DIRECTOR’S NOTEIn the ever-expanding world of confections, there are many choices: pies and meringues and loaded chocolate chip cookies and rich custards (frozen and otherwise). But for special occasions, it is the cake that reigns supreme. Whether it’s the moist richness of a carrot cake, the airy delight of an angel food, or the compressed delight of a flourless chocolate, the cake is the go-to treat for birthdays, retirement parties, communions—and of course weddings, where the meticulously planned, elegantly prepared and elaborately decorated pastry is the centerpiece of the celebration. Wedding cakes are much, much more than mere dessert; they are the symbols of the marital union at its happiest moment, the baked encapsulation of the joy and abundance that are the emotional core of the day. But with the rise of “nontraditional” weddings of husband to husband or wife to wife, the cake has taken on another role: as the political pawn of those who rejoice in such unions, and those who emphatically do not.

Thus it is the lowly cake that is the focal point (and title character) of Bekah Brunstetter’s wise, funny and slyly profound play. The situation is a familiar one to those who’ve read the headlines in the last couple of years: Della, a small-town master baker is asked by the daughter of a cherished friend to provide the wedding cake for her upcoming nuptials, only to demur when the baker discovers that the intended groom is actually a bride. But instead of the polarizing Facebook posts and eventual court cases of which we are all aware, Brunstetter instead offers a much more nuanced—and compassionate—view of both sides of the question, delving into the lives and beliefs of all of the concerned parties with respect, humor and refreshing candor. In the end, The Cake avoids the inflamed rhetoric of Fox and MSNBC to focus on how the opposing sides of a hot-button issue can actually talk to one another about their differing points of view, allowing us to understand and empathize with both sides, whatever our own most cherished beliefs may be.

In the end, The Cake achieves something that is unfortunately lacking in our current culture: the hope that we can actually respect those “on the other side.” There are no magic solutions in Brunstetter’s world, no easy answers that will solve the divisions that pull us apart. But there is the cake, within whose seductive richness we can find comfort, love—and connection.
