Message to MembersWith the North Dakota and Minnesota legislative sessions kicking off last month, our role as the representative of our more than 2,100 members in the public policy arena has never been more important. We anticipate taking an active role in advocating for the legislation that will be more beneficial to our members and their 94,000 employees.
In Greater Minnesota, our small business and community leaders are proving unparalleled strength and resiliency as the business climate continues to evolve. I am looking forward to another session of tax relief and the rollback of undue regulatory burdens on a variety of fronts. Whenever possible, The Chamber is committed to mitigating policies that unfairly impact border city communities and will advocate for expanded exemptions.
North Dakota is facing challenges and opportunities in every direction. Top priorities for our region include addressing significant workforce shortages and ensuring progress continues on flood protection projects. While the majority of our members are located in the eastern part of the state, our support is certainly with the communities in the west. The Chamber is ready to look beyond the “wants” of the metro until the immediate “needs” of our neighbors are addressed.
We will continue to look for opportunities to strengthen the environment in which we live and do business. After a long, slow slog of a recovery, the U.S. economy may be finally hitting its stride. Given the hurdles the economy faces in 2015, including federal policies and overseas development, can it keep its stride? U.S. Chamber of Commerce Deputy Chief Economist J.D. Foster (left) will discuss what to expect in the coming year.
After Foster’s keynote address, NDSU President Dean Bresciani (middle) will offer his perspective on higher education institutions as economic engines. He will share how higher education can feed positive perceptions of our region, broaden our economic base and attract and retain young people. Bresciani has a Ph.D. in higher education-finance with a doctoral minor in economics.
Finally, Dan Staller (right) from Starion Financial will present the results of the annual economic outlook survey, a partnership between Starion, NDSU’s Department of Management and Marketing and The Chamber.

Mayors Highlight Opportunities and Challenges in Growing Metro
Growing is good, and many responsibilities accompany prosperity.
That was the message the four metro mayors reiterated during the annual State of the Cities address. More than 550 people heard as the leaders described what happened in their community last year as well as the issues the city faces in the coming year.
All four mayors highlighted the incredible growth their respective city has seen recently. In Dilworth, where 75 vacant lots used to sit, only seven remain, Mayor Chad Olson said. In 2014, Moorhead construction permit values exceeded $100 million, a 10% increase from the previous year, Mayor Del Rae Williams explained. Fargo continues to see job growth, with 5,500 new jobs created last year,
Mayor Tim Mahoney cited. In West Fargo, 500 new students enrolled in the public school system, West Fargo Mayor Rich Mattern noted.
Each mayor also detailed the challenges they are tackling in 2015. Dilworth continues to invest in quality public services that will provide safety, security and recreation for its increasing population, while Moorhead is studying the issue of expanding its airport again. Fargo is seeking a water supply project that will prepare the community in the event of a water shortage, while West Fargo is evaluating all the possibilities for a new water source.

Audience members also had the chance to weigh in on important issues facing the metro. More than 200 people responded, with workforce edging out comprehensive flood protection by 4%. Seventy-eight percent of the audience also felt a convention center would add more to the community than a performing arts center, while 90% of 181 respondents felt that partnerships with another city should be evaluated whenever possible, versus maintaining complete autonomy.
Emcees Mark Nisbet from Xcel Energy and Joel Heitkamp from KFGO-AM Mighty 790 gathered the texted or tweeted questions, which revolved around parking issues, border city regulations, ways to attract millennials as well as older individuals to the metro, special assessments and more.

Peterson to Lead Chamber Advocacy Efforts
Last month, Elly Peterson was promoted to Government Affairs and Advocacy Coordinator. She has worked for The Chamber since January 2013, first as the public affairs intern and most recently as program coordinator for the Young Professionals Network. Peterson earned a bachelor’s degree in health communications
with a minor in public relations from North Dakota State University. Peterson will also co-manage the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!).

Lt. Gov. Wrigley Highlights Budget Priorities
Just one day before North Dakota’s Legislature convened, Lt. Gov. Drew Wrigley offered a candid explanation of what the governor’s priorities are when it comes to the state’s budget during the inaugural Eggs & Issues forum. More than 100 people listened as Wrigley described the “structural balance and structural surplus” components of the budget, including $408 million in tax relief, a reconfiguration of the
gross oil production tax, funding for western North Dakota communities and airports as well as water supply project funds.

Generational Marketing: How Age Impacts Your ApproachArticle by Jodi Duncan, President of Flint Communications, Inc.
When you are planning your marketing efforts are you thinking about how to profile your audience by attitudes and behaviors? Have you thought about where, when and how to reach them? Is there a way to look at how each generation consumes media and influences their purchasing decisions? How can you alter strategies to align with attributes of different generations? Should you do that? How do you do that? What emerging technologies can help you leverage generational insights to get more out of your marketing dollars?
Think about this: § Baby Boomers make smartphones a priority and are the leading users of online dating. Boomers are expected to retire en masse in 2015.
§ Gen Xers research products in excess before making a purchase using Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Twitter, Yelp, Amazon.com, Angie’s List, Epinions, CNET as part of research tools seeking reviews. They have a strong mistrust in the government and corporate America.
§ Gen Y distrusts traditional advertising and boast $200 billion a year in spending power. They also enjoy trends like backpacking internationally and purchasing the latest tech gadgets.
Do you see how this information can be valuable? Knowing your customer is key to creating good and effective marketing. Because we know Baby Boomers are attached to their smartphones, we can determine how and when to incorporate a mobile campaign. And as importantly, we can generate messages that cater to different audiences. You can and should leverage as much information as you can glean from your own database and use that information to your advantage. Many companies don’t. Many companies simply don’t know where to start!
If marketing is about engaging with your customers on an emotional level, the better you define that, the better job you can do. Use generational marketing as a foundation for your audience profiles. It’s a great place to start with information you know or can find through a little research. Then take those profiles and build on them with data you have from your own customer information and input. Once you’ve effectively profiled your audiences, you can start to determine key messages and what channels will be the most logical and cost –effective ways to reach them. Data is the key to improving marketing accuracy and effectiveness. Compiling all of this information PRIOR to launching your campaign is the most impactful but it is much easier said than done!

Nominate Students For Young Entrepreneur’s AcademyWe are looking for energetic students interested in starting their OWN real company! No need to have a business in mind; developing an idea is part of the fun with the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!).
YEA! is a nine-month program that teaches middle and high school students how to start and run their own businesses. As business leaders, you are encouraged to nominate creative, motivated students who pursue their goals with tenacity. Nominated students should have a strong work ethic and should demonstrate high levels of effort on a consistent basis.
A limited number of scholarships are available. Please be aware that the nomination of a student does not guarantee a scholarship. Nominated students will receive additional information about the Young Entrepreneurs Academy and a personal invitation to the YEA! informational session. All are welcome to apply and attend the informational sessions.

Student Success StoryConner Christian was only 13 years old when he started the YEA! program, through which he created the Rubber Boot Buddy. This metal device attaches to the bed of any truck and holds a pair of boots in place.

Leadership Fargo Moorhead West FargoLeadership Class Learns About Economic
Development, City PlanningFourth fastest-growing metro in the country. One of the best small cities for business and careers. Number two best metro in the nation. Best performing small city in the country.
Those are just a few of the lists the FMWF metro has made over the past 12 months. It’s no doubt the metro is doing something right in terms of economic development and city planning, so it was important for the Leadership class to have an opportunity to hear how it all comes together.
The day started off at the annual State of the Cities address where the class heard from the mayors of Fargo, Moorhead, West Fargo and Dilworth. The class also had the opportunity to meet with the mayors in a more informal setting where they got to ask questions ranging in topics from leadership styles to getting involved in local government to the impacts of infrastructure.
To help the class understand how leaders plan for the future of our region, Jodi Bruns, North Dakota State University Extension Services, had the class participate in The Futures Game. This interactive game based upon different scenarios, provided an opportunity to make important decisions about their hypothetical communities over the course of 20 years. Seeing how one choice made 10 years ago can affect everything from the economy to job growth was an eye-opening experience.
The day concluded with the class discovering how the Bakken Oil Reserves and lignite-generated energy are impacting business located in Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo. Along with Community Builders and members of The Chamber’s Board of Directors, the class received a crash course in the production of coal and oil in western North Dakota, followed by a panel discussion focused on how the energy boom is affecting local businesses in a major way.
Members from the Lignite Energy Council, Bakken Backers, TrueNorth Steel and Ulteig shared firsthand knowledge and experiences on how the region is benefiting.

Gust Promoted to New Position Last month, Samantha Gust promoted to Professional Development Coordinator after serving as program coordinator for Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo since April 2014. She will now be responsible for the leadership program as well as the Young Professionals Network. She earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology with a minor in psychology from the University of North Dakota. She previously worked for the Community Violence Intervention Center in Grand Forks as the community and evaluation specialist. Gust will also co-manage the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!).

The Military Affairs committee is excited to help WDAY organize more Honor Flights for area veterans by supporting its Adopt a Vet Project. Schools, service clubs, businesses and individuals are invited to either directly donate to or run a specific fundraiser that will generate dollars for an Honor Flight. Fundraising Coordinator Lance Akers explained to the committee that the next Honor Flights will focus on the Korean and Vietnam War veterans.
The project has two objectives: 1. Raise money for another Honor Flight. 2. Help spread the fundraising effort throughout the communities from which veterans have applied.
Donations or funds in the amount of $750 are needed to adopt a veteran. Fundraising information can be provided to the project so sponsors can help promote the effort. Any sponsoring organization or individual may donate “In honor of” or “In memory of,” which will be incorporated into the Adopt a Vet list of participants online.
“The Chamber, its Military Affairs committee and the Honor Star Program is looking forward to supporting this effort because we believe it is so important for our veterans to see memorials built in their honor,” said Chamber President and CEO Craig Whitney.

How long have you been involved with the committee and program? I have been involved with the Ambassador program since 2010, and I love it!
What have you enjoyed most about working with the public relations ambassadors? One of the most enjoyable things is the group of individuals that we have on our committee and the commitment they all make to the program. One of the highlights for us as a whole is getting to meet the leaders responsible for our growing business community as well as the fun aspect of getting to celebrate the major milestones for all of the successful businesses in our community.

Razor Tracking: Using GPS Technology to Increase Efficiency
Razor Tracking is a web-based GPS tracking system that allows companies to track vehicles and assets.
The system is intuitive and simple, using a visual map to show customers where any one of their vehicles is with up-to-date location information.
Customers use the system for a variety of tasks including increasing distribution efficiency, vehicle maintenance and mileage tracking. Ag cooperatives are a great example of distribution efficiency.
One customer said if two of their trucks, used to refill sprayers, passes on the road, they’ve failed at their job. Using Razor Tracking, they can easily see where each vehicle is located and which one is the most accessible for a specific piece of equipment. It’s made them so efficient, they can even see a vehicle is on its way to refill and create the specialized mix for the specific friend they are working before they even arrive at the filling location, saving valuable downtown.
“All of the features are created based on customer needs and feedback,” said Brady Roehl, sales manager for Razor Tracking. The maintained feature, which can keep track of things like oil changes, was created after a customer asked for it, saying one of their trucks had accidentally gone a year without an oil change.
Another of Roehl’s customers said they save 20-30 hours per quarter just by using the mileage tracker. Their trucking company works across multiple states and they used to have to calculate the specific mileage for each for accounting records; now, Razor Tracking keeps track of it all.
The system is also simple to use. “If you were a new employee for one of my clients,” Brady said. “I could train you on the system in four minutes.”
Not only is it intuitive but it’s highly visual, using maps to show tracking data instead of being completely report-based.
Roehl explained that in the maintenance panel, vehicles that are close to or over their mileage for a specific metric show a red bar where vehicles that are up to date show blue progress bars. He also said vehicles with the most need for maintenance are listed at the top so they can be easily seen.
When a customer brings a new need or concern to Razor Tracking that could be solved in the system and would fit well with their vision, the company works with them to create and develop a solution.

Fargo Named One of Best Places to Retire
Fargo recently landed on the top 10 list of best places to retire in North Dakota. SmartAsset, an online financial information resource, gathered data on three separate regional factors that affect the quality of life for retirees.
Fargo landed at number nine on the list, with Devils Lake earning the top spot.
State and local tax rates were scrutinized, particularly income and sales. SmartAsset calculated effective rates based on a typical retiree, earning $35,000 annually (from retirement savings, social security or part-time employment), and spending their disposable income on taxable goods. The number of doctors’ offices, recreation centers and retirement centers per thousand residents in each area was examined, as well as the number of seniors in each area as a percentage of the total population.
Using these three factors, each county and city was ranked, with a calculated average for each area. The areas with the lowest average ranking are the best places to retire.

Are you happy at work? If you answered “no,” you are not alone. A survey conducted by the Conference Board revealed that “only 45% of workers are happy at their jobs.” Given how much time we spend at work, I think it’s worth taking the time to consider how we can increase our happiness.
§ Pay attention to your thoughts. We can make ourselves happy or unhappy just by the thoughts we think. When you get up in the morning what are you telling yourself about your day, your job or your family? Become more aware of the self-talk going on inside your head and shift the focus to things you can be grateful for, or try to see things from another perspective. When you do this, you will be adding happiness to your life instead of subtracting from it.
§ Take five every day. Each day take five minutes to lessen your stress by going for a short walk, reading a chapter from an inspirational book, listening to an uplifting song, talking to a positive person, finding a way to laugh. By taking time for yourself you are better able to maintain your joy and give to others.
§ Spread kindness. Be on the lookout for people doing things right at work, and say “thank you!” Also ask how you can help others at work. Showing appreciation and lending a hand to your co-workers can strengthen your relationship and also improve how others see you.
§ Make your space more awesome. Gretchen Rubin, the author of The Happiness Project, encourages us to think about “how we could make our work space more pleasant.” Invest in a cool lamp or buy some motivational signs to hang up, etc. Create a space that inspires you to do your best at work.
§ Use your superpowers. Perform actions each day that make you feel energized and optimistic. Everyone has superpowers which are the activities where passion, results, and focus come together. Leverage your strengths as much as possible and watch your happiness soar as well.
§ Happiness is different for everyone, so your responsibility is to find out what makes you happy and then begin to incorporate more of those activities each day at work. When you do, you will realize that you can work happy now!
