JESUS AND THE SAMARITAN WOMAN When Jesus was making His way to Samaria He came to a city of Samaria called Sychar, located about a mile from the ancient city of Shechem. John identifies Sychar as “near the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph” (Jn. 4:5; cf. Gn. 33:18-19; 48:22). It was on this land that Joseph was buried (Josh. 24:32). “Sychar” means “the town of the sepulcher” and may be so named because of Joseph’s tomb (Woods 77). Jesus, being weary from His journey, stopped in this land at Jacob’s well. Jacob’s well is as authentic as anything can be. Tradition has always associated the well with Jacob, and there is no reason to doubt the truthfulness of this tradition (Hendriksen 156). It is fre-quently pointed out that two different words are used for “well” in John 4. Verses 6 and 14 refer to a spring while verses 11 and 12 refer to a dug-out well. Morris notes that some think the former is used be-cause there is a link with the “well of water springing up to eternal life” (4:14). It was about the sixth hour that Jesus came to Jacob’s well being weary from His journey. If Jewish time is being followed this would have been noon; 6:00 p.m. if Roman time. At any rate, Jesus was weary. “Weary” conveys the idea of labor, growing weary from work. Jesus was tired to the point of giving out. It was no easy task climbing rugged territory and traveling dusty roads. More than any other gospel writer John stresses both the deity and humanity of Jesus. Only John tells us the expression “I thirst” in the account of the Lord’s crucifixion. Jesus, though deity, was fully human. At Jacob’s well Jesus met a woman of Samaria. It may be that Jesus intends a contrast between this woman and Nicodemus of chap-ter 3. It is really a good idea to study chapters 3 and 4 of John to-gether. One must remember that the Bible originally did not have the modern chapter divisions. Chapter divisions as we know them were not made until the 13th century by Stephen Langton. Tenney, in his John: The Gospel of Belief notes that Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman are a study in contrasts: he was a Jew and she was a Samari-tan; he was a man and she was a woman; he was educated and she was uneducated; he was morally upright and she was sinful; he was wealthy and she was poor; he sought out Jesus and she was indiffer-ent; and he was serious and she was flippant (92). Similarly, Carson notes after calling attention to a possible contrast between the two the following: “And both needed Jesus” (216). From a spiritual perspective, it matters not whether one falls into any of the above classifications. At the end of the day the only thing which really makes any difference is that one realizes the need for Jesus. Frequently, we place so much emphasis on the things of this life including our place in the scheme of things and forget the most important thing; namely, our need for Jesus. God help us to recognize that all of us have this need.

Healing Heart’s Widows’ Ministry

Bible Classes We began studying the book of Acts last Sunday.

Last Wednesday we did an introduction to the Spiri-

tual Presentations Class. Every student will be taught

how to study & prepare lessons & then encouraged to

give lessons to their class. Parents, urge your child to

participate is this wonderful learning experience!

Parents Ministry Team Meeting Our next meeting is Sunday, Sept. 11, 5:00pm, in the

youth center. Youth deacons & interns will first meet

at 4:30pm in the youth center.

Student Leadership Team For those High School students who would like to de-

velop leadership skills & help lead our ministry, you are

asked to attend our first meeting on Sept. 25 at

Teens For Christ Devotional We will be traveling to Baxter Church of Christ on

Sept. 18 for an uplifting time of worship & fellowship

with students from all over the Upper Cumberland. Vision Basketball Sign-ups

Vision Basketball is a Christian basketball league

headed up by Sycamore & involving area churches of

Christ. For new players, there is a Skills Test & Sign-

up on Sept. 24 at Jefferson Ave. Church of Christ.

All other players can sign-up at our church office.

The cost is $40.

GROW Night Our next night to visit is Sept. 26 at 6:30-8:00pm.

Family Camping Trip The date on the Y.H. calendar was wrong. The correct

date is Sept. 23-25. It is at Dale Hollow Campground

in Celina, TN. You must make your own reservations

online. The number is on the bulletin board in the ves-

tibule. To get a spot you must call ASAP. Kevin

ADOPT-A-STUDENT - It is time for us to start collect-

ing names for Sycamore adults who would like to partici-

pate in the college adoption for this school year. All you

need to do is let Marc Robinson or Robin Meadows know

if you would like to be involved and we will connect you

with 2-4 college students (depending on how many you

would like). This an opportunity to help get better con-

nected with some of our students as well as giving them a

family away from home that will check on them from

time to time. All we simply ask is that you meet with

your students a couple of times a semester to see how

things are going and encourage them. You can take them

out to eat, have them in your home for a meal or what-

ever else you would like to do to get to know them better.

We will have a kick-off party Oct. 5, after class to intro-

duce the “parent” to the students!

Service Project - We will be helping the Sycamore

Elem. School on Fri., Sept. 23, from 8 am until 2 pm with

Kid’s Fun Day. We will have a sign-up list of what time

you can come so check your class schedule and see when

you can help!

Small Groups - We will be starting our small group Bi-

ble Studies on the week of Sept. 16. We will be discuss-

ing the idea of “believing in God, but living as if He

doesn’t exist.” We plan to have 3 guy groups and 2 girl

groups. Make sure to sign up if you want to be involved

in this great time of Bible Study and relationship building

with fellow students.
