure safe activities. If you are planning any activities

that could be considered "out of the ordinary" and might increase risk; contact Sarah, so she can verify liability insurance coverage for the activity.

OURTOWN ORIOLES TO HOST 3RD LEMONADE STAND

TO FIGHT CHILDHOOD CANCER The Ourtown Orioles is proud to support Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) by hosting a lemonade stand at the 2013 Ducktona event on Sunday, July 7 from 11 am – 5 pm in Sheboygan Falls. ALSF raises money and awareness for pediatric cancer causes, primarily research into new treatments and cures. Alexandra “Alex” Scott had neuroblastoma cancer and in 2000, at the age of 4, she announced she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help the other kids with cancer at her hospital. When she died at age 8, over $1 million had been raised. As of today, ALSF has raised over $30 million towards Alex’s dream that a cure for childhood cancer be found. Many of the donations the foundation receives are from children who hold lemonade stands. Additional research and new therapies need to be found so that more children can survive the cancer and the treatment of it – better funded adult research and protocols do not work on children. ALSF awards grants to medical personnel who look for such therapies for children. Please help us find a cure for childhood cancer, one cup at a time. You can donate online

at http://www.alexslemonade.org/mypage/112355 or visit the lemonade stand. For more information or ways you can help, contact Kelly Rauch at 550-2004 or [email protected].

WALK TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE The lovely summer days go by so quickly, and soon it will be August! There are so many great activities being offered at this time of year, so how do you decide what to participate in? If you like to make a difference in your community, be sure to attend the 8th annual There is Hope walk for suicide awareness and prevention. Why is this cause so important? Sheboygan County’s suicide rate is higher than the national or Midwest averages, and suicide is preventable! This year’s There is Hope walk will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at the scenic Sheboygan lakefront setting of Deland Park. Registered walkers participate in a non-competitive 2 mile walk along the shores of Lake Michigan. The general public and registered walkers are welcome to participate in the raffles, silent auction, bake sale, brat fry, craft activities, free chair massages, mental health bingo, music, and more. Walk registration begins at 8 a.m., with the opening ceremony beginning at 9 a.m. There is Hope is Mental Health America’s main fundraiser, and donations received help the organization provide educational programs, referrals, support groups, an emergency medication account, and other services to Sheboygan County residents at no cost. For more information or to register online (check out early bird registration fees!), visit www.mhasheboygan.org or call Mental Health America at 458.3951. We hope to see you there, supporting this important cause!
