HUMAN RELATIONS SUNDAY

SUNDAY, JANUARY 19

The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote in his Letter from a Birmingham Jail, “I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be, and you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be.”

On Human Relations Sunday, we have an opportunity to make an impact in communities where people struggle because they don’t have the tools or resources to reach their God-given potential. The special offering supports neighborhood ministries through Community Developers, community advocacy in the United States and Puerto Rico through United Methodist Voluntary Services, and work with at-risk youth through the Youth Offender Rehabilitation Program.

One of the wonderful aspects of The United Methodist Church is that, together with other congregations, can do so much more together than we ever could do on our own. Please consider giving generously on Sunday, January 19 because together we do more!

Thank you to everyone who decided to purchase gifts with stars from the Giving Tree! You have certainly made Christmas a happier time for some needy children!

Betsy Meikle

SPRC will be honoring Joanne Mansfield, our beloved Financial Secretary and church member, by hosting the Fellowship Hour (in the Gathering Place) on Sunday, January 26, starting after the 8 AM Service and continuing through the morning.

The congregation is encouraged to bring farewell cards or to write in the memory book which will be in the Gathering Place.

Thank you to Terry Macha, Von & Marilyn Smith, Al & Jo Swanson, and Ginny Thompson. Each month this group take times out of their day to fold, sticker, and label the Caller.

Thank you also to Nancy Buehler, Nancy Donahue, Dorene Larkey, Carol Anne McCleery, and Beth Reams. These kind women man the church office during staff meetings so I can attend the staff meetings uninterrupted and enjoy the occasional day or week off.

CONTEMPLATIVE STUDY

SUNDAYS BEGINNING JANUARY 12 9 AM, WESLEY HALL

If you’re ready to trade in anger for understanding, consider reading and discussing The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion by Jonathan Haidt with the Sunday Morning Contemplative Small group.

If you’re interested in joining the group, please contact Pastor Carrie at

440-234-3525 x105 or [email protected] or Pat Nixon at

[email protected] or 440-532-9486.

LENTEN DEVOTIONAL

You have a story to tell! This year’s Lenten Devotional, written by our congregation, will focus on the theme of “Go” – how has God inspired you to go out into the world in service? What are your stories about sharing your faith in word or deed?

To sign up for one of the 40 devotions in our annual spiritual practice and offering of reflections,

please contact Claire Powell at 440-263-8745 or [email protected].

READ & GROW DISCUSSION GROUP

THE SECOND MONDAY OF THE MONTH, 6:30-8 PM, PARLOR

Read and Grow 2020 starts a new decade. This is a good time to join our reading group. We start with Joys and Concerns, Devotions, Discussion, and end with Prayer.

JANUARY 13 - Spark of Light by Jodi Picoult The warm fall day starts like any other at the Center—a women’s reproductive health services clinic—its staff offering care to anyone who passes through its doors. Then, in late morning, a desperate and distraught gunman bursts in and opens fire.

February 10 - Educated by Tara Westover (A memoir) Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent.

The entire reading list can be found at: http://www.umcb.org/adult-faith-opportunities/.

For more information or to answer any question you may have, call Janet Mallarnee at 440-235-7331, Betsy Meikle at 440-243-5767, or Margaret Proctor at 440-243-9498.

COSROW

Finally! Central Park has placed a statue commemorating Women!! The three recognized are Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. This year marks the 100th year since women were “given” the right to vote! The statue was approved by a narrow margin! (There had been statues of Mother Goose, Alice in Wonderland, and Juliet with Romeo!)

FREE WEDDING DAY & SWEETHEART DANCE

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 15

Planning is now underway for our second annual FREE Wedding Day and Sweetheart dance. Are you or a couple you know, newly engaged and ready to tie the knot? We would love to bless you on your journey with a FREE wedding service, Saturday, February 15. We plan to do several weddings that day, so secure your spot now! We'll marry (and renew vows for) as many couples as we can as we celebrate the gift of God's love. One preliminary meeting with pastors is required.

We would also love to celebrate with you and your loved ones at a reception/Sweetheart Dance to follow that evening. All church and community members are invited to dance the night away.

For more information or to volunteer for hospitality for the Wedding Ceremonies or

Sweetheart dance, please contact Pastor Carrie at 440-234-3525 x105 or [email protected].

“TRANSFORM THE WORLD” FAIR DURING MLK WEEK WITH BALDWIN WALLACE UNIVERSITY

SUNDAY, JANUARY 19, 9AM-NOON

We are excited to again partner with B.W. in the programming for MLK week, celebrating its 30th anniversary of honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. by inspiring our community to walk in his footsteps. This year’s theme is “Tilting the Scales of Justice”.

This year, we are leading a “Transform the World” Fair on Sunday, January 19, 9 AM – Noon. We will highlight both missions and projects of our church, as well as the community - all of which aim at transforming the world to be a more just and compassionate home for all people.

If you’re looking for ways to continue to be about Kingdom work, come and find out how God can use your gifts in our community. A full week of events can be found on the Outreach board.

If you have a cause or organization you’d like to share, please contact Pastor Carrie at 440-234-3525 x105 or [email protected].

MISSIONS TEAM AND BUILDING HOPE IN THE CITY

VOLUNTEER TRAINING - JANUARY 15 5:30 PM, THE HOPE CENTER (15135 TRISKETT

ROAD, CLEVELAND, OH 44111)

Our missions team is partnering with “Building Hope in the City” to explore ways we can support and encourage our immigrant and refugee community. The first step to learning more is to attend “Building Hope 101” on January 15 at 5:30 PM. Register at https://buildinghopeinthecity.org/cleveland/

volunteer-training/. We hope to send a crew from our church to begin discerning how we might be of service.

A big thank you as well for all who helped with Getting Ahead at Willson UMC this fall. The program graduates and their families were a joy to work with, as well all of you, who made this mission possible. We look forward to continued work with Bridges Out of Poverty programs.

JANUARY E-BIT ("ENVIRONMENTAL TIDBIT") FROM CHURCH & SOCIETY

Using S.A.L.T. this winter? Follow these tips.

If you need to use salt on your driveway or sidewalk this winter, according to the Cuyahoga Soil & Water Conservation District (CSWCD) to protect our waterways it's important to keep these tips in mind. S - Road Salt (sodium chloride) only works above 15 degrees fahrenheit so use sand for traction or use an ice melting product made for colder temperatures. Amount - One 12 oz. cup full of salt can cover about 10 sidewalk squares. Don't use more than is needed. Location - as makes sense, only apply salt on your driveway or sidewalk, not your lawn or near trees. Time - For best results, apply salt before snow falls or right after snow is removed from the driveway or sidewalk.

For more information, visit or contact CSWCD at https://cuyahogaswcd.org/ or 216-524-6580.
