Pope Francis’ Prayer for the Upcoming Synod Pope Francis has asked Catholics to pray for the Ordinary

General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on the Family,

set for October 2015. He hopes the following prayer will help

the Synod witness to “God’s merciful love for all families”:

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in you we contemplate

the splendor of true love; to you we turn with trust.

Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families

too may be places of communion and prayer, authentic

schools of the Gospel and small domestic Churches.

Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again

experience violence, rejection and division.

May all who have been hurt or scandalized

find ready comfort and healing.

Holy Family of Nazareth, may the approaching

WHAT’S THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS? THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES and the gospel reading both speak of how Jesus brings to fulfillment what had been announced. That raises the question of the relationship be-tween the two testaments. The Old Testament, or Hebrew scripture, can be viewed as the spiritual history of the human race; after the first 10 chapters of the Book of Genesis, this history focuses specif-ically on one community, the people Israel. We follow their story through good times and bad, when they prove faithful and especially when they are spectacularly unfaithful to their destiny as the people of God. The New Testament, Christian scripture, can’t be appreciat-ed apart from this earlier saga. For example, Isaiah foretells the birth of a Prince of Peace; the gospels announce the birth of Jesus. “In the beginning . . . God created the heav-ens and the earth,” Genesis intones, while the Gospel of John opens by declaring: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Throughout the Testaments we hear of God’s mercy and love and the constant striving of God to rescue us from our self-inflicted misery. As the rabbis say, the whole Bible can be boiled down to four words: We sin. God saves. Those last two words transform our history into the history of salva-tion.

VBS 2015

This year we will have our Vacation Bible School

June 22-26. This will take place in Winthrop at

St. Francis Hall 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. We are

using St. Francis Hall this year due to repairs/

renovations that will be taking place at our

school. The space at St. Francis is perfect for our

needs. There is the spacious hall, many rooms

and a beautiful outdoor grassy area for our Fun

and Games. Please join us for a fun-filled week of

sharing Bible stories, games, snacks, crafts, experi-

ments, and songs; and, for sharing God’s love with

each other and learning how to live in His love.

Please register early as supplies need to be ordered

early. We look forward to another great, rewarding,

fun week of VBS here at St. Michael Parish. There

is a registration fee of $40.00 that includes a T-shirt,

snacks, and other goodies. Registration forms and

letters are at the entrances of our churches and will

also be sent home with our St. Michael School chil-

dren and our Sunday Morning Faith Formation chil-

April Men's Prayer Group Gathering The St. Michael's Men prayer group will meet on Sunday April 19 (3-5 PM) at St. Joseph Church. The Men’s Pray-er Group is extending an invitation to all parishioners (men and women) who wish to participate in the gather-ing. The topic of discussion will focus on “What sort of King did we cheer on Palm Sunday, and what sort of King are we following now?” After the prayer session and quiet reflection in the church we will gather for cof-fee, light refreshments and conversation in the Hall.

Walk with Me: The Journey A faith-based network of women in the Augusta area assist-

ing women released from jail to transition safely and suc-

cessfully back into the community. Walk with Me: The

Journey is a new mentoring program for women coming

out of the Kennebec County Jail. It is modeled after the

successful mentoring program, My Sister’s Keeper, in the

Portland area. Too often there is no one to support women

in making a successful transition back into the community.

They often find themselves repeating the lifestyles that

placed them in jail, and may end up back there. Women are

invited to learn about the Walk with Me program while still

incarcerated, and , if interested , a process begins to match

them with a mentor.

To learn more about this program, you are invited to an

introductory meeting on Wednesday, April 29th at 6:30

p.m.at St. Matthew's Episcopal Parish Hall in Hallowell.

Thinking of relocating to a friendly Senior Residence? Howell House on Sewall Street in Au-

gusta is now taking applications. Each private apart-ment includes full kitchen, living/dining room, bedroom and full bath. Also included is a daily main meal in the community dining room, weekly housekeeping, laundry service for each unit and 24 hour Lifeline emergency response system for safety and well being. 2nd Annual Barrels & Brews Fundraiser Delight in an evening of craft beer & wine sampling, de-lectable hors d’oeuvres, and a champagne toast at the second annual Barrels & Brews to be held on Saturday, May 30, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Southern Maine Com-munity College in South Portland. Join us for a fun even-ing benefitting Catholic Charities’ 25+ programs. Tickets are $42 per person, and a table of eight is $320.
