Bites of Bread from Bob I have heard people express the thought “If only we could get back to the church the way it was in New Testament times.” What those people may fail to realize is that much of what we have as the New Testament was written to address problems that were occuring in those New Testament time churches. Our New Testament begins with the 4 Gospels that tell us the story of the life of Jesus. The next book, The Acts of the Apostles, tells of the beginnings of the church and then most of what follows are letters that were written to the churches in order to give them direction when controversy, heresy and division came along. In other words, if it weren’t for problems in the New Testament Church, our New Testament would be much shorter. The book we will be studying for our Fall Bible Study, 1 Corinthians, is a prime example. The church at Corinth was filled with problems. The Apostle Paul had been able to spend about 18 months establishing the church before he moved on to a new city. While he established a strong, passionate con-gregation, they also had their share of problems. The city of Corinth was about twice the size of Salem and considered one of the most cosmopolitan, diverse cities of its times. Paul had his hands full trying to bring these people together in unity. Paul’s often-used phrase was “in Christ.” In Christ, this diverse and divisive congregation was held together by “faith, hope and love.”

Beginning September 8, each of our Sunday School Classes, as well as our worship services, will focus on the teaching found in 1 Corinthians. It is a great time to join one of our Sunday School classes. At 9:45 am we have these adult classes: Ambassadors - Rm. 306, Discovery - Rm. 202, Keystone/Friendship - Rm. 305, Parables - Rm. 311, Sunshine - Rm. 302. At 11:00 am we have the Cornerstone Class - Rm. 302.

To enhance your learning experience, we encourage you to read along in the book. Below are the scrip-

tures that will be examined during Fall Bible Study. Because we have only 10 Sundays, we will not be able to cover all of the scriptures,

but we invite you to read the entire book on your own.

God Bless, Pastor Bob

Giving Reminder In the fall of 2012 we asked for your financial com-mitments for 2013. The family unit record of the estimated gifts are not kept in the church office. Only you know how much you stated you were prayerfully giving to the church. Recently the giving statements, as of June 2013, were mailed to members and friends of the congregation. Comparing June 2013 to June 2012 we are $9,155 LESS in receipts. Year-to-date we are $8,565 more in gifts, yet we are using our re-serves to cover the expenses by $32,000. Are you current with your commitment?

Children and YouthChildren and YouthChildren and YouthChildren and Youth A Little Light from Laurie Vacation Bible School and Junior Youth Camp were two of the big events for our kids this summer. We learned wonderful lessons that the kids will hopefully carry out and spread to the world around them. One common challenge between both events was the idea of God sightings: where do you see God? Whom do you see God in? I found God throughout the summer: in the volunteers who helped with the children's pro-grams; in the little boy who decided to follow Jesus; in the generosity of our congregation who helped bring Vacation Bible School and camp to our kids. I saw God in the camp staff who made us feel wel-come. I saw God in the camp counselors from around the region who shared His love with His chil-dren. I saw God in the quiet of the woods as the chil-dren walked a labyrinth in prayer. And I saw God as a shy child found her voice. Where do you find God? Have you talked to your kids about it? As the seasons change and busy routines begin, I challenge you to look for God with your children.

It seems only yesterday we were diving into summer and now we are bumping into September. As the summer days begin to melt into crisper fall ones, I am actually looking forward to the many blessings Sep-tember brings: cooler weather, vibrant colors, fami-lies returning from vacations and new routines. We have Kim Otis, Kim Resch, Betty Charnholm and Nancy Stebbins as fall teachers who will be helping to bring the lessons of 1 Corinthians to our chil-dren. Christine Sinibaldi will be singing with the grade school children and preparing for the Christmas program. We look forward to seeing all the new and returning smiley faces! September has many events we are looking forward to, such as the all-church picnic, the start of JYF and Service Sunday.

Anticipating a wonderful fall with your children!

Blessings, Laurie

Ramblings from Riane Each week the youth in Sunday School brainstorm individually some challenges for them based on the lesson and subject matter covered that day. They also choose a Bible verse using the concordance that will help them with their challenge for the week. If they return the following Sunday having made pro-gress and memorized their Bible verse, they receive a special treat.

This past Sunday, we learned about Dancing David and how he showed his excitement by dancing for the good things God was doing. His crazy dancing in public was considered out of the ordinary. However, David did not feel uncomfortable stepping out of his box because he knew God loved him no matter what. Together we discussed how stepping out of our com-fort zones, like David did, can help us grow individu-ally and with God.

We have some youth events coming up. This Satur-day, August 24, is the Max Meek Hike. I will be par-ticipating in the hike along with some of the youth. On Thursday, August 29, at 6:30 pm, we will meet at lower Bush’s Pasture Park to play some group games. Friends and family are more than welcome! We have also invited the Silverton First Christian youth to join us. River Rally is our next regional event and it is coming up September 27-29. This is a high school event held at the Eugene First Christian Church. The cost is $100, which covers the river trip, t-shirt, food and lodging for the weekend. For those who do not wish to raft down the McKenzie River, there is also hiking and hot springs. The cost for hikers is less. Please let me know if any high school age youth are interested in attending this regional event.

Have a blessed week!

Riane Towery Interim Youth Director

Things to Know and DoThings to Know and DoThings to Know and DoThings to Know and Do

Check It Out! A new book on your church library shelves, “All Things New,” by Lynn Austin, is a gripping story woven around the lives of a former slave-owning family and their freed slaves in the days immediately following the Civil War. This book was read and recommended by our FCC Book Club. August 23 is a timely day to check out this book in recognition of the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. Find “All Things New” on the back counter of the library along with other novels and true stories focused on the slave trade and its abolition. Do Check Them Out!!

Clothing Swap Saturday, September 7 1:00 pm, Fellowship Hall

You just need to bring a non-perishable food item to attend and get some free clothes for yourself, your kids or even your grandkids. If you do not want to attend you can still participate by bringing your un-wanted clothing of any size, shoes, accessories, or costumes and drop them off in the accordion room (off the Fellowship Hall) before the 7th. This is a great way for people to interact and give clothes a second chance to shine.

Contact Jessica Snyder, 503-584-1892, with any questions.
