picture what $1 million can do for bu students. now double it.

Boston University trustee and alumnus Richard Cohen has challenged the BU community to join together to raise $2 million in three months—money that will bolster BU’s schools, colleges, programs, and faculty, and help give outstanding students access to a BU education.

Through the challenge, Cohen will match up to $1 million in new and increased gifts to the Annual Fund with equal gifts to financial aid.

Supporting education for young people is “putting something back into society,” says Cohen. “Education shouldn’t be confined to those students who have the economic means. It’s critical that it be spread.”

Because, says Cohen, the whole point of giving is to make a difference. And the Cohen Challenge is your chance to make twice the difference with one gift.

    how the challenge works

  • With the help of donations to the Engineering Annual Fund, the BU chapter of Engineers Without Borders sends undergraduate students to Chirimoto, Peru, to figure out how to renovate the aged pipes and failing filters that contribute to the village’s 100 percent parasitic infection rate. The group is developing a filtration system that will provide clean water to inhabitants.

Doing this important work means paying for travel and for the sophisticated equipment used to research the current water-delivery systems. That’s where the Annual Fund steps in.

The project benefits all involved, Peruvian or Bostonian. “This was more than a great educational experience,” says Richard Burriola (ENG’10). “I learned things that I could never learn in a classroom.”

As newsroom budgets are cut across the country and crucial investigative journalism is threatened, the NECIR at BU’s College of Communication continues to dig deeper into local and regional issues. The first nonprofit, university-based inves- tigative reporting collaborative in the country, the group gives committed students the resources they need to fill the role of public watchdog.

Thanks in part to COM Annual Fund support, the NECIR has been able to investigate lax sanctions for campus sexual assaults and conduct a “Taxpayer Watch” series, focusing on where federal stimulus money is going in Massachusetts. Annual Fund dollars help pay fees necessary for obtaining government documents, transportation for student and faculty reporters, and more.

the annual fund: immediate-impact givingGifts to Boston University’s Annual Fund touch every corner of the Uni-versity. Annual Fund resources help deans, administrators, and coaches put new initiatives in motion. And they help build momentum for already established programs—from the nitty-gritty, like operations and mainte-nance, to the big ideas, like research centers and sustainability efforts, to the always-important financial aid and student-life programming.

Annual Fund giving allows BU’s leadership to put funds where they’re needed, when students and faculty need them.

In addition to scholarships, the Annual Fund supports:

    •Undergraduate research •Libraries •Athletics •Faculty development •BU’s 17 schools and colleges
