GET INVOLVED!

Let’s get back to basics. Chelmsford Star isa ‘co-op society’ which means it is abusiness owned by its members - so if youhave a membership card you are one of ourbosses! We want to make sure we operatein a way which makes our bosses (you)happy, so we arrange meetings to tell youhow we are doing. Twice a year, all ourmembers are welcome at our annual (AGM)and half-yearly (interim) meetings to hearreports from management, learn futureplans and voice their own opinions.

Some members want to have moreinvolvement, and a more direct influence inhow we run things. These individuals putthemselves forward to represent othermembers by standing for election.

Those who are successful then join one ofthe following panels, and we thank them byproviding them a discount in all our stores:

Members’ CouncilThis group of members meet 4 times ayear. They’re given an overview of ouractivities and finances, and provide us withinsight into our customers’ opinions oncertain matters. It also provides a usefulentry point for those wanting to gainpractical experience behind the scenes, witha view to eventually becoming a Director.

Membership CommitteeMeeting 8 times a year, this groupfocuses on all aspects of membershipand community engagement. Ongoingtraining and development is providedwhere needed.

There’s been a lot of talk of members’meetings, ‘Interims’ and ‘having your say’ in this issue, but what is it all about?

Board Of DirectorsOur Board meet every 4 weeks todetermine our policies and strategies, and to evaluate performance. TheDirectors must also populate a numberof sub-committees – groups specificallyfocussed on reviewing areas such aspension funds or membership.

We’re always looking for newperspectives, so if you want to offeryours – or find out more – contactour secretary Ellen on 01245 216916or [email protected]

“Did you know, if you are aCo-op member like me,you can have a say in whathappens in your CO-OP?Perhaps like you, I shopped inthe Quadrant not knowingthat I could have a say in the

business. I joined the Members’ Council in May andwe meet just 4 times a year in the evening, so thereis nothing stopping you from having your say.It IS your CO-OP!”

Community Forums- Are you active in your community?- Are you involved in local projects?- Do you want to improve your neighbourhood?

If the answer to any of these is yes, andyou feel Chelmsford Star Co-op maybe able to help with expertiseor support, get in touch. We’re looking to hold a series ofCommunity Forums around ourtrading area to better understandhow we can improve our communities for our members.

Carole Beeston joined the Members’Council this year…

Page 12: The Cleaning Up Essex Edition - Chelmsford Star · membership card! Congratulations to the members most recently selected as our Members of the Month. Jessica Fisher (Writtle) and

Not many people realise that co-opswere originally created by youngerpeople. They had been revoltingagainst big businesses, believing thatshops should use their profits tosupport their communities rather thanthe bank accounts of old businessmen. They fought to create a newway of doing things, and that becamethe blueprint for all co-ops ever since.

Staying true to these roots, we wantto support the young people of Essexwho use our stores – the full-timestudents who may be strugglingfinancially as they learn to be theleaders and entrepreneurs oftomorrow. To that end, we are triallinga new form of membership with themin mind. It is currently only available tothose studying in Writtle, but we hopeto expand the pilot-scheme soon.

For the usual £1 share payment, student members will get:• 10% reward back when using our food stores• 1% reward back when using Quadrant and Travel

In addition, they’ll receive the usualvoting rights and the opportunity tohave a say in how we’re run. StudentMembership lasts a year, and thenmust be re-applied for with proof ofstudent ID. Find out more onwww.chelmsfordstar.coop/student
