Building Stronger Families
Sycamore has a growing number of young families who are raising their children with the prayer that they will be faithful to the Lord and produc-tive in society. What a daunting task! We must all work together. There are no perfect parents. There are no perfect parenting methods. But, there are some God-given fundamental principles that will enhance our parental skills. Scripture records in Ephesians 6:1-3, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ’Honor your father and mother’, which is the first commandment with promise: ’that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.’ And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.” Chil-dren, it is one thing to “obey” your parents, and another thing to “honor” them. Parents, it is one thing to “train” your children, and another thing to “provoke” them. Parents who lose the respect of their children, will even-tually lose their children. Children who feel provoked to “come to church”, will eventually not come at all. Yes, you can be too strict, and, yes, you can be too lenient. But, children must be loved. If asked, most children will tell you that their Mom and Dad loves them. But, when asked if they feel loved, many will say “no”. Children must know and feel loved by their parents. This is the foundation for the home, but can be a difficult one to build. We will be offering a parenting class on Wednesdays in the fall quarter for all those parents who are interested. So whether you have a toddler, teen-ager, or even planning on having children in the near future, we would love to have a room full of eager parents. One of the books we will look at is Gary Smalley’s book, The Key to a Child’s Heart, which gives insights on a child’s self-esteem and how to properly love and discipline your children. It will be a discussion-oriented class, in which we can learn from each other. If you are interested in taking this class, please sign the list in the vestibule.
Family Day Upcoming! Family Day is Sunday, August 30! It will be an incredible day of worship and fellowship for the whole family! We are so blessed to have Kirk Brothers from Freed Hardeman University coming to speak for us. There will be a catered meal at TTU afterwards, along with some fun and competitive fam-ily games. Our theme for the year is Sharing Our Story. Kirk’s message will be Sharing Our Story with All People. He will also be teaching a combined adult Bible class. Kirk has a lot of passion for God and a great knowledge of the Scriptures. We are really looking forward to Kirk being with us! Please not only invite your family and friends to Family Day, but make a diligent effort to bring someone with you! Get busy calling all that you know! It will be a wonderful day as we worship God and celebrate the family!
Men’s Retreat Men, go ahead and mark your calendars for this special weekend on Febru-ary 5-7. We will be heading to Cedars of Lebanon State Park in Lebanon, TN. David Shannon will be our guest speaker. The cost is $30. We will chal-lenge our men to become more passionate men of God, and more moti-
vated leaders in the church and in the home! Don’t dare miss it! Kevin
