The 2017 BSA National Rally was held in Cowra NSW on 13-15 October. This was the13th National, a year early for NSW to allow Victoria to host the National andInternational Rally at Halls Gap next year. Although the numbers were down onprevious years with 81 riders and guests registered, possibly affected by industrialclosures in South Australia, the venue was excellent at the Cowra Holiday Park, withplenty of room for camping, good cabins and extensive areas for a concours, tradedisplays and convivial meetings. The local weather was warm and sunny, with thedistrict blanketed by harvested and bright yellow unharvested canola crops.

Runs to Canowindra, visiting the Age of Fishes Museum, the Cowra POW camp siteand Japanese Gardens and out to Wyangala Dam and Fossil Reefs were popular, withthe Wyangala Dam run so appreciated it was repeated for the Sunday morning Run.The welcome from the local community was overwhelming with lunch and dinnerspreads provided by the CWA, Salvation Army and the Woodstock School P&C beingexcellent. Country baked cakes – drool!

This year saw a heavy contingent of post-war BSAs, fewer pre-war but lots of A10s,A65s and triples. Best in show, in a fierce competition, was won by Paul Madden fromACT with a stunning black and chrome A75. Highlights were Michael Smith’s A10Spitfire Scrambler, Paul Abdilla’s multi-award-winning Lightning and Shane Phelps’1927 L27 350 flat tank, complete with carbide lamp, footboards and hand throttle infine barn-find condition.

As BSA was an eclectic collector of smaller brands such as Sunbeam (rumoured tohave been acquired for their paint formulae), Ariel and New Hudson, it was great tosee not one but two well-restored Sunbeams, an S7 and an S8, in different shades ofthe Sunbeam green. Phillip White managed to create a small stir in the camp, arrivingin flying cap, goggles, lace-up flying boots and a collar and tie on his S7. A“Gentleman’s Express” indeed. Jeeves, the spanner please!

Due to the swap with Victoria, NSW’s next-hosted BSA National Rally will be in 2022,up the north coast in Walcha.

And one that might make it...

BSA LadybirdIn the late 1950s, BSA introduced theirlast 3-wheeler; the Ladybird. This was aprototype and never reached massproduction. The first prototype had ahand-made steel body and waspowered by an engine at the rear ofthe vehicle. The car was very basic anddid not feature items such as sparewheel, traffic indicators or awindscreen wiper.

One that got away...

Concept by a European designer beingpromoted to Mahindra for a 2019release. A re-boot of a 350 single.
