Salem Interfaith Hospitality Network Hosting June 8-15, 2014

FCC will be hosting SIHN. Not the “SIN” you think of, but Salem Interfaith Hospitality Network. We will be hosting homeless fami-lies June 8-15. You have the opportunity to share your time and God’s love with these families in a variety of ways.

Opportunities include Meal Hosts, Evening Hosts, and Overnight Hosts. Mark Ridings also greatly appreciates help setting up for the

families and taking down on Sunday morning. If you are unable to host but would like to help, we are also collecting donations for the food that will be provided for breakfast and at the Day Center for the week.

Detailed descriptions for the host tasks are available, as well as information on SIHN. For more information or descriptions, please contact Michelle Gorman at the church office.

Sign-ups are available at the Information Center or online at our church website- www.salemfcc.org.

Bites of Bread from Bob Sometimes the blessing keeps spreading.

In honor of Allison Pfaff’s retirement as our Business Administrator, our congregation gave $8928 to be used for the development of wells in Africa. By working with Johnny Wray of Week of Compassion, we have found they are able to offer $5000 in match-ing money to the $5000 donated by our congregation for wells being drilled in Zimbabwe through a minis-try called “Showers of Blessings.”

“Showers of Blessings” digs well for commu-nities that do not have a safe or accessible source of water. The wells often become gathering places for the community and they then will build a church on that site. That al-lows the well to also become a source of the “living water” (John 4).

The remaining $3928 is being sent to the Global Ministries arm of our church for a “Congo Initiative” for developing wells. Craig Johnson shared during worship Sunday that in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, there are more Disciples of Christ than in the US. But one of their barriers to improving community health and development in the Congo is the scarcity of accessible clean water. Many

Congolese make their living by hunting, farming, or fishing. Almost none of the population has access to drinkable water. This project will aid in not only the digging of new wells but with assisting in the capping of natural springs that already exist.

In August, 2012, two wells were completed in the Mbandaka area. Where at one time people waited in a line that would stretch over 1/8 mile, the time it takes to get water since the completion of those wells has

been cut down im-mensely. The Wa-ter Projects hopes to continue the growth of available potable water in the Congo.

Already, an influx of displaced fami-

lies is inhabiting previously unsettled areas as a result of the presence of clean water. Global Ministries con-tinues to work to see the flourishing of many more communities.

A Warm Welcome (Back) to Zane Ridings We are excited to have Zane working with the staff

this summer as a Ministry Intern. We are expecting this to be a blessing both to Zane and our congregation.

As he is involved in a broad variety of our ministries, do not be surprised to see him show up in a variety of places.

Zane recently graduated from Eureka College and will be moving on to Brite Divinity School (Texas Christian University) this Fall. He was a summer intern with us two years ago and brought a great amount of vitality to the church. You may email Zane at the church via- ZaneR@salemfcc.org.

Children and Youth A Little Light from Laurie What fun we have had honoring moms, babies and teachers this month. We are blessed to have so many caring and dedicated people in our church who are willing to help raise and teach our babies in God’s name. Please know how much each and every one of you is loved and appreciated. Teachers, we know that lunches, cake, plants and other symbols of appre-ciation given out over the years are just tokens and could never truly express the amount of gratitude we have for your service.

In her online article, “How Do You Thank a Sunday School Teacher?” Sharon Chatwell wrote, “What is it you are going to do for people who come to church every single solitary Sunday with a lesson prepared, and sit in a room full of students to lead them through the intricacies of the Bible, teach them, raise them up, pray for them, and ultimately lead many of them to saving faith in Christ? I tell you right now; whatever you are planning to do…it is not enough!” She con-tinues, “The only way these people will ever get the reward they deserve is when they get to heaven and our Lord, Jesus Christ, tells each of them, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the Kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world’ Matthew 25:34.”

After a particularly emotional Sunday, when every-thing seemed to go wrong, I was handed this message by a child in Sunday School, “You are spechle becase you have a big hart to every one in the chirch.” That’s all the earthly reward needed. Dear Teachers, we know your gifts are for the Lord and not for earthly rewards, but again, we say ‘Thank You,’ and please know how “spechle” you are.

Hey, speaking of dedication and giving to the Lord…WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! We are looking for children’s teachers for summer Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. There are only two weeks until June and we have many positions available, so give me a call at the church to volunteer.

Ramblings from Riane “Kids care what teachers teach, when kids know that teachers care.” – Kennon Callahan

This quote was included in Pastor Bob’s sermon this week and it really resonated with me. It reminds us why teachers choose to be teachers – because they care about their students and have a passion for mak-ing a difference in the lives of others through educa-tion. Many voluntary teachers in our church do an excellent job teaching us God’s word and showing us how much they care. I still remember the Sunday School teachers that made an impact on my life at such a young age. On behalf of the youth, I thank everyone who has devoted their time to teaching the people of our church.

The youth have concluded their series on learning about Jesus and His life on Earth. At the beginning of the series, each youth wrote a letter to Jesus ex-pressing what they already know, what they would like to know, and how they feel about Him. Throughout the series, we learned about Jesus as God, as human, as healer, as salvager, as confronter, as servant, as shepherd, as provider, as forgiver, as hero, as savior, and as victor. We learned about the importance of His resurrection and how we can grow in our relationship with Him. At the conclusion of our lesson, I handed back those letters and we re-flected on our spiritual growth.

Flying M Ranch/Trask Mountain Overnight Horseback Ride August 22-23

Our congregation has reserved a two-day, one-night trail ride package. Ride up to the summit of Trask Mountain to a secluded log cabin. All meals are included. Dinner consists of BBQ steak and chicken, homemade yeast rolls, baked beans, salad and des-sert. Sit around the campfire and stay the night in a wood-heated bunkhouse.

Includes: 2 Breakfasts, 2 Lunches, 1 Steak/Chicken Dinner and a great horseback adventure.

Cost is $290. To reserve your space, make a $50 deposit with the church office.

Check It Out! In Ambassadors class I was surprised and amazed by the lesson from the book “One Thousand Gifts.” Doris Jackson is presenting a video series lesson from this same book by Ann Voskamp and of course I had to rush out and buy the book for the library.

You won’t want to miss Ann Voskamp’s approach to living a thankful life. She weaves thankfulness and gratitude to God around our lives of loss and pain and hurry through scripture and her life experiences. She writes in a way that makes one thirsty to give thanks to God for everything. Voskamp described how one of the ten lepers came back to thank Jesus and he was the one who was healed.

It reminded me of the same lesson in Bob’s sermon some weeks ago and the lesson drove home harder. "One Thousand Gifts" is on the New Book Shelf. Do Check it Out!!
