What is a Freight Advisory Committee (FAC)
• A Freight Advisory Committee (FAC) a group of different freight stakeholders and serves as a forum in which freight issues and potential solutions are discussed
• Requires coordination and trust among multiple stakeholders
• Can be created for multiple levels of government:
• Nation-wide
• State
• Regional
• County
• City
Why are FACs Important
• Freight movements effect everyone, both directly and indirectly• For example, in Southeast Florida, freight:
• Supports 278,000 jobs; avg. salary of $69K
• Represents a $55 billion dollar impact on Southeast Florida’s economy
• One truck gross weigh = 40K lbs (empty) to 60,000 lbs (full)
• Truck movements impact roadways structural integrity and safety
• FACs can help provide valuable input on freight issues
• Forms connections between multiple stakeholders to strengthen the supply chain and supporting communities
• Helps to educate elected officials (e.g. MPO Board) so they can better understand the freight opportunities and challenges within their municipalities
Why are FACs Important (continued)
• Empowers governments to implement novel solutions that help to solve freight issues and meet organizational goals. For example:
• Provides MPOs with insight that helps to promote and develop a functional and efficient regional freight system;
• Provides industry input regarding goods movement issues with the freight network (e.g. freight listening session scheduled for October 2018); and
• Integrates freight considerations into all MPO projects and plans.

The Broward MPO’s Freight Transportation Advisory Committee (FTAC)
• The FTAC:
• Was formed in January 2017 as an outcome of the Broward MPO’s Strategic Business Plan.
• Is an advisory committee that provides the MPO with industry insight on topics related to freight mobility and its impact on the region’s economic competitiveness.
• Creates a dialogue between the public and private freight sectors with the goal of improving the public decision making process as it relates to Southeast Florida’s freight transportation system.
• The FTAC Coordinator and other MPO Staff are responsible for ensuring the FTAC fulfills its main functions.

• When• Typically the third Wednesday of
each quarter from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
• Where• The Broward MPO Offices; or a
• Partner Facility within Broward County Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway

How is the FTAC Structured
• The FTAC Members elect a Chair and a Vice-Chair that serve two (2) year terms. Officers may be elected for consecutive terms.
• The FTAC Coordinator is the primary point of contact and is responsible for pre- and post- Meeting activities. They maintain a contact distribution list that includes: Members (past and present), Advisors, Friends of the Committee, and MPO Staff.
• The FTAC Coordinator also serves as the Meeting Secretary. The Secretary is accountable for Agenda and Minutes based upon input from the Committee and the Advisors. The Secretary is also responsible for reviewing the Agenda and Minutes with the Chair prior to distribution.

• The goal is not to train your board in freight planning, rather it is to create a better overall understanding of the importance of freight to their metropolitan areas and how they might contribute to enhancing system performance
• Helps to vet planning projects, products, and processes
• Flexibility is key
• Helps solidify the MPO’s position as a regional leader
• Great way to form new relationships and strengthen established relationships
