She’s excited to be part of the team.

Maegan (Strueby) Clark will be curling in the Scotties Women’s Provincial playdowns with the Jolene Campbell rink in Humboldt Janu-ary 26 to 29.

O r i g i n a l l y f r o m Marysburg, located just a few kilometres north of Humboldt, Clark started curling when she was about 12-years-old and she has loved the sport ever since. She credits her parents, Wayne and Nor-

een Strueby, with getting her into the sport.

“Both of my parents curled,” said Clark.

Her parents used to curl competitively, but once they started a fam-ily and had four children, they decided to curl casu-ally in the area, at local bonspiels.

“It was just something they did and they en-couraged us to do,” said Clark.

Curling has always been a big part of her life. She curled both in her home community of Marysburg and through

Muenster School. “I was also lucky

enough to curl at the natural ice rink in Marys-burg before it closed down,” said Clark.

After high school, Clark curled with Camp-bell in the Junior Wom-en’s playdowns together for three years.

“ We w e r e l u c k y enough to go to Junior Women’s Nationals to-gether in 2000,” said Clark. “We did really well there. We won the bronze medal.”

The two girls con-tinued to curl on the

same rink for about four more years, until they fi nished university and went through some life changes.

“After we both con-vocated from university, I moved to Melfort for my fi rst teaching job and she moved to Regina for a job,” said Clark.

Although they were playing on different rinks, Clark said they stayed in touch.

“Then this year, we just decided, since we had so much fun curl-ing together, to give it another try,” said Clark.

“We’ve had lots of suc-cess together.”

Clark has only been curling casually for the last two years. After hav-ing a baby two years ago in January, she decided to take some time off.

Even though she has not been playing com-petitively the last couple years, Clark still is excited to play in the provincial playdowns in her home community.

“I hope we get a lot of fans out,” said Clark. “We have a very high level of play among the women in our province and Humboldt also has some of the best ice in our province, so it’s going to be a great weekend.”

Clark said there are great curling clubs in Humboldt and Muenster, making it easy to get out and curl with friends.

“It’s easy to do once a week, to get together with your team and get on the ice,” said Clark. “I know (curling) will be around this area for a long time.”

She is looking forward to seeing all the other players out there, meet-ing up with old friends and maybe making some new ones.

“Curling, it’s not the kind of sport where you go to the rink and then go home,” said Clark.

“All the curlers will be at the extra events and cabarets, mingling with the fans. They will get to meet some people and sign some autographs. It’s going to be a really great weekend.”

Clark has always en-joyed the sport because “it’s competitive, it’s stra-tegic and it’s something I will be able to do until I’m old,” she laughed.

Clark is also grateful to have wonderful sup-port from her family, especially her husband, Jeremy, who has been a great help.

“He is a big part of me being successful this year,” said Clark.

The event the Humboldt Curling Club has been anticipating is now literally just around the corner.

From January 25-29, the club will host the Scotties Provincial Tourna-ment of Hearts, which means 12 ladies’ teams from around the prov-ince will be spending fi ve days in the city, competing for one spot in the country’s most profi led curling com-petition for women.

“There will be four teams from the north, four teams from the south, and four teams have already pre-qualifi ed based on their CTRS (Canadian Team Ranking System),” said Joy Butler, chair of the organizing committee for the tournament. “We also have a local team made up of women from this area that is guaranteed to be playing, Team Jolene Campbell.”

Butler, a curler herself in the ladies’ Wednesday night league, and a spare for the tournament in case of illness or

injury, is heading up a core committee of 25 people who are coordinating about 150 volunteers that will be par-ticipating in the event.

“I have an amazing committee,” she admits. “There are 25 of these green jackets walking around the city, and they’ve done this before. They know exactly what needs to be done in every area. I’ve had very little to do, except to be the spokesperson.”

The tournament kicks off on Wednesday afternoon, January 25,

with the fi rst draw at approximately 2 p.m., followed by the offi cial open-ing ceremony, and an evening game. Three games are scheduled most days, with the exception of Thursday morning, when all the ladies will be attending a luncheon at the Bella Vista Inn. All of the information regarding the pools and the draws is available on the Saskatchewan Curling Association (SCA) website.

As well as the scheduled games, the committee has been busy organizing a few peripheral events that should keep the hype building during the tournament.

The main extra events are two caba-rets at Jubilee Hall, featuring two very popular local bands, 40 Oz. Philosophy on Friday night, and the Barley Boys Saturday night.

“It’s going to be a really good op-portunity to mix with the players,” Butler added. “The players are obvi-ously invited to come out, and most of them probably will, so it will be a great opportunity to do that.”

There will also be an exhibition wheelchair curling game on Saturday night, after the fi rst playoff game, and before the cabaret. The Saskatchewan

Wheelchair Curling Team will be com-ing out to curl against an able-bodied team who will also be playing in wheelchairs.

“It’s something the SCA is starting to do to promote wheelchair curling, and we’re looking forward to it,” said But-ler. “So we’re going to ask around the community if anyone in a wheelchair would like to try it, they are more than welcome to come out, or they can just come and watch.”

Otherwise, Butler added, they will volunteer some people to sit in a wheel-chair and play against the provincial team.

Having the Scotties Provincial Tour-nament of Hearts right here in Hum-boldt will provide an excellent op-portunity for those who are interested in seeing some top-level curling live, without having to drive for miles. An

event pass costs $45, and includes entry to all the games, the ceremonies, the ex-hibition wheelchair game, and the two cabarets. Day passes and draw passes are also available, and if people want to come just to the cabarets, it’s $10 at the door each night.

And although our winter so far hasn’t been one where snowstorms have prohibited drivers being able to get out on the roads, all the games will be broadcast live on a webcast through Saskcurl.com.

“It is a fantastic feature,” Butler said. “I really enjoyed it last year. We want people in the surrounding communi-ties that couldn’t come out to be able to watch it.”

As well, the two fi nal games will be broadcast on the Access cable chan-

nel.During the event, spectators will

have a choice of sitting ice-side on bleachers that will line the sheets, providing a close-up view of the ac-tion. The regular seating area will have television monitors for better viewing of the opposite end, or else people can enjoy the curling club’s upstairs lounge, which provides an elevated view of the games. Throughout the event, they plan to have snacks that are not normally available, provided by the Jaycees, and beverages.

“You can even drink on the ice,” Butler said with a laugh. “One side of the stands will be able to buy beer or coffee and kahlua.”

That would be to keep the inside fi re glowing, she assured the Journal.
