14THE CHILDREN’S THEATRE OF CINCINNATI 2015–2016 SEASON

TO YOU, A CURRENT PATRON OF OUR MAINSTAGE SERIES, I WISH to sincerely thank you for your continued support. I also want to take this opportunity to ask the

question, “How well do you know The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati (TCTC)?” Are you aware of all

that The Children’s Theatre has to off er in addition to our Broadway-quality productions at the Taft

Theatre, such as our touring division that takes the magic of live theatre directly into classrooms,

community centers, and libraries across the region? Or of our musical theatre classes that teach

vocal, drama, and dance skills to children ages 3–18? If

the answer is no, I encourage you to reach out to us to

learn more.

This is truly a transformative time for The Children’s

Theatre of Cincinnati, as we will be moving into our

new home on Red Bank Road in December. While

our MainStage series will remain at the Taft Theatre,

the new facility will off er more space for drama, vocal

music, and dance-specifi c studios for the above-men-

tioned, and ever-growing musical arts classes off ered

by TCTC. A small, 150-seat performance space will also

be a key component, along with a costume shop and

expanded rehearsal space for both MainStage produc-

tions and the touring shows. The company’s adminis-

trative offi ces will be housed in the new facility as well.

This exciting growth opportunity cements The Chil-

dren’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s commitment to leadership in arts education. Expanding performing

arts classes is a logical extension of The Children’s Theatre brand. A new facility allows TCTC to

meet demand, grow the class schedule, and create additional variety. It also supports engaging in

the evolution of future arts performers and patrons beyond our current scope.

While growing a child’s skill in performing arts, we look always to further develop the child as

a whole as well. For example, children become more articulate and confi dent speakers by taking

one of our acting classes, which increases their self-esteem, allowing them to become leaders in

another fi eld. A new theatrical facility gives us the opportunity to program for new audiences,

including preschoolers as well as middle and high school students. Thus, we begin the creation

of future arts patrons in Cincinnati at an even earlier age, and extend their engagement through

high school.

Please feel free to drive by our new home at 4015 Red Bank Road to witness the transformation

as it unfolds. Once our move is complete, we will share information on open house opportunities

so that you may experience the excitement of our new facility fi rsthand. Stay tuned, and again,

thank you for your continued patronage.

16THE CHILDREN’S THEATRE OF CINCINNATI 2015–2016 SEASON

I’M READY TO JUMP IN AS YOUR NEW ARTISTIC DIRECTOR!Welcome to The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati! We are going to have such an amazing

time together. I cannot wait to show you what we have in store this season.

This organization is my passion. I fi rst became involved with The Children’s Theatre in 2006,

when I was cast to play Aladdin in Disney’s Aladdin JR. Since then, I have served The Children’s

Theatre of Cincinnati for eight seasons as the Associate Artistic Director of MainStage. It was

an amazing journey for me as a director, choreographer, artist, and arts administrator. I am

excited to continue creating monumental family memories.

I believe live theatre can bring out the creative and imaginative child in us all. Theatre’s

incredible power to unlock the mind and its ability to explore, escape, dream, and play is

simply magic.

They don’t call it a “play” for nothing.

There has never been a more exciting time to play with The Children’s Theatre! In addition

to opening our new facility on Red Bank Road in December, we have an amazing season of

titles we have never produced on our stage. So, whether you are a mermaid, a blockhead, a

talking donkey, an evil queen, or a big green ogre, this 91st season is sure to entertain and

delight everyone, proving at 91, we are still young at heart.

I sincerely hope you enjoy our fi rst season together. I am looking forward to many more as

your new Artistic Director.

Enjoy the show!

18THE CHILDREN’S THEATRE OF CINCINNATI 2015–2016 SEASON

THE CHILDREN’S THEATRE OF CINCINNATI HAS BEEN ENTERTAINING

and educating audiences for nearly a century, and I am blessed and honored to be part of

the ever-growing expansion of the company. From my days training to be a performer at the

School for Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) to my career with the Cincinnati Ballet, I have

been fortunate to have a front-row seat to witness

the growth of the Cincinnati arts community.

And now my second career (wink, wink) puts me

at the forefront of historic changes with The Chil-

dren’s Theatre of Cincinnati. The rich history of TCTC

encompasses outstanding productions, performers,

and benefactors who make Cincinnati an artistic

jewel. Our new facility will aff ord us the opportunity

to serve and enrich the tri-state area with arts pro-

graming that will be second to none. Our performing

arts classes can now reach countless more children

in the community, channeling and nurturing their

creativity. Our touring productions can serve the

region year-round, inspiring young minds to learn

more about the theatre and the life lessons that the-

atre can strengthen. At the peak of it all, you’ll fi nd

our MainStage productions, which will continue to awe and amaze and demonstrate that The

Children’s Theatre is indeed theatre for all. Needless to say, I’m excited to get started.

20THE CHILDREN’S THEATRE OF CINCINNATI 2015–2016 SEASON

Well before the curtain rises for

Snow White and The Dancing Dwarfs, show rehearsals—

and plenty

of other ac-

tivities—will be under way at 4015

Red Bank Road in Hyde Park, the

expansive new home for The Chil-

dren’s Theatre of Cincinnati. Thanks

to donors and a generous gift from

the dissolution of The Corbett Foun-

dation, this new state-of-the-art fa-

cility will launch more youngsters

into the world of drama, vocal mu-

sic, and dance than ever in TCTC’s

91-year history.

RIGHT ON CUEThough the doors open for staff in December, stu-

dents will arrive when Session II resumes in January

2016. What they’ll fi nd will wow them: two dance

studios, two drama studios, and four vocal studios

that can host up to 2,400 students (in one 12-week

session) in an expanded array of

theatre classes, now available for stu-

dents as young as 3 years old. Pro-

fessional studios have sprung fl oors

and fl oor-to-ceiling mirrors and are

outfi tted with smart technology for

Bluetooth capability. And if an in-

structor wants to introduce students

to Gene Kelly’s famous Singin’ in the Rain dance sequence—voila!—a

permanent monitor in the room pro-

vides the clip with little ado. No more

rolling carts of bulky equipment and

tangled wires.

Another bonus: With three times the space, more

classes can be off ered at optimal times (evenings

and weekends) for busy families.

We have always been

nomads without a real home.

RAISE THE CURTAINBut wait! This 30,000-square-foot facility boasts more

than studio space. A large lobby, complete with WiFi,

allows parents to wait comfortably for their children

during class. Interior spaces are playful, touchable,

interactive, and fl ush with natural light. And while

this building was carefully crafted with a nod to the

children who are dually participants and audience,

every aspect of every space is professional-grade.

Fun fact: The facility’s gray water–reclamation sys-

tem, a cost- and environment-saving amenity, is the

fi rst of its kind in Cincinnati.

A highlight everyone can appreciate is the build-

ing’s main 150-seat proscenium-style theater, with

a modern lighting and sound system, roomy stage

with ample wing space, generous backstage area

with dressing rooms, a “green room,” and a costume

shop and storage vault. Plans are already underway to

off er a special production for homeschoolers in the

Red Bank Road facility’s main theater in May 2016.

With this home theater space, “We can continue

to produce our MainStage productions at the Taft;

but in addition to that, we can produce a preschool

series, so that we can have a production that runs

over two or three months rather than 10 days,” says

Kim Deaton, Managing Director and CEO of TCTC.

This is the more traditional—and very successful—

theatre model that The Children’s Theatre of Cincin-

nati strives to emulate.

REACHING FOR THE STARSCostuming class, anyone? Or perhaps your child is

fascinated by puppetry or even technical theatre.

Dream big, because “all are certainly in our wheel-

house of experience,” Deaton says, referencing the

many talented teaching artists who work with the

organization. These classes and many others are

more than possibilities with the capacity this new

facility aff ords, she says.

The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati will also

use its new home to extend its reach not only to a

wider range of students and arts patrons, but to the

community in a collaborative way. TCTC is open to

making its home theater space available for other

events. Beyond the brick-and-mortar structure, De-

aton sees great potential.

March 20 is World Day of Theatre for Children

and Young People. But why wait in the wings? The

excitement at the new Children’s Theatre of Cincin-

nati is happening now. All under one roof are more

classes, more productions—more opportunity to

learn and grow and imagine.

WELCOME HOME, TCTC!

We want people to know that we do it all, whether big productions, small theatre experiences, performance classes, or traveling theatre.

Having a home will allow us to move that forward. —Kim Deaton

TOO!

FALL DAY 45-minute Interactive WorkShop, Grades: PreK-2 Appreciate the joy, colors, and beauty of autumn in this companion piece to “Snow Day” and “Spring Day.” Join a cast of friendly animals as they get ready for the approaching winter! Along the way, your students will experience changes in nature and the cycles of human emotions, and learn how important it is to “be prepared.”

ART ALIVE Presented in collaboration with the Cincinnati Art Museum 45-minute Interactive WorkShop, Grades: K-8 This WorkShop combines the stimulation of visual arts and the dynamics of theater exercises to prompt creativity, imagination, critical thinking and public speaking skills.

MY PLATE 45-minute Interactive WorkShop, Grades: PreK-4 Learn healthy habits with Chef Bon Appetit as he teaches rambunctious Chip the importance of eating right, and humdrum Tofutti the value of creative exercise. In this interactive WorkShop, theater meets nutrition as we encourage students to think “outside the box” and eat “inside the pyramid!”

INTO THE HIVE 45-minute Interactive WorkShop, Grades: Pre-K-4 Are the bumblebees disappearing? Two teaching artists from TCTC will lead a scientific investigation into the world of bees, and by applying the scientific process we learn to interpret the buzz of data. By the end, your class will understand the plight of the humble bumblebees and be able to take steps to save them from extinction!

STOP BULLYING ME! 45-minute Interactive WorkShop, Grades: 3-8 Presented with the help of the Northern Kentucky Heath Department, students will learn and practice methods to conflict resolution, self-respect, and respect for others through discussion, writing, and role-playing.

MASTER STORYTELLER 45-minute Interactive WorkShop, Grades: K-8 The art of storytelling is as old as language itself. Take a journey into a world of imagination hearing some of the most amazing stories from one of the best storytellers introducing to you the Storytelling Triangle.
