Important information from school

Foreword

The purpose of this handout is to give parents an overview of the learning and teaching which will take

place during this academic term. The handout not only highlights important academic changes for the

year 2019-20 but also provides useful information that will help parents/guardians support their child and

be a partner to his/her learning experience in school and at home.

Curriculum

This year TCS Curriculum has been adapted /aligned with UK National Curriculum in terms of its

learning objectives in the three core subjects i.e. English, Science and Mathematics. These Learning

Objectives allow for the continuous development of knowledge and understanding to provide better

opportunities for learners to improve their powers of autonomous learning.

Assessment and Examinations

There are two significant components of assessment in The City School: i.e. Class Learning (coursework)

and Examinations. Class Learning is assessed throughout the term and is a combination of class activities

(classwork), written tests, and project work. Examinations are conducted twice during one academic year:

Mid-Year Examinations and End of Year Examinations.

From this year onwards, Class Learning percentages will continue to be shown separately on the report

card, but will no longer be added/averaged in the exam percentages. This means that the students’ final

result/promotion will be based on the average of the mid-year and end of year exam results only.

Consequent this year onwards class 3 will also take the mid-year as well as the end of year exams in core

subjects.

This step has been taken to ensure validity and reliability of all our assessments, to enhance academic

standards and learning outcomes. Through this initiative we will be better preparing our students whilst

laying the foundation to attain higher results in the CAIE exams.

Homework in Class 3-8

Homework is a set of activities that are designed to be completed independently and is the reinforcement

of work done in the class. It is the opportunity for students to work independently, to research and to

extend their learning.

A homework timetable is prepared and displayed in classrooms in which no more than three

subjects are allocated each day (except Fridays for weekend homework).

The success of homework is related to the quality rather than the quantity set.

The emphasis is on the purpose and outcome of set homework tasks and the effort put in by the

students, rather than the time allocation.

Suggested home learning timetable:

Classes 3-5 Monday - Thursday No more than 30 minutes per day

Classes 6-8 Monday - Thursday No more than 60 minutes per day

Note: Research can be given as weekend home learning activities
