Dubuque County Beef Weigh-In Saturday, December 14, 2019—Cascade Sale Barn

7:00am - 9:00am: State Fair Retinal Imaging

9:00am - 11:00am: County Fair Weigh-In

All market heifers and steers that 4-H/FFA

members wish to show at the 2020 Dubuque

County Fair MUST be weighed in on this day.

There is a $3 tag fee for County & $7 tag fee for State

Fair.

All market animals planning to show at the Iowa State

Fair must be weighed in on this day at the Cascade

Sale Barn. Retinal imaging will be done on-site.

There will be retinal imaging/DNA Samples done for

State Fair animals. This is included in the $7.00 fee

for State Fair animals.

If you are unable to make it to our weigh-in, please

contact the Extension Office with any questions

regarding the Delaware & Jackson County

Weigh-In dates. There will be a $5.00 out of

county charge for this.

4-H members identifying market beef need to

make sure they are enrolled in 4hOnline

BEFORE the weigh-in!

All 2020 beef rules will be sent out in a letter mailed to

those enrolled in the beef project by December 1st.

We will once again have the breed steer classes.

Please note that anyone interested in showing in the

breed specific classes will need to have their animal

updated on 4hOnline prior to February 1st with

registration papers turned in by July 1st to be able to

show in these classes.

NEW: 4-H Performance Beef Class Rules

All animals must be weighed-in at the December weigh-in at the same time as all market beef for the fair.

Animals do not need to be designated as ‘Performance Beef’ until the day of the show at the Cascade Sale

Barn. There will be no other class breaks – all cattle will be evaluated together. At the December weigh-in,

we would like to know if exhibitors plan on participating in the Performance Beef class to get an idea on

number of head.

Open to beef steers only – no dairy steers or market heifers. Animals do not need to be halter broke.

It is recommended but not required cattle have a starting weight in December of 550 pounds and a max near

800 pounds. Cattle need to have a 600-1050# carcass at the time of harvest at the packer, or may be subject

to a price dock.

Each member can exhibit up to 3 animals.

This will be a terminal show – cattle will be harvested with individual cut out data obtained. Cattle will be

placed live, but final carcass value added per day on feed will determine overall placing.

Judging will take place at the Cascade Sale Barn during the last week of June, approximately 4-5 weeks

prior to the Dubuque County Fair.

Results will be announced during the Beef show at the Dubuque County Fair, with

winners being recognized. The Dubuque County Extension Office will cut checks to the

exhibitor for the value of their cattle.
