opera warwick: alice in wonderland wk 2Opera Warwick are proud to present a devised opera based on the story of Alice in Wonderland, featuring music from Mozart to Sondheim and Verdi to Jefferson Airplane. The event takes place in Leamington and London over the weekend of Week 2, with performance details as follows:

3 ○ rd and 4th May: St. Mary’s Church | Leamington | 7:30pm

5 ○ th May: St. Paul’s Church | Covent Garden, London | 7:30pm

For more information about the production and to buy tickets, please visit www.alicetheopera.co.uk

Here we go again! Another term, another election…

Hope everyone had a fantastic Easter break, and that you weren’t all too busy revising and essay-writing. As Term 3 dawns, watch out for tickets going on sale to the fantastic summer events, join us in celebrating The Dirty Duck’s third birthday and devote your procrastination time to Warwick SU (oh, and revise too!). There are plenty of specials coming up in your favourite outlets, from brain boosters to summer menus and the exciting launch of Bread Oven baguette deliveries outside the Library from Week 4.

As you’ve no doubt heard by now, we’re having to run another election for the position of Welfare & Campaigns Sabbatical Officer in Week 2. In every election we run we need to achieve a quorum figure (a minimum number of votes for the election to be valid) – if we don’t make it to the magic number, we could well be doing this all over again (again…)

So, please make sure that you vote in Term 3 – your Union needs you!

intro • news in brief • opera warwick: alice in wonderland

news in briefvarsity 2012We won again, of course - standard. Congratulations to all our sporting lads and lasses for dishing out yet another roundly-deserved thrashing! We trust Cov will be back for more next year… they just never seem to learn, do they?

warwick jailbreak week 2Warwick Jailbreak returns in Term 3, this year running a ‘Race 2 Amsterdam’ in which participants have to get as far away from campus as they can using only their wits and blagging skills! Break Out for this term’s charity hitch-hike will take place on 5th May, which is the Bank Holiday Weekend of Week 2. Sign-up has now closed, but you can still get involved by supporting the various participants online - search for ‘Warwick Jailbreak’ on Facebook or visit www.warwickjailbreak.com!

summer leagues The Ernst & Young Summer Leagues are a great way to keep fit over the summer term and maintain some semblance of sanity whilst revising!

This term we are offering Cricket, Rounders, Floorball and Touch Rugby, and we welcome all participants – why not get a group of hall-mates, society friends or course-mates together and play in these recreational leagues? The new offerings this year are:

TOUCH RUGBY ○The Touch Rugby Tournament will be fast and exciting, with 15-minute halves. Games will take place on Sunday afternoons at the Tarkett Pitch - teams can be mixed, and all are welcome to participate. The matches are also supported by the RFU.

FLOORBALL ○Floorball is a sport with its roots in Ice Hockey. Played in the main hall on Thursday afternoons, matches will be comprised of two halves, each 7 minutes, with 2-minute intervals between halves. You only need a minimum of 4 players, and it’s great for a quick midweek

revision break!

Please visit www.warwicksport.warwick.ac.uk/leagues to sign your teams up – the deadline for submissions is Friday 27th April for all leagues!

WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?As previously reported, following an incredibly difficult decision, our Welfare & Campaigns Officer Elect decided not to take up his position in favour of a dream job offer. While we do of course wish him all the best, in the interests of fairness for both the student body and the eventual post-holder, we are now holding a new election for the position.

Remember that famous scene in The Godfather Part III where Michael Corleone, wearing a fairly risible red cardigan, laments: “Just when I thought I was out - they pull me back in”…? (We won’t hold it against you if you don’t, as that would involve actually sitting through The Godfather Part III – it’s on Youtube though if you want to watch the clip). That, my friends, was what Democracy Officer Chris Luck looked like a few weeks ago when he realised he’d have to try and get out the vote again (minus the red cardigan). We quite enjoyed it, if we’re being honest.

HOW TO GET INVOLVEDSo! In the name of student accountability (remember, the Sabb team are elected by you and work for you) – not to mention poor Chris’s sanity - we’re inviting you to do your democratic duty once more and cast your vote in the rescheduled Welfare & Campaigns Officer election, which will take place in Week 2 of this term.

Don’t forget that nominations are still open until Wednesday of Week 1 if you’d like to throw your hat into the ring and run as a candidate!
