President’s Report 21-06-2016 I would like to take this moment to thank the Rotary Club of Wandin for making a donation towards the Big Red Kidney Bus Project. Their donation of $2,000.00 is gratefully received.

The Annual Report is being put together by our wonderful Jean Stuart. If you have anything you would like to have incorporated in the Report, please forward your submission to Jean.

Board members, Jean eagerly awaits your reports. Please send them to her if you have not already done so.

Hwan and Julia presented themselves well last Tuesday. The last twelve months has certainly been an adventure for them and it is obvious by their demeanour that they have grown and matured during their stay with us. It was a bit sad that Hwan forgot to mention his ballistic ride in the Cobra. Never seen anyone texting to his friends while getting massive “g” Forces in the car.

Bright Chinganya gave us an update on ‘The Carers of Africa’. It was lovely to see the happy faces of the children when they received their Wheel Chairs and for the first time were able to move around freely.

On Tuesday Mark and Sharon Sidandi will give us an update on the AKCO (Australian Kenya Community Organisation) school. This has been a very worthwhile project and is that far from completion.

I hope everyone has made their plans for the 28th of June Annual Changeover Dinner. We have been able to organise the dinner to be held at Bram Leigh Reception Centre. This is an exciting venue and the evening should be memorable for all concerned. Further information is inside the Chronicle. We could fill up the venue. Please contact John Hexter on: [email protected] as soon as possible and book your seat or even a table.

See you Tuesday Cheers, Richard

Chairman’s Report Hwan and Julia’s farewell presentations:

Last Tuesday, we were addressed by our exchange students Hwan You and Julia Heringer. Both students spoke in glowing terms of the experience that they have had whilst hosted by the club.

Hwan illustrated his year in Australia with a short PowerPoint presentation. He told us that there were some things that he had expected to find in Australia when he arrived such as large kangaroos in the suburbs, Koalas on every street corner and endless sunshine. He told us that he was surprised to find that it rained so much and that there were so many authentic Korean restaurants.

Of the many things that he got to see and do, some highlights were the Reef to Rock safari and the bike ride to conference. Hwan said that he has made many good friends at school, played in a soccer team, took part in the year 12 camp and did well in the school athletics competition. He particularly enjoyed the cooking course that was part of his school curriculum.

When he returns to South Korea on the 26th June, he will start school holidays for the summer after which he has 6 months schooling left before beginning his tertiary studies. Hwan hopes to pursue a career in hotel management.

Julia also used a PowerPoint presentation to talk about her year in Australia. She listed the Rock to Reef safari and bike ride to conference amongst the many highlights of the past year. Julia included the Rotary four-wheel driving expedition to the Dargo High Plains as one of the special memories that she will take home. Julia enjoyed the wild countryside that she visited together with the wild animals she saw in our zoos and sanctuaries.

Over the Christmas break she travelled to Sydney to visit her cousin and has travelled on Puffing Billy, enjoyed the Australian open tennis, surfing and the footy. Julia has also made many friends at school and through Rotary.

Hwan and Julia thanked their counsellors, their host families and the Rotary Club of Croydon for providing the life changing opportunities of living like Aussies for 12 months. President Richard presented them with certificates of their participation in Youth Exchange and the club gave them each an Akubra hat.
