The Official Publication of Sheboygan County 4-H

Dear 4-H Families,

Parents play a critical role in deciding the organizations in which their children will participate. The

experience the family has in 4-H during their first year is important for long term participation. Quite

often though, parents are not certain of their own role within 4-H. Below is a list of the Dos and Don’ts of

being a 4-H parent.

DO

DO take time to learn about 4-H, what it stands for and how it operates.

DO advise your son/daughter in selecting 4-H projects. Help them select a project they are

interested in, have the ability to accomplish and is one for which you can help furnish needed

materials, facilities, financing and guidance.

DO encourage your child to participate in county and state events, such as public

presentations, camp, fair, workshops and other activities.

DO keep the purpose of the 4-H project in perspective. Realize that a project is simply a

teaching tool and a method for involving boys and girls in a worthwhile activity.

DO give encouragement when your 4-H’er succeeds and even more when he/she fails.

DO keep in mind that the most important goal of 4-H is personal growth of the individual.

DO volunteer to share your hobbies and talents with 4-H members.

DO be tactful- with 4-H volunteers, educators, judges, and your child.

Do remember that 4-H volunteers and judges are often volunteering their own time for the

benefit of your child; don’t forget to show them your appreciation.

DO ask questions!

DON’T

DON’T do your child’s project for them, even though you may be able to do it faster, better,

simpler and with much less mess.

DON’T discourage a child’s enthusiasm by providing too much corrective influence or criticism.

DON’T re-live your childhood experiences through your child.

DON’T view your child as an extension of yourself. Don’t view his/her success or failure as a

reflection of your ability or worth.

DON’T assume your child is always right (or always wrong.)

GENERAL INFORMATION

SNOW/ICE & 4-H MEETINGS Another winter has arrived and maybe with it the

snow and ice! We don’t want anyone

to be stuck out in the cold, so there

may be times when it is advisable

to cancel county level 4-H

meetings. The Extension Office has

a Meeting Information Line to keep

you updated on any meeting cancellations due to

weather! By calling 459.5908 you will hear a

recorded message in regards to the latest meeting

cancellations or you can check out our website at

http://sheboygan.uwex.edu/. Please note: If classes

are cancelled at UW Sheboygan, 4-H night meetings

will also cancelled.

ATTENTION!! Project Leaders and Committee

Chairs…if you are planning on canceling a meeting,

please call the Extension Office by 3:00 p.m. Our

staff will best be able to support you by sending out

an e-mail to project members, updating the Meeting

Information Line and the website, if called by 3:00

p.m. Thank you!

Our policy is safety first!

SHEBOYGAN COUNTY 4-H ENDOWMENT

FUND GRANT

Do you need money to get a new project started or

to expand a current project? Consider applying for

a Sheboygan County 4-H Endowment Fund Grant.

The 4-H Endowment Fund Committee invites grant

proposals from 4-H clubs, committees,

leaders and members. Possible areas of

support might include new and

creative programs, work with

minorities and under-served youth,

scholarships and urban programs. The committee

looks for programs that are new and innovative; with

outreach to a large audience. So, put on your

thinking caps for a creative way to use some grant

funding! Applications are included in this hefty Crier

and are due February 1st.

2014 4-H CALENDAR

In the February Crier, there will be a list of tentative

4-H meeting dates and times for 2013. Please use it

as a reference. Each month an updated calendar

will be included in the Crier. We encourage you to

double check all of the dates, locations and times in

the monthly calendars printed in the Criers.

2014 4-H SPOTLIGHT CLUBS

Each year, five 4-H clubs have a

special opportunity to showcase

and highlight their club’s activities,

members and leaders at the 4-H

ALL Parent and Leaders Meetings. The

following clubs are on the calendar for 2013:

Feb. 17, 7 pm – Ourtown Orioles

April 21, 7 pm – Spring Valley

July21, 7 pm – Sheboygan County Wranglers

September 15, 7 pm – Older Youth Trips &

Experiences

November 17, 7 pm – Mitchell Monsters

Club presentations should involve both youth and

adults in a brief (5 minute) “snapshot” of their club,

their members and leaders and their most important

activities. If you have any questions, contact Sarah

at 459.5903. Mark your calendars and start planning

now!

4-H NEW FAMILY WELCOME

WELCOME new 4-H families! On behalf of the

Sheboygan County 4-H Program, we would like to

wish you a Happy New Year and welcome you to the

Sheboygan County 4-H Program! We are very

excited that you have decided to join 4-H; we

believe there truly is something for everyone in 4-H.

As you begin to learn more about the program, we

understand that it can be a bit overwhelming at

times, and we would like to help you better

understand all the opportunities available.

So, please join us for an evening of family fun and

learning. We will be holding our “NEW” 4-H Family

Welcome on Thursday, January 23rd from 5:30-7:30

p.m. at the Extension Office. The evening is designed

for all new 4-H club members (Cloverbuds included),

their parents, new leaders and anyone else

interested in more information on 4-H and the

opportunities available. Dinner will be served! There

will be time for questions and answers. To register,

please complete the form at the back of this month’s

Crier or call our 4-H office at 459.5903.

CURRENT 4-H MEMBERSHIP POLICY Printed below is the state policy for 4-H membership. Please refer to it as you participate in 4-H programs and activities throughout the year.

Youth in Kindergarten (5K)-one year following graduation from high school are eligible to enroll in the Wisconsin 4-H Youth Development Program. Kindergarten, first and second graders participate in 4-H as

Cloverbuds. Older youth are able to continue 4-H membership through the next 4-H year following their graduation from high school. The state recognizes Cloverbuds as 4-H members. Developmentally appropriate programs should be designed to meet the unique needs of Cloverbuds.

Home Schooling: Children who are home schooled will participate in 4-H in their declared grade.

Graduation: Counties are encouraged to recognize full graduation for those who wish to cease 4-H membership upon graduation from high school. High school seniors and those participating as members in the year following high school graduation, will be eligible to participate through the entire 4-H year.

District & State Events: Participation in District and State 4-H events and recognition programs will be based upon the 4-H member’s grade.

National Events: Participation in national 4-H events will be based upon the age established for the event.

2014 4-H PROJECT DAY

The date has been set and the 2014 4-H Project Day

has been scheduled for Saturday, March 8 at

Riverview in Plymouth. New ideas, skills, and

techniques will be shared with 4-Hers. Watch for your

opportunity to register. Look for an e-mail with

registration information in early January.

Adult and older youth volunteers are needed to plan

and lead our sessions so a registration form can be

developed. Sessions will be held in 1 1/2-hour blocks

of time. If you have something you can show

participants how to do, please contact our

coordinator, Merry Klemme.

What can you do to help make sure this awesome

day happens?

If you have a craft or project idea that you

think you could share with a class of up to 12 4-

H members within 1 1/2 hours, call or email

Merry as soon as possible.

If you don’t have a solid idea of which of your

MANY ideas you could share, don’t hesitate to

call and brainstorm with Merry as soon as

possible.

If you don’t have any idea of what you can

make or teach, but you’d like to help with the

day anyway, call or email Merry.

If you know another older youth leader or

parent or anyone creative and/or willing to

share their skills, make sure they see this request

for help.

You get the idea… we need volunteers to put this

wonderful opportunity together and we know there

are so many talented and inspirational leaders

among our teens and adults. Please contact Merry

Klemme, 893-9679 or [email protected] to volunteer!

4-H CLUB SECRETARIES

Just a friendly reminder that you should

be sending your monthly minutes to the

Extension Office. Having 33 clubs in the

county, this really is the quickest and best

way for us to know what is going on with

your club. You can e-mail them or drop them off at

the Extension Office. If you e-mail them, please send

them to Linda at: [email protected].

Thanks to those clubs who have been current with

their minutes this fall! Keep up the great work…we

enjoy reading what your clubs are up to!

COMMUNITY SERVICE

EXCITING COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT

The Sheboygan County 4-H and the Sheboygan

County Planning have joined together to develop an

awesome Community Service Project. Aaron Brault,

Director of the Sheboygan County Planning and

Conservation Department, has offered an “adopt a

mile” opportunity for our county 4-H clubs. The areas

of focus are located on the Old Plank Trail Road and

the Interurban Trail.

This is particularly attractive as these are off road trails

and safe for our younger members to service. The

county has also offered to place a sign of

representation for the adopting club at each mile

marker. Our goal is to link our 4-H clubs across

Sheboygan County. To receive a map and submit an

intent of interest please complete the attached

registration form and return to the extension office.

Any questions can be emailed to Kelly Brumirski, 4-H

Rangers, General Leader, [email protected] or

Aaron Brault, Sheboygan County at

[email protected] .

WHAT IS EXPECTED OF

4-H PROJECT LEADERS?

* First, make sure you’re a certified 4-H Leader or

enrolled as a Youth Leader!

* Get started now! Member enthusiasm for a project

is highest at the time of enrollment. Find out who

is enrolled in the project and set up your

meetings.

* At one of the first meetings of the year, help

members set their goals for the project. Be sure

members bring their 4-H member's record sheet

with them to the meetings. All members should

complete the first section by March 1st.

* Help members keep a record of what they did or

made in the project during the year.

* Review progress toward the year's goals at your

final meeting of the year.

* Organize and conduct at least three to six project

meetings per year. Remember project tours and

individual sessions can be offered to members in

addition to group meetings.

* Involve youth leaders in meaningful ways. They are

capable of helping in planning and teaching--

not just being the helper or the clean up crew!

* Set an example in being prepared, organized, and

flexible in working with youth.

With the start of a new 4-H year, we have many new

members and new families joining 4-H; which is

incredibly exciting and is what keeps our program

strong and thriving. In joining our great youth

development organization, we want them to have a

terrific experience! There is, however, so much to do

and so much to learn in 4-H that at times it can be

overwhelming. We don’t want anyone to feel

overwhelmed or unsure, but truly want the very best

for everyone who joins! In order to provide support

and encouragement for new families, we are starting

a New Member/New Family Mentoring Program. If

you are interested in helping make a difference for

our new members and new families, why not

CAT PROJECT 'MEWS’

A big, fluffy welcome to all of the new and returning

cat project members! The first meeting of this

purrfectly wonderful year will be held on Tuesday,

January 21, 2014. It will begin at 6:30pm and be held

at the UW Extension. New handbooks will be given

out, questions answered and a simple make & take

project completed for yourself and as a service

project. Be sure to attend this important first meeting.

Please, no cats at this meeting as updated

vaccination records need to be turned in first.

Different this year, we will be alternating meeting

days between Tuesdays and Thursdays. Since so

many of our members are also in horse quiz bowl,

and the rabbit, goat and dog projects, we felt we

wanted to be sure that meetings were held to give

everyone a chance to meet the minimum project

requirements of 3 meeting attendances. Obviously

we’d like for you to attend all meetings we hold, but

realize this isn’t always possible since so many of our

4-H’ers are REALLY involved!

Now is the time for youth leaders to make themselves

known. The cat board is looking for youth willing to

help lead our project this year. Application forms will

be available in your handbook, although if you want

to get a head start in applying, contact Alice Samse

at 467-1558 and an application will be gotten to you.

Past youth leaders wishing to continue serving on the

board do need to fill out a current application also.

Paws for Praise… A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who

made our 6th annual Multi-County 4-H Cat Show a

success. From Waupaca north to Monroe south and

everywhere in between, kids came to showcase not

only their feline friends but their talents in

photography, art, showmanship and creative

costuming and cages. We are moving this show

from Fall to Summer, so hopefully more of you will

take advantage of this fun show next year.

LLAMA PROJECT NEWS

The Llama & Alpaca Project participated in the

Sheboygan County Historical Museum’s “Holiday

Memories 2013” by decorating a Christmas tree for

display at the museum. The tree highlighted the

project as well as 4H. Project members contributed

ornaments made from llama and alpaca fiber that

they had needle felted into shapes using cookie

cutters. There were also cartoon lama shapes made

out of foam and dough. Ornaments with the 4H logo

were used along with cutouts of the llama from

“Llama Llama Holiday Drama.”

This year, project members will have the opportunity

to learn more about how the llama and alpaca fiber

can be used by learning to spin it into yarn, needle

felt and wet felt. Older members and adult leaders

will lead the group.

There is no meeting in December. The January 21,

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS

2014 4-H INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE

OPPORTUNITIES Looking for an in-depth experience overseas? 4-H

International Programs has the perfect trip for you!

We offer a month-long stay in Japan, Australia,

Finland or Mexico. Our outbound programs are

available to 4-H members, leaders and alumni.

Chaperone positions are also available with several

of our programs.

Or…if you don’t have the time or resources to

travel…how about opening your home to an

international visitor for a brief time during the summer

or for a school year? Hosting is truly a rewarding

experience, with participants becoming a part of

your family, sharing in the day-to-day chores, as well

as everyday events, from meals to time at the

beach.

Our programs provide young people with the

opportunity to learn about and participate first-hand

in another country by living with a host family.

International experiences greatly enhance an

individual’s knowledge, employability and skills. In

addition, this program gives participants the

opportunity to build strong communication skills. Our

programs literally encompass a “World of

Opportunities!”

For applications and additional information, please

contact Linda at 459.5903 or the Wisconsin 4-H

International Programs Office at 608.262.2491.
