The Central African Republic is currently one of the world’s most serious humanitarian crises. As violence is likely to continue in 2018, further increasing the needs, it is essential to continue providing families with agricultural and livestock support to reduce critical vulnerabilities and strengthen their resilience to shocks.
Objectives
FAO is working with partners in the Food Security Cluster to:• Provide immediate life-saving assistance though support to agricultural
production to improve the food security and nutrition of at-risk and affected populations.
• Strengthen local capacities to improve community resilience. • Enhance food security analysis, coordination and information systems.
Activities
Increase agricultural production
emergency agricultural kits | seeds and tools | cash transfers | vegetable seeds | income-generating activities | seed and tool fairs
Support livestock production
farmer field schools | vaccination | income-generating activities | nutrition education
Strengthen national and local capacities
food security analysis and information | early warning system | labour-intensive work
In 2018, restoring agricultural production is key to achieve stabilisation and peace in the Central African Republic.

Impact on food security
In the Central African Republic, the magnitude and severity of needs reached in 2017 recall those of the 2013-2014 crisis. More than one in two people need humanitarian aid to survive and one in four people are either internally displaced or refugees. The resurgence of armed conflict across the country has considerably undermined peace-building efforts and the return of displaced persons, significantly reducing the resilience capacity of the population, and any prospect of displaced populations’ return is receding. Intercommunal conflict between farmers and nomadic pastoralists during the transhumance season (October–May) in the border areas with Cameroon, Chad, South Sudan and Sudan have disastrous consequences for the stabilization of these areas. Forced population displacements – a 50 percent increase of IDPs in just one year since 2014 – and the collapse of basic socio-economic structures have prevented families from engaging in agricultural activities, with a 58 percent decrease of agricultural production compared with pre-crisis levels. This has led to the depletion of food stocks, rising prices, the adoption of negative coping mechanisms and increased dependency on food aid, leading to 30 percent of the population to be severely food insecure.
