From the Desk of Our Pastor “NOW MINISTRY MODEL”

Bethany exists for a God given and Holy Spirit inspired purpose. We are loving God by loving others into a discipleship of Jesus Christ.

To accomplish this we take our ministries from God’s Word. “Go make disciples of all people…” Matthew 28:19-20 Luke 4:18-19, preach the Gospel, release the captive, recover the sight of the blind, let the opressed go free, and

proclaim the Lord’s forgiveness. Acts 1:8, witness to the ends of the earth. Acts 2:42-47, keep the sacraments and celebrate life together. Together these Words from God help us to embrace all that Bethany does to fulfill her call:

- Nuture-practicing regularly the disciplines of Christian living, supported by the Christian community and empowered by the Holy Spirit.

- Outreach-approaching all experiences of life as opportunities for faithful discipleship and service. - Witness-committing their lives to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

To keep discipleship primary, Bethany has adopted a new model for organizing her ministries. This new model focuses our energy on ministry, so our resources are marshalled towards what

God is doing through our ministries right NOW. N.O.W. stands for Nuture, Outreach, and Witness

Nuture Ministries give attention to the needs of the congregation, including education, worship, Christian formation, FAN, children, youth, adult, and stewardship. These are the ministries that happen outside our walls.

Outreach Ministries give attention to the local and larger community through ministries of compassion,

justice, and advocacy, what we do for those who don’t come to our Church, such as Epworth, Native American Ministry, Disaster Coordinator, and James Island Outreach. These are the ministries that happen outside our walls.

Witness Ministries focuses on how we celebrate and share our faith in word and deed, with evangelistic

outreach and faith stories, communications, lay speaking , assimilation and membership. These are the ministries that invite outsiders in and help us to celebrate our faith.

Supporting Ministries exist to organize our facilities, finances, and personnel around what God is doing

NOW. Ministry leads at Ministry Council! October 6th at 1:00 pm we will have Charge Conference and celebrate with our District Superintendent Rev. Dr. Sandra Stevena-Poirel all that God has accomplished this past year and all that God will do this next year as we each find our place to minister.

CHARGE CONFERENCE Our annual Charge Conference will be on Sunday, October 6th, at 1:00 p.m. If you are on the Council there will be lunch in the Fellowship Hall for those on the Council. This is the annual meeting of the church led by our District Superintendent. All members are welcome however only members of the Administrative Council may vote. Even though only members of the council can vote we encourage you to come and hear what your church has done this past year and where we look to go in 2020. BETHANY PUMPKIN PATCH 2019

Everyone get ready!!! The pumpkins are coming! Gear up for our Pumpkin Patch again this year. An entire truck-load of 3,000 pumpkins will be arriving at the church on Saturday, October 5th, at 10:00 am. The JICHS football team will help us unload once again. We also need as many Bethany volunteers as possible to help with the unloading. The more volunteers, the faster we can get done. There’s something to do for all ages; from unloading to sorting mini-pumpkins on pallets to providing support. Breakfast will be served at 9:00 prior to unloading.

The Pumpkin Patch will be open every day from October 5th through the 31st, during the hours of 11:00 am-7:00 pm.

We also need volunteers to work the daily shifts. Shifts each day are from 11:00 am-2:00 pm, 2:00 pm-5:00 pm and 5:00 pm-7:00 pm. Sign-ups have begun and will continue through October. It takes everyone giving a little of their time to make this event a success! This is our largest fundraiser of the year to raise money for Bethany’s programs and missions. Thank you for the support of Bethany and for helping with this outreach service to the community! Thanks, Julie BLOOD CONNECTION The Blood Connection Blood Mobile will be in the Bethany parking lot on Wednesday, October 23rd, 2:00 – 6:00 pm. Please consider donating the gift of life to help others. COMING SOON! White Elephant Bingo and garage Sale coming in January. Time to declutter and send your old treasures to a new home. This was such a fun event last year and over $2,500.00 was made to help repair our Friendship Hall. Plans to help with completing kitchen and appliances this year! Help us with your prayers, presence and donations. UPPER ROOM The church will no longer be getting the Upper Room books. If you would like to get your own subscription you may contact them at www.UpperRoom.org

ARK IN THE PARK “Ark in the Park” will be Saturday, October 19th from 11:00 am-1:00 pm, in the Bethany Pumpkin Patch. There will be a Blessing of the Animals at 11 and from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm we will be distributing Paws for Bethany treat bags. A pet photo booth will be open during this time as well and will remain for the duration of the pumpkin patch. REV. KAYLA HARWARD Rev. Kayla will be preaching at Bethany on October 13th! Make every effort to come see Kayla that day. COMMITMENT SUNDAY Commitment Sunday is October 27th. We ask that you prayerfully consider your pledge of financial support for Bethany’s many ministries in 2020. Brenda Blankenship will be sharing with us October 27th through music and testimony about God’s spiritual gifting through the seasons of life. God has been generous with us, adding to both our ministries and facilities. New people are finding their home here and engaging in discipleship. God is calling and gifting many for new ministry and existing ministry done in new ways. We are blessed with spiritual wealth! So embrace this opportunity to be part of all that God is doing in and through Bethany UMC! YOUNG LIFE Young Life is an outreach to High School aged people, mostly unchurched and hearing the Gospel for the first time. Young Life meets at Bethany’s Friendship Center on Monday nights at 7:00 pm. They have around 70-80 youth attending. Please pray for the leaders of Young Life as they enter into kid’s lives and deal with some intense stuff. Pray that God will pierce their hearts dulled by the culture, that the Spirit will light a fire in them that can only be sated by surrender to God’s will, and that Jesus Christ will become their constant Friend and Brother through life.
