FROM

Dear Readers,

The new Business BFF Magazine was designed to give an outlet to home-based, micro, small business owners and everyday people with exceptional inspirational stories. We practice the fundamen-tals of business with a fresh, vibrant, fun approach.

Entrepreneurship is exciting! We want to bring that emotion to the magazine. Our magazine was created, written and designed by members of the tri-state area. Our goal is to showcase busi-nesses, connect, educate, empower and entertain its readership.

There are a lot of great businesses and services in Delmarva but no one knows they exist. Due to location, advertising budgets, lack of exposure, whatever the case, we have partnered with these busi-nesses to help their voices be heard. We promote, not endorse businesses. We advise consumers to do their due diligence when seeking services.

They are your neighbors, friends, family members, church pa-rishioners, and the person standing next to you in the check line. Join us and let’s support our community members in business. If you have any questions, comments or would be interested in contributing to our magazine please email us at [email protected].

Or maybe your thoughts are focused on your worries of the future? Mix any of these thoughts with all of the responsibilities of daily life (family, career, finances, friendships, health, etc.), and it’s easy to feel one step closer to the edge and about to break! But guess what? There is a way out. In those moments it is very important to pause. Just stop whatever you are doing, or more importantly THINKING, and breathe – take a nice, long, deep breath and exhale to release those thoughts and remember where you are. Where are you, you ask? You are HERE. You are in the NOW.By doing this very brief exercise and reminding yourself where you are, you will be able to focus on the only moment that matters - NOW. What you choose to do, think or be, right now is what you control. You cannot change the yesterdays, nor can you control what might or might not happen tomorrow, or the next day or even next year. It is in the current moment that you can choose that your past will no longer affect you and the thoughts you make now will assist in shaping the future you dream. When moments of overwhelm set in, I like to suggest the use of P-A-U-S-E:P - Pray (or meditate) centering yourself in the fact that God has everything under control and that control is for Him alone, not you. A - Ask for guidance or assistance from a trusted friend or family member to assist you in sticking to your personalgoals.U - Use the resources available to you. Talk to others in your inner circle of friends, loved ones and associates who may be able to assist you in your current situation. S - Seek to educate yourself on the topics and issues that are important to you. Stepping out of your thoughts intoresearching what interests you will get you closer to takingthe actions necessary to make your dreams a reality.E - Exercise your body to stay healthy, but also exercise the right to say ‘no’ if you know your plate is already full. Despite the fact that time seems out of control, the truthis no one controls your time except you. Take responsibility for how you spend your time and energy and use it to beginlaying the foundation for the life you desire.

By Laura A. WoodHere and NowDo you ever have those moments where all of your thoughts keep going back to your yesterdays – reminiscing over the good ole days wishing your todays were just as great, regret over some bad decisions wishing you had handled things differently, or internally reliving a traumatic event living in fear that it will happen again?

In using this method, the mind will be trained to be proactive versus reactive. Over time, it produces a feeling of empowerment by knowing the saying ‘this too shall pass’ really rings true and that the now is all we are really blessed with to live. We must make the most of each day, wouldn’t you agree?

MY NAME IS VICTORYBy Minister Katina Norwood Powell

On a cool Monday, March 5, 1973, I was born and given a name. As an adult, I accepted the proposal of marriage and my name changed. The majority of little girls grow up dreaming of the day their name will change through marriage. I never thought my name would change again. My story begins as a little girl being raised in a loving two parent home.We were a middle-class family and I was a daddy’s girl. In our beautiful home, I had my own room. I did not want for anything. As I went through my adolescent, teenage years and entered into adulthood I was awed by others testimonies. I could empathize but could not relate to their struggles. I had no testimony of my own. I began to long for a testimony.I heard someone say, “Be careful what you ask God for because you just may get it.” Shortly after turning 21 years old my testimony began. The enemy came in like a flood. He was ready to steal, kill and destroy. I have suffered with severe anxiety attacks, cardiac arrest and life threatening allergic reactions.Something happens when you turn your life over to God. Once you ask to be forgiven from all of your sins and acknowledge Christ as your Lord and Savior. The enemy turns up the ante. I could always encourage others to come out of their dry place but never encourage myself. The storms have been great and long lasting. I have surpassed the length of time of the woman with the issue of blood in the bible. My hope had almost diminished because the trials were consuming me. I spoke to the wind, “Stop blowing!” I told the thunder, “Stop roaring!” I demanded the lighting, “Stop flashing!”In that moment I realized two things. The first was my desire to have a testimony. Secondly, I have the power and the authority to change my situation. After 18 years of fasting and praying, I realized I was the hold up. God was not allowing me to suffer in my storms.

Inspiration CornerReflections of the Lord’s effect on the business world

The fact is, He has been waiting on me to get into a place to receive his power to speak life in my own situation. After so many trials and tribulations, my faith has only gotten stronger. When I recognized whom I serve my name changed again; in the Spirit, my new name is Victory!I have victory over my flesh! When the doctors counted me out, my Spiritual Doctor continued to give me life. I have victory over my enemies because they became my footstool! I have victory over my haters! Every effort they put forth to destroy me only made me stronger. I have victory over the enemy because every weapon that was formed against me did not prosper!God is the same yesterday, today and forever more. What He has done for me, he can do for you! What does my story have to do with business? Every area of your life that you are not victorious in has an effect on all facets of your life.My book still has no ending. I’m not where I want to be but I’m not where I used to be. Now at the age of 39 years old, I’m saved, sanctified, satisfied and walking in the glory of God with my new name Victory!

I believe in God. This is my opinion and response to the question I was asked. The Separation of Church and State has left a negative connotation with many religious Americans.

President Thomas Jefferson, in a letter to the Danbury, Connecticut Baptists Associa- tion, on January 1, 1802, explained the Separation of Church and State was to keep the state out of the church’s business, not to keep the church out of the state’s business. It seems every establishment has removed anything pertaining to God. So where does God belong? As an entrepreneur and a believer it is important to have a rela-tionship with God. Business owners deal with customers from all walks of life and backgrounds. We also have to deal with various personalities and attitudes from cus-tomers, business associates, vendors, etc. How we conduct ourselves in business can be a reflection of being in a Godly relationship. People would rather see “God” in us as opposed to hearing “God” from us.

Patience is definitely a characteristic a business owner has to possess and exercise dai- ly. In the holy bible, Proverbs 15:18 NIV A hot-tempered man stirs up dissension, but a patient man calms a quarrel. We love what we do. The love we have for our business should flow over to our customers, products, services, colleagues and business partners.

1 Corinthians 13:4–8a NIV Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil

but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

The creation of a business is from an idea, which I refer to as a seed. Who do you be- lieve planted that seed? I believe God gives us visions and dreams for our lives. It is our responsibility to water our seed. It takes wisdom to transition a business from a concept to fruition.

Proverbs 16:16 NIV How much better to get wisdom than gold, to choose under- standing rather than silver! Proverbs 12:18 NIV Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Proverbs 4:6-7 NIV Do not forsake wis-dom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. Wisdom is su-preme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.

Patience, love and wisdom will sustain any business owner if applied to their daily lives. Customers’ first impression is with us not the services or products we are offering them. Business is about relationship building and ultimately selling and buying. The question I was asked is “Does God belong in business?” If you are practicing his principles then God is already in your business. Entrepreneurship can be stressful. There is peace in knowing we can carry all our stressors to God if we choose to do so. This article is not to convert anyone to believe in God but to enlighten your mind.

As Entrepreneurs we are walking and working in our dream. A gift from God indeed!

Getting started with Google+ is just part of one strat-egy outlined in my special report on 5 Action Steps to Getting Your Website Found in Search. I promise to show you below where you can pick up this special re-port for free. Google is currently the largest search engine available. Whenever they are not implementing one of over 500 different algorithm changes a year, they are rolling out their own new products and programs. The latest one, Google+, should definitely be added to your search en-gine optimization and on-line marketing arsenal. Why should you spend time optimizing Google+? 1. Increase authority on-line 2. Increase on-line visibility 3. Increase click through rate from search results How do you optimize Google+?Step 1: Get a Google Gmail account. If you are not using Gmail you may not want to go and manage yet another email account. I can understand your pain with this. But from a simple logistical email management standpoint, Gmail rocks for me. There are ways to streamline and consolidate all of your email accounts and use one single Gmail account for everything. See RESOURCE #1 HERE (it’s a short video tutorial) http://darlingseo.info/webresources that ex-plains how you can use Gmail to manage your domain email accounts to make your life easier. A Gmail account will be necessary so that you can best use the Google+ network and organize all of your connections into cir-cles. For ALL Web Resources mentioned in this article, either scan this QR code or visit: http://DarlingSEO.info/we-bresources

Step 2: Set up your Google+ Personal Profile. Now that you have a Gmail account, set up your Goo-gle+ profile. Okay, I hear you… what about privacy? Face it; nothing is private with this new fangled Inter-net technology anymore. Either embrace it or continue busting your tail trying to be known for something you are good at while hiding under a rock. Now, I’m not recommending that you share your per-sonal day to day streaming thoughts of consciousness on here but you are going to have to put a human face and persona behind this Google+ profile. It starts with your name and it results in authority and authorship.Fill out your Google+ profile as completely as possible. Use keywords and phrases relevant to your business throughout the profile. Use big pictures and videos. Add important website URLs and descriptions. Drop in a dash of personality. The most important part of filling out your Google+ profile for you and your on-line business is adding your website to the Contributor section. This is a step in set-ting up Authorship. When you set up Authorship correctly it looks like this in search results:

Authorship does a couple of things: 1. It protects you as the original creator of the content.2. That little thumbnail image along with the rich snip-pet text increases your click through conversion from the search results to your website. It’s a process of connecting the dots between your website, your content, your image, and your Google+ profile. See WEB RESOURCE #2 (http://DarlingSEO.info/webresources ) for more details on how to set up Google Authorship on your Wordpress website.

Step 3: Set up a Google+ Business Page or a Google+ Local Places Page. The one you choose here is largely dependent upon your main goal. If your business and brand depends upon reaching your local customer and client to thrive, set up a Google+ Local Places Page. If connecting with your local client and customer is not something you care about, go ahead and set up a Goo-gle+ Business Page. Why not both? As of this writing, Google is still merg-ing existing Google+ business pages with Local Places pages. It is still a bit of a confusing situation so it’s probably best to wait it out a few more weeks to save you some time. The Google+ business page is the equivalent of the Facebook business page. A Facebook business page attracts likes while a Google+ page attracts “Plus 1’s”. Fill out the page completely using large images, videos, and keyword and topic rich textual content. Add the +1 button to your website: See WEB RESOURCE #3 (http://DarlingSEO.info/webresources) for instruc-tions. While you are on that page, scroll down and see how you can further customize and generate code for a more accurate +Snippet in search results. Hint: This will be especially valuable to local businesses.See WEB RESOURCE #4 (http://DarlingSEO.info/webre-sources )for adding the Google+ Follow Badge.

Once you go through these three steps, you will be in a much better position to grow your network and increase your on-line visibility. As your network and visibility grows, your authority on specific topics will increase. Linking up Google+ Authorship with your content on-line is incredibly powerful because when a searcher sees an image next to a search result, it tends to increase the click through rate from search results to your website.

When most people think of special events, weddings, birthdays and/or anniversary parties come to mind. However, small-business owners can incorporate hosting spe-cial events to promote their goods and services as part of their advertising strategy. Through the guidance of an event planner, entrepreneurs can learn how to effectively apply the following ways to expand their professional contacts and clientele base:

• Networking events – A guaranteed way to build an ever-expanding list of busi-ness-to-business contacts. This type of event generally takes place right after business hours and can lasts 2 hours or longer. Attendees are asked to bring business cards and talk to someone they don’t know.

• Open Houses - Invite current and future clients and business owners to see what makes your product or service different from the rest. This type of event can occur at your place of business and can be an all-day event or during scheduled time frames. This is a casual non-abrasive approach to get your ideal clients in the door!

• Client appreciation events – In short, customers help pay the bills. Obtaining returning clients weighs heavy on the type of customer service you provide. Today’s consumers are very savvy and are willing to spend their money on businesses that go the extra mile. You must not only tell, but show your customers how much you appreciate their business.

How to Market Your Small Business through Special Events By Tiffany Chalk

• Launch party - Create buzz about the new product or service you have to offer by giving guests a first look. This type of event should provide a brief information session about the product or service where guests can ask questions. Visuals and free product sampling should also be included. In this current economy, competition for customer retention is tighter than ever. With the proliferation of social media, businesses have been forced to come up with more creative ways to obtain and retain clients. By implementing these tips, small-business owners can build consumer loyalty while ultimately increasing their brand awareness.

GET REGISTEREDor Die Trying!

By Jeffrey T. Benson, Jr.

Many Americans have experienced loss of jobs, homes, ve-hicles and are looking for a personal bailout from the pow-ers that hold political office. We as Americans have a civic duty and responsibility to go out, get registered and vote!

The ability to vote exists as one of the most cherished Con-stitutional Rights that many fought, marched and died for over the centuries. Whether the excuse is apathy or laziness, voting has become a privilege that far too many Americans take for granted.

Remember that the winning President elect may have an enormous impact on our children’s future, not just the next four years but for the next 40 years. There have been many elections not just on a local level that have been won by less than 100 votes.

Without minimizing the importance of the Presiden-tial election, it is also important to vote in your state and local elections. Change starts at a grass roots lev-el whether you live in the suburbs or the inner city. All change starts by electing people to implement change, whether it is a Mayor or a President.

In order to register to Vote, a person must: • Be a United States citizen • Be 18 years old by December 31 of the year in which you file this form • Live at your present address at least 30 days before an election • Not be in jail or on parole for a felony conviction • Not claim the right to vote elsewhere

This election year marks a pivotal momentfor current American citizens and generations to come.

Why did you decide to go into law? I chose to pursue a career as a attorney because it was abundantly clear to me that the “law” benefits some and burdens others. I saw the legal field as an opportu-nity to assist the burdened while making a living at the same time. Put differently, I could do well while doing good. Moreover, I desired more professional autonomy. Meaning I wanted to be the conductor of my own sym-phony. As an associate of a bank with 100,000 plus em-ployees I felt like I was perpetually waiting in an endless line for the next upward bound opportunity.

What do you love most about your career?I love the practice of law because I am becoming a person that can “do some things.” Meaning, I am con-stantly learning the inner workings of the federal, state and local courts, agencies, administrations, etc. These institutions are where rights are conferred, powers are established, and justice is delivered. By navigating the terrain of these institutions strategically I can accom-plish things for good people who endeavor to seek jus-tice or better their lives in some fashion.

Jamie Shanklin, a seasoned entrepreneur, was ready to take her business to the next level. Her desire to increase her clientele and professional contacts lead her to local Chambers of Commerce. However, being a home-based business among corporate entities and powerful execu-tives did not facilitate her need to expand her network.Shanklin was not intimidated by big business. She found there were no resources specific to the needs of home-based business owners. Shanklin felt there should be a level playing field for home-based businesses when competing against their corporate counterparts. This commitment to professional fairness leads Shanklin to investigate various networking and business groups. There are 38 million home-based businesses in the USA. $427 billion per year is made by home-based business-es. 70% of Americans would prefer to be self-employed.These statistics, provided by Ted Nuyten on July 20, 2012, proves home-based business owners help stim-ulate our economy. They needed a voice. Shanklin, in April 2011, found what she’d been diligently searching for through, the Home-Based Business Chamber of Commerce.Beverly Anderson founded the National Home-Based Business Chamber of Commerce in Memphis, TN in 2008. The HBBCOC offered the leverage, resources and networking opportunities Shanklin’s entrepreneurial spirit preferred to excel in her business. The HBBCOC offers a wealth of benefits such as: • National exposure • Credibility through association

• Traffic catcher website linked to an existing website • Networking Opportunities • Member to member perksAnd so much more. Shanklin was ecstatic to join the HB-BCOC but there was a problem. The HBBCOC has several national chapters but none served the Delaware area. Anderson offered Shanklin the grand opportunity to establish a local chapter. Shanklin accepted and on May 21, 2011 she was introduced as President of the Delmar-va Home-Based Business Chamber of Commerce. The HBBCOC Delmarva Chapter serves Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia. Shanklin has been thriv-ing in her Presidency. She has a winning team of proven professionals which consists of: Vice President, Ira Spen-cer Jr. and Treasurer, Margaret Dixon. The HBBCOC Delmarva Chapter has been celebrating ex-plosive growth. They have hosted events and workshops to promote HBBCOC initiatives. Additionally, they’ve given home-based business owners a platform to share their vision and expertise in their fields. The HBBCOC Delmarva Chapter is a nonprofit organiza-tion. You can support our fundraising efforts by shop-ping online at shop.com/hbbc and sign up as a preferred customer. How their minds ciphers information is unique. Hearing phrases, seeing images, any-thing can trigger an idea. I experienced this on a hot evening in June 2009.

A colleague and I were being interviewed by a reporter for a local news station. We were having a conversation prior to the recording of the interview. When we advised her of the many projects we had collaborated on she asked, “What are you, business bff’s?”

My colleague and I looked at each other in a way only your bff (best friend forever) can understand because we knew a business had just been conceived from an idle phrase. My gracious colleague said, “You can have this one.”

It has taken almost three years but the delivery of Business BFF in January 2012 was a momentous occasion. I, as any proud parent would, gushes over my baby. I will help you understand why business owners need a bff in business.

The first question I usually get asked is, “What is Business BFF?” Business BFF is a sup-port system and liaison between small business owners, business professionals and our partner businesses. We create an environment where businesses can connect to the resources that will move their business to the next level. The concept for this group derived from the need to connect with someone of a like mind. Our spouses, family members and friends support us. However, if an idea awakes you in the middle of the night; who can you talk to? My husband at two o’clock in the morning does not want to hear about an idea. He wants to sleep.

Every entrepreneur has experienced the “light-bulb moment” in the quiet, stillness during the early hours of the morning. You want to jump, scream, yell it from the roof-top but everyone is asleep. You are on pins and needles until it is a decent hour to talk to someone. You are so excited, adrenaline is pumping, you are smiling so hard your back teeth are showing, and finally you blurt out your idea and nothing. The only response to your two o’clock in the morning epiphany is, “Oh, that’s great. Did you eat breakfast?”

are a special group of people. ENTREPRENEURS

Business BFF

You stand there as the imaginary piano comes out of the ceiling and falls onto your head. These are extreme times. When your creative juices are working overtime you need a bff in business. Your Business BFF will encourage and help push your vision; birthing a greater business. I understand the pessimism. The majority of entrepreneurs have exhausted the ones close to them. We rely on their support, be it emotional or financial, when starting this entrepreneurial adventure. We may have started and stopped a few times before pressing forward in our busi-ness. So we get the “here we go again” looks or “what are you trying now “statements. Entrepreneurs need to avoid these stumbling blocks and negative energy. I wanted to offer an understanding heart, a listening ear, an eye for detail, an honest critique, and a pat on the back for not giving up on your dream.

The best candidates for this group are business owners, business professionals, entre-preneurs who embrace these fundamentals: networking, collaborations, mentoring, partnerships, confidentiality, educating and community development. Entrepreneur-ship is hard work. We wear many hats. Sometimes we pour so much of ourselves into others; we need to be refilled and that is a great benefit to this group.

My expectations for Business BFF are limitless. My bff in business has supported, up-lifted, given her brutally honest opinion, and kicked me in the tush when I needed it. I have networked and partnered with group members. I expect this will be an explosive group and some of the best businesses coming forth will have benefited from our unique support system.

Business BFF is the dream group for anyone in business or thinking about starting a business. The sincere desire to help push another person into their destiny and giving them a platform to showcase their talents is rare. This group is not about competition. It is a brotherhood and sisterhood of elite professionals seeking to up-level their busi-nesses with integrity and class. If you would like more information about this group please visit www.businessbff.net or send emails to [email protected].

Facebook Marketing: How to Market Your Business Without Getting Blocked by Tracey Hausel

Facebook Marketing can be a wonderful way of getting leads. Unfortunately, the last few days have reminded me that a lot of people think they know how to market on Facebook. They don’t. First let’s look at Facebook Marketing etiquette.

Facebook Marketing Etiquette1) Always message people when you friend them. You may think they know you, but what if they have forgotten you. Also, if you are a guy, please say why you want to be friends. You wouldn’t believe the number of men that will friend married women and hit on them. So if a lady asks how you know them, don’t be offended. They are just tired of the jerks.

2) Always message people when you friend them. Yes, it’s that important.

3) Do not put your opportunity or affiliate links on someone else’s wall. Great way to tick someone off and have them block you.

4) Leave out links in your let’s be friend message. Great way to not get friended.

5) Remember Facebook is like a party. Would you like it if someone at a party walked up to you and told you to join their MLM? And if you would, don’t do it to someone else. It’s weird and you give MLM a bad name.

How To Do Facebook MarketingDevelop Relationships.

You know get to know people. If an opportunity presents itself, ask the person if they would like info. Don’t give them a link! It turns people off. Ask if they’d like one.

Help people out. If someone has a question you can answer, answer it.

Join Groups, but please don’t just put opportunity or affiliate links in them. Share content. When you just stick your link on a post, most people ignore it.

There are a ton more Facebook Marketing ideas in MLSP!Some of the above tips come from Jessica Higdon’s Facebook Marketing video inside of My Lead System Pro. She has more. So join MLSP for two weeks for around 10 bucks. Then, go to marketing strategies and then Facebook. Scroll down until you see a video by Jessica Peretti (her maiden name).

THE MAKING OF NO MORE DRAMA By Frank W. Gibbs II

When I was 11 years old, my mother lost her long battle with breast cancer. I faced adversity at a young age and learned to take a bitter situation and somehow make it sweet. I understand no matter how dire things may appear there is always light at the end of the tunnel.I grew up in the town of Georgetown in the state of Delaware. There was not much to do, especially if you were not active in sports or recreational activities. As a teen, I had to improvise and find things to do to keep my mind occupied. I began to write short stories and poetry from sheer boredom.I discovered and developed a passion for writing. I did not realize my idle writings would propel me into my destiny. Many years later, I am upstairs, sitting on my futon, with my laptop on a Saturday at 2 o’clock in the morning. I am putting the finishing touches on my first stage play. I have read, deleted and rephrased sentences numerous times. My strict traditional Pentecostal background did not limit the extremely transparent story line. The play showcases complex charters with serious issues and dilemmas. It was my desire to escape the limitations of tradition to widen spiritual parameters to reach people of various backgrounds and cultures. My plays are a collaboration of personal experiences, hardships and the emotional roller coaster trials can take you on. When creating this stage play, my own emotions almost got the best of me. There were so many excuses going through my mind. The support from my wife and daughter to not give up on my dream helped push me to my next level. The 1000 plus seats are filled , the audience cheers, the curtain goes up and I stand back stage basking in God’s grace watching the fruits of my labor. The debut of “No More Drama I” is a great success. Innovative, stimulating, creative, uplifting and emo-tional were some of the accolades the play received.Glory to God for He did not allow my doubts and fears to over take me. Frank Gibbs Entertainment’s first production was one of the most successful plays to tour the East Coast. It became very popular and encore presentations were requested. We had to take the play on the road visiting Atlanta, GA, Onley, VA, Salisbury, MD and Wilming- ton, DE.The Lord has truly enlarged my territory. In a few short years, I have been able to establish myself as a Playwright, Director, Producer and Entrepreneur. Frank Gibbs En- tertainment is a flourishing company with thousands of fans. I attribute a part of my success to staying true to my target audience.I was determined to tackle issues that most playwrights would consider too risky. We encounter so many different people over a lifetime and I wanted to help tell their sto- ry. It is not your beginning but your ending that matters.

I would like to take this opportunity to encourage you not to give up on your dreams. While you are working towards your dream obtain the knowledge to accomplish and properly execute your ultimate goals. A book that revolutionized my thinking is John Maxwell’s “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership.”This book helped me realize being a successful leader means you are willing, open and accepting of new ideas. Frederick Douglass, the late father of the civil rights move-ment, was famously quoted saying, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” Many people desire to progress but they are not willing to go through the struggle. Whenev-er you aspire to greatness, there will always be opposition to hinder you. The struggles are not to defeat you but to motivate, move and make you stronger. If I had a dime for every obstacle that was placed in my path, I would be able to pay off the national debt. The obstacles may have slowed me down but never deterred me from accomplishing my dreams. Ask yourself, “How bad do I want this?” Are you willing to do and go through anything?Once you decide in your heart and mind to push forward nothing will avert you from your mission. Your dream will come to pass and change your life forever. It has defi- nitely changed my life. For more information and upcoming productions visit www. frankgibbs.com.

Benefits of Exercise

Imagine sitting in your house alone all day with no ac- tivity and communication. How would you feel? Your dog cannot talk but his/her behaviors are an outward expression of their inner emotions.Solitude, boredom, anxiety, and most importantly the lack of exercise can cause your dog to exhibit fearful and aggressive behaviors. A well-exercised pet is not only physically fit but mentally fit as well.Exercise can help solve your pet’s behavior problems and lengthen his or her lifespan. You should give your dog at least three short walks per day, one of which should include more rigorous physical activity, like a game of fetch. There are benefits for you as well. A

healthier cardiovascular system, becoming physically fit, lowering your blood pressure, improving your mood and strengthening your bond with your dog are benefits associated with exercising with your dog. In addition, it can keep you motivated to exercise regularly because your dog will remind you to stay on your routine. When you get home from work take a short walk with your dog. This will relax you and help eliminate the stress of your work day. You may say, “I work long hours. I don’t have time. I just want to relax when I get home”. One solution to this dilemma is to hire a Certified Pro-fessional Pet Sitter. The CPPS can visit your home while, you are at work. The CPPS can give your dog the exercise

and attention they desire until you arrive home. In my professional opinion, when choosing a CPPS make sure the CPPS is insured, bonded, and trained in pet first aid and CPR. To find a pet sitter that meets these criteria you can use Pet Sitters International’s “locate a pet sitter” link at www.petsit.com.

Secrets to

PermanentWeight Loss

5 simple steps to success!

Page 21: The Business BFF Magazine

- 21 -

When it comes to weight loss the only real way to achieve permanent re-sults is to “Master Your Body by Resetting your Mind.” Let me help you un-derstand what I mean. There are more diets and exercise programs on the market than ever, not to mention countless weight loss products promising miraculous results. What I find interesting is that despite all of the resources available for weight loss, the number of people becoming over weight and obese continues to climb at an alarming rate. Do any of these scenarios sound familiar:

- “I just got off work, my boss is a jerk and I am so stressed out. I can’t wait to get home so I can relax and eat a bag of chips.”

- “It is late at night; I am so bored and lonely. I really don’t have anyone to talk to. I will just grab some ice cream and watch a movie.”

- “I was supposed to start my new diet today but I messed up this morning. I ate pancakes for breakfast. Oh well, since I already messed up I will just finish this strawberry cheesecake that is left over.”

- “I want to eat better but when I go out with my friends they will laugh and it would be awkward if I ordered a salad.”

I have experienced each and every one of these scenarios on my journey to the body I deserve. I did not realize my overeating was directly related to my emotions. During a typical day, I would wake up in the morning and unconsciously begin to think about all the food I wanted to consume during the day. I was out of control. The good news is there are some simple steps to gain freedom from this waistline busting habit.

Here are 5 steps to break free from emotional eating:

- Learn the Difference between Emotional and Physical Hunger:It is very simple. When you are experiencing physical hunger your stomach will begin to rumble. Anything else is emotional eating. One of the crys-tal clear ways that I’m able to identify emotional cravings is when I have a strong desire to eat a specific food. When that happens I know the empty void that I am attempting to fill is not in my stomach. Physical hunger is satisfied with any kind of food. It does not have to be a sandwich from my favorite deli with extra cheese and sauce with spicy jalapeño chips on the side.

- Stop and Think: Before you reach for a slice of chocolate cake after experiencing an uncom-fortable or difficult emotion like fear, stress, anxiety, or guilt, pause and remind yourself that it is not food that you really want. Food is never the answer to your problem. Overeating simply gives you an additional prob-lem and hinders you from fixing your initial problem.

Wait at least 15 minutes, write down your feelings in a journal if you can, and determine a solution that does not include food.

- Add Happiness and Subtract UnhappinessFocusing on happiness makes less time to focus on overeating. If it is pos-sible find a positive way to relieve emotional difficulty. For example, get rid of stress by exercising, get rid of the boyfriend who is always calling you names, organize your day better so you are not so overwhelmed, find a coach who can help you overcome your fear, etc. Also try to fill your life with activities that make you happy.

Make a list of 5 things you are passionate about. For example, Zumba, sing-ing in the choir, reading love novels, traveling, and shopping for bargains. Make sure that your happiness list does not include people. That makes it more likely that your sweet pleasures can’t be taken away.

- Use Peppermint to Smash Your Craving:According to psychologist Bryan Raudenbush, a professor at Wheeling Je-suit University in West Virginia, smelling peppermint reduces the urge to eat.His study showed volunteers who sniffed peppermint scent every two hours were not as hungry as people who did not sniff peppermint. Plus they ate 2,800 fewer calories in a week. That’s enough to lose nearly a pound.Raudenbush says, peppermint “distracts you from your hunger pains, and you don’t feel as inclined to eat as much.”A peppermint scented candle is best since the study showed eating pepper-mint candy or chewing peppermint gum did not work as well.

- Get Away from FoodMaking a decision to not eat an entire pizza is difficult when you have an entire pizza right in front of your face. Don’t keep unhealthy snacks and foods at home… you will eat them just because they are there. Also avoid buffets and eat a healthy meal at home before you go to your church picnic or family function.Equipped with these tools you will become a pro at defeating deceptive cravings and your waistline will thank you.

LIFE INSURANCE: What Your Agent Never Told You By Yolanda Fidderman

It never ceases to amaze me how people do not think about life insurance until a loved one is dying. Death is a part of life. It is best to face this head on and get your financial house in order. It is so sad to watch family members of loved ones who have passed away collect money from strangers to bury them. The major-ity of consumers buys life insurance and never looks at the policy again until a death. The agent may have fast talked you, sold you the policy and you wait to receive it through the mail.Let’s first discuss the purpose of life insurance. Life insurance is financial protec-tion. It is the foundation to your financial house. It is used for burial expenses but most importantly to replace the income of the loved one who has died. The prop-er coverage invested correctly can replace the monthly income of the deceased loved one. That money can be used to support the remaining family members. So, what is the best type of life insurance? There have been debates for years concerning whole life and term life insurance. Whole Life, also referred to as Cash Value, Variable and Universal Life Insurance, is suggested by most agents because it gives you the option to build savings within the policy. It also yields the highest commissions. Term Life Insurance of-fers the maximum amount of coverage for the least amount of money. There are different variations of term life insurance. You want a Guaranteed Level Term Life Insurance policy. The policy’s term, amount of coverage and the premium will all remain the same until it is time to renew the policy. Below are life insurance scenarios.Example: You have a $50,000 whole life policy with a $6000 cash value. What will the beneficiary receive when you die? You are thinking both, right? Wrong! You will only receive the death benefit of $50,000 and the company will keep your cash. Now let’s say you borrowed $5000.00 of cash value and die before you can pay it back. The company will take $5000.00 plus interest from the death benefit of $50,000 and your family will receive the remaining $45,000 or less.Whose money is it? Yours, right? So who benefits from you getting a Whole Life policy? It sure is not your family who is grieving your loss. These insurance com-panies are getting richer off of the deaths of their whole life policy holders. The customer may reach a point in their policy where it is referred to as Paid-Up.Paid-Up means a customer no longer pays the premium for their life insurance policy. What the agent does not disclose is the cash value that is in the policy is feeding the premium. Repeat that. The monthly premium is debited from the cash value in the policy. When the cash runs out you have no life insurance. Now let’s discuss term. Term Life Insurance is a lot cheaper, you get the most coverage for less money and you can choose the term length. For example: When you are young, married, have small children, mortgage, etc. you need more cov-erage because your debt to income ratio is at its highest. As you get older, the mortgage gets paid-off; children are grown, less debt, so there’s not a need for a great amount of coverage. A great agent would have advised you to start saving for the future. If you have been saving for retirement when you reach the end of your term, your savings can replace the need for life insurance. If you were unable to save and have term life insurance you may obtain coverage but it will be at your current age. When reviewing the pros and cons of life insur-ance make sure you have all the facts to make the most informed choice for your family. The average commission on a cash value policy is a few thousand dollars compared to term polices which is a few hundred or less. So is the agent selling you what’s best for your family or what’s best for theirs’?

What You Need 1/2 cup sugar 1 8oz. cream cheese 3 tablespoons of sugar 2 cups of salted thin pretzel 1 stick of butter 1 12oz cool whip 20 oz. blueberries (prefer frozen mostly thawed) 2 3.4oz. boxes of berry blue jello 2 cups of boiling water

What to DoPreheat oven to 350 degrees. In a bowl, use your hands to roughly crush pretzels. Separate the pretzels from the crumbs. Toss pretzels with the stick of melted butter and the 3 tablespoons of sugar. Spread mixture evenly into a 13X9 inch pan. When finished place the pan into the oven for 10 minutes. Remove pan and let pretzel cool. In another bowl mix soften cream cheese and sugar. Add cool whip to sugar and cream cheese. Blend all ingredients but do not over mix. Over mixing will cause mixture to be runny. Place mixture in the refrigerator until the pretzels cool.

Once pretzels are cool to touch spread the cream cheese, cool whip and sugar mixture over them evenly. Make sure mixture is spread into corners as well. This will help prevent air bubbles and jello accidentally going to the bottom of the pan. Pour the two boxes of jello into a large bowl. Add boiling water and stir until all the dry mix has been dis-solved. Then add the 2 cups of blueberries. Make sure the berries are incorporated into the jello.

Take a very large spoon and gingerly spoon the jello and blueberry mixture onto the cream cheese mixture. This takes a gentle hand. If you dump the mixture on top of the cream cheese mixture it will separate. You will have clumps in the jello. That’s not what you want. After you have spooned all the jello mixture on top of the cream cheese mixture it needs to be refrigerated for at least two hours. Once completely chilled you can enjoy this delicious dessert.
