Summer Preparations for Advanced World History: Ancient Civilizations with Dr. Bergstrom
#1 – National History Day The 2018 National History Day Theme is Triumph and Tragedy in History. Students should use the summer months to familiarize themselves with the NHD Rulebook, annual theme and begin searching for possible topics (resources can be found on http://www.nhd.org or on Dr. Bergstrom’s Office365 OneNote Notebook). Please communicate via email ([email protected]) over the summer prior to making a NHD topic selection and beginning research. #2 – Summer Reading Read Penguin Classic’s The Epic of Gilgamesh, translated by N.K. Sanders or Andrew George (book information below). This book will introduce students to the classic folklore associated with ancient Babylon and the region of Mesopotamia, one of our first units of study. It also relates to mythology in Mr. Milo’s English I Honors curriculum.
• Reference SparkNotes, CliffNotes, or LitCharts for additional assistance with comprehension of complex content, themes, etc.
• Mark the book while you read! Use the following link to learn more about marking the text of a book. This technique is also common among International Baccalaureate (IB) programs: http://slowreads.com/ResourcesHowToMarkABook-Outline.htm
• Prepare for a multiple-choice assessment of the entire book within the first few weeks of the school year. Students will be able to use any book that is MARKED using the techniques by slowreads.com during the assessment.
Where do I find The Epic of GIlgamesh? This adaptation of the classic is easily available at Barnes and Noble or Amazon.com. Please select one of the following translations:
• Anonymous, & Sanders, N.K. (trans.) (1960). The Epic of Gilgamesh. Penguin Classics. https://www.amazon.com/Epic-Gilgamesh/dp/014044100X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books& ie=UTF8&qid=1526584630&sr=1-1

World History. Students will be assessed on this information within the first few weeks of the school year. Detailed information can be found on Dr. Bergstrom’s PCS Class Notebook on Office365 OneNote. Copies of a study guide are available through Dr. Bergstrom; email at [email protected]. #4 – Unique Supplies for Advanced World History: Ancient Civilizations 2” Binder, 36 clear page protectors, one package of post-its, three-prong folder for Finance Park, active email address, & access to iTunes University for scholarly podcasts. Welcome to Your Math Class!
Honors Geometry/Honors Algebra I
Mr. Russell
Welcome to the start of a new school year! This year, students will be studying Geometry
and Algebra I from the Carnegie Geometry and McGraw-Hill Algebra series. The curriculum
is problem-centered which means that students will investigate mathematical ideas within
the context of a realistic problem, as opposed to looking only at numbers. Some problems
involve real-world applications or unusual situations, while others are purely mathematical. I
am looking forward to a successful year for all of our students. Please feel free to contact
me at any time with any questions. My email address [email protected]
Required Background
To successfully complete this course, you must pass the Florida Department of Education
End of Course Assessment and demonstrate an understanding of various algebraic and
geometric concepts through tests, quizzes and homework throughout the 2018-2019 school
years.
Required Materials
To successfully complete this course, you will need:
• College rule notebook paper
• Pencils
• Scientific calculator
• Ruler, compass, protractor (for
Geometry)

Curriculum Expectations
Spanish 2 curriculum expands upon the knowledge gained in the Spanish 1 class. Students will become immersed in Spanish on a daily basis and will be expected to perform in the different modes of communication: Interpretive Listening, Interpretive Reading, Interpersonal Communication, Presentational Speaking, and Presentational Writing. Practice builds proficiency; hence, students are expected to spend 30 minutes daily on oral and written practice outside of class. Acquisition of vocabulary and grammar are the tools which allow for communication and are essential to achieve proficiency. There will be random formative assessments on current and prior concepts. We use the study buddy system for missed notes and assignments. By the end of this course, students will be able to talk and write about topics of personal and cultural interest in the past, present, and future tense.
Students are expected to bring all materials to class every day and will not be permitted to leave the classroom
to retrieve materials. Each chapter will have several tests and culminate in the District Wide Assessment exam.
Late Assignments/Make up work
Assignments are due on the date assigned. Any homework, tests, projects, or project presentations, missed
during an excused absence will be handled as per the district guidelines (please refer to the Code of Student
Conduct). We use the study buddy system to encourage accountability for makeup work – please check with
your assigned study buddy for missed work, assignments and notes. Students are responsible to contact the
teacher when work is not turned in on time or tests are missed.

Units of Study:
The Role of Food in a Country’s Culture A Balanced & Healthy Lifestyle
Shopping, Clothing & Money around the World Travel and Celebrations
Grading:
• Summative Assessments: tests, projects (70%)
• Formative Assessments: quizzes, etc. (15%)
• Notebook: classwork, homework, notes (12%)
• Participation: Spanish language use, on task behavior, etc. (3%)
Educational Resources: The scope of this course goes beyond the basic material presented in the equivalent course outside of the Center for Gifted Studies. We don’t have a textbook, but the Holt Expresate 1 Florida Edition is a good resource. We will be using other resources besides notes, such as novels completely in Spanish, authentic artifacts, and web based resources.
Use of Technology: All conditions and responsibilities presented in the student handbook will be
honored in the Spanish classroom. Students may not use any device to record, transmit, or post images,
audio or video taken at school at any time, without the express permission of a teacher. High School Credit: This section will explain all necessary requirements to obtain one additional high school credit for Spanish to meet the Florida foreign language requirement.
This course is coded as a High School course, which means that any student with a score of a C or higher
will earn one high school credit.
It is recommended that students who earn a C, D, or F in a high school class retake it for Forgiveness, as a grade lower than a B will negatively impact a student’s high school GPA.
