‘Bringing all People into God’s love’.

13th Sunday of the Year 26

th June 2016

‘Led by the Holy Spirit and nourished by the Eucharist, we grow in unity and love of God,

reaching out to all people with compassion and kindness, and working for justice and

peace.’ Dear Friends,

Last weekend we had the second of our Archdiocesan Pastoral Council Meetings for the year, (we have four meetings a

year). Over the weekend we prayed with and reflected on Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation “Amoris Laetitia” – on

“Love in the Family.”

Specifically we spent time with the following questions:

1. “What lessons from family life can we apply to the way our parishes, schools and the diocese operate?”

2. “How do we keep promoting the Church’s ideals without making it impossible – bearing in mind that Pope Francis

has asked us to appeal to young people’s courage, commitment, heroism, love, generosity and enthusiasm?”

3. “How can parishes support families?” Amoris Laetitia is a very important document and I believe that individuals, families, schools, colleges and parishes

need to reflect on this for the sake of our families.

While we need to do much more planning, some of the things we spoke about at the APC meeting were:

Schools and parishes should be places where we feel loved and know we are accepted.

They are places where we should be able to bring anything with us, and places of genuine and generous hospitality.

There are many opportunities to acknowledge and affirm family life – engagements- marriages- wedding anniversaries

- the birth of children.

Parents expecting a baby can be blessed publicly, thus affirming the value of life and the joy of parenthood. The

National Liturgy Office has prepared an excellent resource for this.

There are many possibilities for groups to be established in parishes to support and affirm families, for couples to

“walk alongside” others and to share advice and support, for parents to “mentor” new parents.

We have wonderful Marriage Preparation programmes throughout the Archdiocese – these need to be promoted with

enthusiasm. Priests can also reach out and support couples whose weddings they have celebrated in order to

support them.

When couples celebrate significant Wedding anniversaries they can be included in Prayers of the Faithful and publicly

congratulated, and invited to renew their marriage vows.

The APC had some good discussions; the above are just a few ideas we spoke about. However it cannot remain at that

level. Please reflect as individuals, families, community groups, schools and parishes about what you can do to uphold

and promote the beauty of family life.

The Holy Father wrote; “Let us make this journey as families, let us keep walking together. What we have been

promised is greater than we can imagine. May we never lose heart because of our limitations, or ever stop seeking that

fullness of love and communion which God holds out before us.” (AL 325)

With every blessing - Cardinal John
