It was a good day for golfing, and a good day to help fund the many youth causes that help our community remain a great place to grow up. The golfers entry fees - and the many donations and volunteers - raised enough to cover several of the $500 college scholarships that the
Terry Fletchall from Santiam Memorial Hospital takes the green at hole 16.
The volunteers (in no particular order): Jan & Mike Long, Jakira Ballard, Ken & Kathy Kindred, Diane Ballard, Sandy Lyness, Myca Keto, Penny Keen, Cathy Morris, Margo Carty
and Katy McConnell, among others that helped the day go smoothly. Volunteers not pictued: Jeff & Joe Ballard (out
playing) and Greg Pisano.

Schools warn of fundraising scammersReports of suspects asking for fraudulent donations
for wrestling, football teams The Santiam Canyon School Dis-trict has reported several recent inci-dents involving an ex-student going door-to-door requesting fraudulent donations for the high school foot-ball program. The Linn County Sheriff’s Of-fice also received a call from a con-cerned Mill City resident reporting a juvenile collecting money for the high school wrestling team. “As far as we know, there should be no solicitation of monies at this point,” said Caroline Gillaspy, ac-
tivities coordinator. She said that with our community of generous do-nors, it’s especially important to be wary of adults and teenagers asking for money - in person or over the phone. Residents are asked to contact the school district (503-897-2321) or Caroline Gillaspy (503-8970-2311x240) before donating. “We want to be sure they know it is really going into where it should be,” said Gillaspy. No one has been charged for the illegal requests.

The talents of the children in the North Santiam Canyon were showcased with help from the visiting actor/directors of the Missoula Children’s Theatre Inter-national Tours last weekend at Santiam Auditorium. The local cast harmonized beautifully in last weekend’s production accompanied by local pianist JoAnne Hebing, with her grandson Max Hebing on guitar. The jokes were “on the spot” and the laughter flowed freely through receptive audience.

Fairview Cemetery gets ongoing mapping
Pictured: (top) Dunnell and Nata-lie Cole look for identification on a
marker. (Bottom) Debbie Fawcett and Bruce Sexton worked with mapper Joe Romey (behind, left) with members of
YoungLife and Santiam Canyon High’s Business Club to correct and expand
the cemetery map.
Ten years ago, California resident Joe Romey came to visit his relatives at Fariview Cemetery to find his step-grandfather - and found the map of gravsites had been vanadalized. Since then, he’s been coming back every year to update and organize all the gravesites, with the eventual goal of making a mylar map for the cemetery. This year, local residents came out to help his efforts, like Dunnell and Natalie Cole. “You wonder sometimes how people are related,” said Dunnell Cole. “You hear stories and this brings it to life.” Cole was part of the YoungLife Christian youth group that had seven members looking for markers and names. Member Bruce Sexton was also there helping with errors like misspell-ings or women simply marked as “Mrs. JD”. Others were marked with their nicknames. “We’re finding a lot of people that aren’t on the map,” said Sexton. Fairview Cemetery is funded entirely by dona-tions and maintained by Dan Lemke.
Susann Heller, class of ‘67, and cousin Chuck Kuhlman, class of ‘56, helped orga-nize this year’s Santiam High alumni annual reunion Aug 7 with over 80 attendees. These grown up kids represented classes spanning from 1934 graduate Arey Po-drabsky and 1936 graduate Rudy Rada, to Paul Freeman who graduated in 1972. Special honorees were the 14 members of the class of ‘61 who had just celebrated their 50th reunion the day before.

Local senior gets 103rd birthday wish
Press release - Local resident Fern Kahlenbeck will celebrate her 103rd birthday this month. When asked what she would like to do she said, “I’d like to ride in a convertible car to The Oregon Garden - that’s something I’ve always wanted to do.” Marian Estates staff, where Kalenbeck lives, reached out to area businesses to get this seniors’ long-time wish granted. On August 25th, her day will start with a convertible ride, courtesy of Jim Lar-son in his beautiful, blue 57 Chevrolet. A proud member of the Obsolete Fleet Chevrolet Club, Jim’s happy to help with Fern’s wish and is looking forward to being her chauffeur. They will con-tinue to Salem to lunch at the Wild Pear, who has awarded Fern lunch for four. After lunch, they with make their way in style to The Oregon Garden, who has graciously donated tickets for Fern and the caregivers and family members ac-companying her. Fern is not particular about what she wants to see while there, she just wants to “see the beauty.” Marian Estates Care Home in Sublim-ity is proud to help Fern celebrate her Birthday and looks forward to the day of fun the 103 year old is about to have!

Mill City 4th of July Committee seeks mem-
bers for 2012 festival The Mill City Fourth of July Commit-tee was formed in December 2010 as a 5-7 member standing committee. The committee meets on a monthly basis as outlined in the resolution creating the committee, beginning in October, and is responsible for organization, schedul-ing, and facilitation of the Annual Mill City Fourth of July Celebration. The first official City of Mill City Fourth of July Celebration was a huge success, bringing in nearly 40 vendors, 50+ parade entries, and a first ever mu-sic in the park series along with many other family friendly events. The 2012 celebration promises to be just as, if not more successful, with many new events
being planned in conjunction with local community groups! Citizens interested in serving on the Mill City Fourth of July Committee must submit a letter of interest to Mayor Tim Kirsch. For more information con-tact City Recorder Stacie Cook at City Hall (897-2302). All letters of interest should be turned in at City Hall by Sep-tember 20, 2011. The committee appointments will be made at the regular city council meeting of September 27, 2011.

The Blazing Saddles 4-H club were just that - BLAZING - this last July at the Linn County Fair. The local kids and their horses competed in fun games like barrel racing and pole bend-ing - and took the plate in the Working Ranch Horse class with a clean sweep of over-all high point winners Kaycee Dezurney, Haley
Wallen, and Raeley Harrison. Becca Lorenz received four Premier ribbons and three Medallions in western, flags, and the keyhole race - a spin on the dime game requiring precision stops and turns. She qualified to move on to the Ore-gon State Fair, with Kaycee Dezurney, who also won three Premiers and a Medallion in
the speed-and-turn barrel racing classes. Realey Harrison got three Premiers and a Medallion in poles and Carson Otto, a first year participant, was awarded the Mickey Zucker award, for being the most improved over the club year. Other first year participants who did well were Han-nah Fencl, who received a 2nd in Showmanship and 1st place in Western Equitation on her horse Lucky. Paige Hanna and her horse Sunny received a 2nd in Showman-
ship, Trail, and Western Equitation. The 4-H group spokesperson Nicole Dezur-ney said, “I was very proud of (the Blazing Saddles)...what a showing way to go! Thank you to our parents that always jump in. I nev-er have to ask our club to get in there, just have to go find people to get them a break! Thank you for all your hard work!”

Local singles group to hold kick-off BBQ The Aumsville Singles group, recently started by Lorie Walters and sponsored by the City of Aumsville, will be host-ing a kick-off BBQ on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2-5pm at Mill Creek Park. The group is non-religious, open to any singles ages 21-125 and alcohol free. “There’s an abundance of singles in the Canyon area just waiting to connect and become better acquainted,” said Walters, who is looking for input from local singles about what type of activi-ties the group should organize.“We have
ideas but we would like to see what par-ticipants want.” In the works are twice monthly potlucks, outings, hikes, base-ball games, beach trips or seasonal par-ties. The kick-off BBQ is free (funded by the Aumsville Park and Recreation Committee) and future events will prob-ably be funded by the individuals who participate. For more information: [email protected] or Aumsville Sin-gles Outreach on Facebook. Come to the BBQ - and bring a single friend!
Karen Widmer brings tie-dye wearable art to Cascade Foothills Saturday Faire
Locally known for her creative and af-fordable tie-dyed clothing, Gates resi-dent and artist Karen Widmer will be returning to the Cascade Foothills Satur-day Faire August 13 in Gates. Her tie-dye art is popular with everyone from true-to-the-earth hippies to those who want to go colorful with class. Widmer has been making tie-dyed clothing since she was a teenager and this is her third year creating the color-ful fun professionally.
She helped start the Cascade Foothills Satyrday Faire three years ago and need-ed something to sell. “We all got a free booth space and everyone else had way-cool things to sell,” said Widmer. “So I bought some books and started making T-shirts and other clothes.” Her most popular item is a center twist, figure flattering ladies top that retails at $24 (sizes sm-xxl). “I like mixing it up and learning new things - and being aware of what colors are in fashion.”
Canyon Critter’s Academy is taking registrations for this fall for ages 3-5. Regis-tration forms can be picked up at 100 SE Juniper Street. An open house will be in September for the students and their parents. First day of school is September 12th, 2011. It is easy to make plans for enjoying the North Santiam this August because good conditions exist every day for different activities & times. Fish move around within the river system daily to stay within their temperature comfort zone. Upstream from Mill City, fishing is best in the mornings and rafting is best in the after-noons. Fish like the Mehama-area North Santiam in the evenings and mornings, and when the river warms up they like to go upstream to get into the colder water. Anglers do best in the Me-hama area in the mornings, and swimmers and rafters like conditions in the afternoons. Little North Fork flows are too low for rafting and too warm for good fishing. They are, how-ever, ideal for swimming. Some rafters that go down the main North Santiam stop where the Little North Fork flows in and walk upstream to swim in the warm water. So far this season, there are 43,419 Chinook salmon and 20,666 Summer Steelhead in the Willamette River system. Many of them come up the North Santiam. The salmon fishing sea-son for Chinooks will close on August 15, but steelhead season is open all year and the best fishing of the year is often in August, Septem-ber, and part of October, depending on rainfall. A few Fall Caddis flies have been emerg-ing, and big trout love to feed on them. We are allowed to keep two fin clipped trout per day in August, and in September we must release them. We can keep three steelhead per day if they have a clipped fin.
