Club Program for July 2014. Tuesday July 15, 2014  

Guest Speaker for this meeting will be Jesse Johnson. Jesse has recently made his first trip to China with a group of students from Mooroolbark HS. He will speak to us about his experience of “Home Stay” with a family in a foreign country where you do not speak the language and how the students coped with the experience of being away from home for the first time.

This is an opportunity to visit a state of the art spa manufacturer and see the manufacturing process from start to finish. Details to be discussed at the Forum Meeting July 1, 2014 A social evening for our partners is being planned, details to follow. Tuesday July 29, 2014     Craft Night. 

You are invited to join with the ladies from the Rotary Club of Croydon in a fun Craft Night. Catherine from Mindful Recreations will teach us how to create two simple yet beautiful Christmas Decorations. Your kit will enable you to create 6 decorations, perfect to hang from your Christmas tree.  Details in the brochure. 

Tuesday August 5, 2014   Partners Night 

On Monday August 4 and Tuesday August 5 we will be holding the finals of the Primary School Public Speaking Competition in the Theatre at Melba College, Senior Campus on Maroondah Highway. This will not be a dinner meeting, however at the end of the competition supper will be served.  

These competitions have proved to be very popular with the students, staff and parents. This is a great opportunity for the Rotary community to see some our future leaders in action and to interact with their parents and friends.

President’s Report  

This week, we welcomed Ian Cumming into our club. Ian came across from 

Chirnside Park and brings with him a wealth of experience, especially in 

New Generations, one of the five avenues of service within Rotary. David, 

as his mentor, will acquaint Ian with our club’s programs and procedures. 

  

Anthony Poloso, the venue operations manager at the Dorset Gardens, 

was our guest speaker. The Dorset Gardens is our first partner in the 

Friends of Croydon alliance to help alleviate loneliness in our community. 

We will give all partners in the alliance the opportunity to speak at one of  

our meetings.  

 

There are two things that stood out for me in Anthony’s talk: he understood what we are trying to achieve 

in our project to eradicate loneliness and secondly, the way he expressed his vision to make the Dorset 

Gardens more like the traditional village pub, where people get together and feel that they belong to the 

community. We are lucky that the Dorset Gardens is a family‐owned business with the flexibility and 

openness that the huge conglomerations of hotels have lost in my opinion. 

 

The junior footy season is coming to an end and thereby our involvement in running the canteen at the 

Croydon junior football club on Sundays. It’s something that just came up as a suggestion by John 

Anderson; Brian McDaid enthusiastically took up its organisation and displays every week with many 

helpers how Rotary can service the community, whilst enjoying working together. Thank you! 

 

Margaret Ryan was the winner of a gift card, as she observed most differences in how the partner’s 

meeting on 1 July compared with past partner’s meetings. Many of the 16 changes were small like the 

absence of a lectern and a head table; the different room inspired the “round” table setting that made it 

easier for everyone to introduce himself or herself.  For me personally, I realised that I, as president, am 

really the host of the evening and should therefore welcome all guests and ensure, with Ross and Jean, that 

we have good and interesting meetings that stimulate participation and fellowship. Looking forward to 

meeting  many of you on Tuesday.

Vocational Visit Tuesday July 29, 2014 As discussed at the Club Forum last Tuesday we are planning a Vocational Visit to Lanark, a Spa 

manufacturer, in Hallam. Details to be advised on Tuesday evening July 8.  

Whilst we are at Hallam our partners will have the opportunity to have a social evening and learn the art of 

paper decorations, perfect for "Christmas in July". They are quick and easy to make. You will be guided step 

by step by an expert. Arrangements are being finalised and details will be available during this week.

NEW MEMBERS ‐ WELCOME 

 

Stephen Bode 

 

Stephen joined the Rotary Club of Chirnside Park (closed 30 June 2014) 

in April 1999 and was inducted by PDG Ian Riseborough. 

His joining was as a result of his daughter, Carly, being sponsored by the  

Rotary Club of Chirnside Park as an Exchange student to Japan in that 

same year In 2001/2002 Stephen was President of the Club. 

In July 2002 Stephen joined the District Youth Exchange Committee  

and was a member for 5 yrs. 

In 2003 Stephen’s youngest son, Matthew, was sponsored by the  

Rotary Club of Boronia as an Exchange student, also to Japan. 

Stephen was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow by his Club in July 2004 

Also in July 2004 Stephen became District Chairman of the Youth Exchange 

Committee.  He held this position for 3 yrs. 

He was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow sapphire by PDG Bob Richards in July 2007. 

In 2009 Stephen joined the Australian Rotary Health District Committee and was a member for 5 years. 

Whilst at Chirnside Park Stephen was chairman of the Chirnside Park Art Show Committee for 3 years 

and was for 5 years the Club representative, including Chairman of the Farmers Market Committee. 

Stephen has lived in Croydon since 1977 and has been married to Ruth since 1975. 

Ruth was an Honorary member of Chirnside Park since 2009 and was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow in July 

2012 for her work with the Club.  Ruth has been counselor to 3 exchange students and has assisted with 

numerous fund raising and conference events 

They have been host parents for 8 Inbound Students and together were leaders on the Youth Exchange 

Safaris in 2003 and 2004 

Stephen has worked in the field of Human Resources since 1973 at Repco in Richmond , Philips in Clayton 

and Siemens in Bayswater and Richmond. 

Stephen retired in August last year and has been enjoying the extra time for travelling, photography cycling 

and gardening. 

 

 

 

 

  

 

 

 

Ian Cumming 

 

 

Ian Cumming was born and raised in Mont Albert. 

 

He studied Business Studies at Swinburne College majoring in Electronic Data Processing. 

 

He started work in Computing in 1970 at Australian Consolidated Industries. 

 

In May 1974 Ian headed overseas initially touring Britain and Europe. Whilst overseas he worked twice 

with IBM. He travelled more of Europe, Canada, the USA then took 5 and a half months travelling 

overland back to Australia. 

 

He returned to working in computers in Melbourne. Then he headed to Brisbane for 7 years before 

returning to Melbourne. 

 

Nearly 20 years ago he moved to Mooroolbark. 

 

His neighbour a charter member of Chirnside Park 

Rotary Club took him to join the Club.  

Ian is the longest serving non‐charter member of 

Chirnside Park achieving 19 years membership last  

April. 

 

Ian was a Centennial President 2004‐2005. He 

was awarded a PHF in 2006 and a sapphire at  

Chirnside's final meeting. 

With Chirnside's demise he elected to transfer to 

 a strong and vibrant to RC Croydon which is the 

nearest Club to his home. 

 

Ian is now retired and is still maintaining his passion  

for the Beatles and the Hawthorn Football Club.

FRIENDS OF CROYDON. Yesterday the Friends of Croydon Facebook page was launched.   

The Friends of Croydon are a group of individuals, organisations and businesses that have come 

together in an alliance to help eradicate loneliness in Croydon and District. The Friends of Croydon 

will be officially launched in early August.

Whilst being a little premature, the page has now got over 100 likes in under 24 hours and growing.  It took 

nearly two years for RC Croydon Facebook page to get 250 likes.  Comments have already come back from 

overseas. This venture will be one of epic proportions in only a short time.  Can’t wait till the launch.  

 

 

  

 

 

CHAIR REPORT  

Ian Cumming was inducted into the club and he was extremely well received by the members. We 

welcome him and encourage him to participate in the vast array of projects we have.  

I then had the pleasure of introducing  Anthony Poloso who is the Venue Operations Manager 

here at the Dorset Gardens Hotel.  He has been in this role for 11 years and worked with 2 venue 

owners during this time.  Prior to this role, Anthony DJ’d in the Night Club every Saturday night at 

Fortunes over 28’s as well as casual shifts in the Bottle Shop. 

Anthony’s current role of Venue Manager entails the overseeing of 8 departments, a Management 

team of 7 and an employee base of 80 casual staff.   

Through his role Anthony has gained a wealth of knowledge 

about the Hotel Clientele, the local community and has  

developed many close working relationships with local  

sporting associations and other community based groups. 

 

Anthony then informed us of the wish of the Hotel to join the  

alliance of the Friends of Croydon and pledged considerable 

help in the creation of the alliance.  More as we get onto  

launch day.

1. Australian Rotary Health annual financial support. This year Rotary Ride for Research involvement $4,500 total fundraising contribution.

International Projects 1.  Financial support for worldwide end Polio campaign. 2. Continuing major financial support for 3rd world countries projects using private financial 

foundations and club funds. This year: a. Joint project Timor‐Leste Dili $144,000 building for females at risk with involvement from Box 

Hill Tafe.  b. Completion Solomon Islands joint project with Traralgon RC for health outcomes.  

 c. Building on a school in Kenya for AKCO started.  d. Planning for a school in Soibada Timor‐Leste joint project with Pittwater Sydney group. e. Major joint project West Sumba Indonesia – water and sanitation $148,000 – now received 

global grant.  f. Disaster aid to Philippines.
