On August 17 Indonesia will celebrate its most important day; Hari Merdeka or Independence Day. Being 68-years-old, this country is very much enjoying its freedom- similar to a kid in college that is being developed, both intellectually and socially. The nation is not afraid to let itself be exposed to new things, and for the most part, embraces new forms of arts and entertainment. One particular form of entertainment new to Jakarta is the One Fighting Championship, an international caliber mixed martial arts live show set to be held next month.

The world now knows that Indonesia is hungry for entertainment, and not just in the form of music concerts and operas; sports fans were spoiled with the arrival of big time football clubs Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea last month- all of which helped fill in the need for entertainment during fasting month.

This year’s independence celebration will be marked with several “returns” that ought to change the city for the better. Many Jakartans will return to the city after a weeklong Lebaran holiday- which the Muslims believe is a return to all things holy after a month of being purified. As you can see in our event’s timeline, this month also marks the return of big music concerts, one being the highly anticipated return of Metallica to Jakarta after their last concert here two decades ago. Not just returns, also this month we will see the first ever Indonesian Jass Festival, a two-day jazz festival featuring over 100 of Indonesia’s most talented jazz musicians.

There are plenty more shows on during the next month, check inside for the details.

What music are you into at the moment? Joining the hype: Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories. I’ve been interested in Daft Punk since they first came out with that “Around The World” video and then, of course, the Interstella 5555 album. But this latest album is quite something, especially since they’ve got Pharell and Nile Rodgers (I always love Chic!) on board—and it’s so well-produced. All the tracks sound really fresh and sassy plus those Nile tracks with their retro-disco touch. Love it. Another one is Karat & Arang, a double LP by my long-time friend Adrian Adioetomo. I’m so very proud of him and this time, I think he really nails it—this album is a very solid body of work, and it’s so him, with his beloved Dobro.

What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it?Wow this is tough… it was decades ago! I think it must have been Madonna’s Like A Virgin, which was 1984. I was nine and got my mom to buy it for me at Duta Suara, Sabang. One of those cassette tapes from local record pirates that didn’t show the original album cover, just some pin-up image of Madonna, which was pretty tame compared to the real cover.

What are your all-time favourite albums? Why?This is even tougher... there’s a lot. But since one has to make choices:

Farah Wardani is one busy lady. Frequently asked to judge national art competitions, Farah's main responsibility is her job managing the Indonesian Visual Arts Archive. In her spare time she is the artistic director responsible for preparing the 12th Yogyakarta Biennale to be held in November, 2013. Her life definitely revolves around art.

Tori Amos’ Little Earthquakes was the soundtrack of my teenage years (hmm… make it from high school to college!), mixed with Under The Pink. This album was like a gospel for every wallflower-weirdo-teen girl alive at that time. I took every song personally, especially “Winter” and “Precious Things”. This was before Tori got bottomed and went crazy making those unlistenable concept albums.

Tears for Fears’ Seeds of Love because I was in junior high school when Seeds of Love came out and it changed my preferences so much at that time. I mean, one minute I was one of the girls going ga-ga over New Kids On The Block and then my crush shifted to Roland Orzabal—who I love until now.

Jeff Buckley’s Grace. Adrian introduced me to Jeff just when Grace first came out. It was 1993? 1994? I don’t think I can do the album justice with a description! I still listen to it religiously, and create rituals with the songs. “Lilac Wine” and “Hallelujah” before going to bed. “Lover You Should’ve Come Over” is perfect during my more mellow moods. “So Real” and “Last Goodbye” when exercising, and so on and so forth.

The Cure’s Disintegration. It’s actually a tie with Wish—but somehow Disintegration is just…deeper and darker. All the songs are 90s anthems. I still shiver when “Plainsong” starts and always find moments of craving for “Pictures of You” to listen to—until now.

Tom Waits’ Small Change. Again it’s a tie with Closing Time and Foreign Affairs…but well, Small Change has got “Tom Traubert’s Blues”, which is just simply legendary, and those lyrics, and that voice… He’s immortal. He’s a God. A drunken one.

Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On. I’m a huge fan of Marvin and got all his albums from the early ones with Tammi Terell. But of course if one must choose, this one’s a classic and it’s so timeless... The lyrics are burning with social messages but at the same time also manage to be so groovy.

Scott Walker’s Scott 3. It’s just the most beautiful music and vocals ever recorded in one album, for me. “Copenhagen” still makes me cry. It’s just so beautiful, so heavenly.

What was the worst record you ever purchased? Also a lot. I bought lots of junk back in my teen years, one-hit-wonders and Top 40 stuff that I

never listen to anymore but sometimes still sing the songs in karaoke for guilty pleasure. I don’t really count them because I don’t think they’re worth caring about. But on the other hand I do remember my disappointment when buying Steve Vai’s Alien Love Secrets. I used to have a huge crush on him, loved his previous two albums, but that one is just plain forgettable.

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate?I would love to be a man for a change, doing something non-artsy, or just not in the creative field. Something spartan. Maybe an athlete. Or fitness instructor.

What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? I don’t read many books anymore. I’m reading books now mostly for references or theoretical basis for my writings—so it’s basically for work. Now it’s Archive and The Repertoire by Diana Taylor, a book on documentation of theatre and performing arts, since I am writing an essay for Teater Garasi’s 20th anniversary book. It’s really good, I give it a nine. Ugoran Prasad recommended it to me and I find it a really in-depth study of relations between archives and performativity.

What new movie should people see? Why?This is problematic! I haven’t seen any new movies lately! I don’t really find myself eager to go to the cinema chasing new films anymore but I am obsessed with TV series’ like Game of Thrones, which just ended season three. And yes, people should watch Game of Thrones from season one onwards. It’s epic. I’m a totally freak about it and can’t wait for season four next year.

What songs do you choose to start your weekend?I find J-Pop songs timelessly refreshing and still find myself turning on “Platinum” by Maaya Sakamoto on Saturday mornings just to wake me up. “Amai Koibito” by Hideki Kaji and Utada Hikaru’s “Keep Trying”. Basically, cute, upbeat, cheerful songs, because I find weekends boring and lethargic. I love weekdays more, a workaholic curse.

And songs you choose to end your weekend? The whole Marvin Gaye discography. I think it has become a kind of elevator music for me. I just turn it on for no reasons by the end of the day. “Distant Lover” has to go at the end of the playlist.

A nyone who has been in Indonesia for a number of years will have realised that the difference in year length between the Gregorian (Western) and Muslim

calendars means that the holy month of Ramadan plus the Idul Fitri holiday immediately afterwards occur about 10 days ‘earlier’ each year when measured by the Gregorian calendar.

Ramadan once fell around the end of the year; it runs from early July to early August this year, while next year it will run from late June to late July. This means that the year’s two major shopping seasons, Ramadan and Christmas/New Year, which once overlapped, are now clearly separated by almost six months, creating two distinct peaks in the shopping calendar.

The Jakarta Great Sale Festival, held to celebrate the anniversary of the capital city’s founding on June 22 (but also timed to coincide with the school holidays) ended in mid-July and was reckoned by its organizers a commercial success. Indeed, they are talking about the possibility of a Java-wide event next year.

Jakarta shopaholics may now splurge

twice a year, while new shops

continually add to the temptations ...

Two separate

peaks now in Jakarta’s

shopping calendar

Whatever happens, the Great Sale and intense shopping during Ramadan that always occurs in the run-up to Idul Fitri will almost coincide, so the mid-year shopping peak could be a record-breaking event in 2014.

Back in the present and on the ground, two new retail kids on the block illustrate the vibrancy and range of the capital’s contemporary shopping scene. Upmarket, Paris-based emporium Galeries Lafayette, with its stock a veritable roll call of top-notch brand names from the apparel and fragrance worlds, had its grand opening on June 13 after a soft opening a month earlier, and now occupies pride of place at Pacific Place mall.

Barely more than a stone’s throw away, Korean-based Lotte Shopping Avenue had its grand opening just over a week later in phase 1 of the Ciputra World complex on Jl. Dr Satrio, Kuningan, a superblock that will contain a hotel, apartments, offices, a concert hall and a museum, as well as a major new shopping mall. Unfortunately, the new Casablanca-Tanah Abang overpass, designed to relieve traffic in this area, has still not opened, so traffic congestion in the immediate vicinity is as bad as ever for the time being.

As Lotte is a key partner in running the mall, Jakarta shoppers will find it has a distinctly Korean ambience, with images and other reminders of K-pop idols on

display, plus brand names from the nation that might not yet be familiar. Japanese casual apparel retailer Uniqlo is also a prominent tenant here, having opened its first store in Indonesia. Don’t worry though: The old (and ubiquitous) favourites like Ranch Market, Periplus bookstore, Starbucks cafe and Cinema XXI are also present, too.

A novel feature at the mall is Lotte’s downtown duty-free store, where shoppers due to travel overseas simply show their passport and e-ticket to qualify them for duty-free purchases of a range of designer-label products without having to keep an eye on the clock. The goods are then collected just before departure at Lotte’s Soekarno-Hatta store in the international terminal. The goods now on offer at new and existing shops around the city are, of course, presented as temptingly as ever. Many will now be able to enjoy the thrill of the chase twice over as they seek genuine bargains at this year’s peak shopping periods. (Jim Read)

can’t be denied that during the month of Ramadhan, Kemang entertainment happenings are

put on a temporary hold. And although Lebaran (end of Ramadhan) is scheduled around August 8, traditionally for the one or even two weeks ahead there will still be a scarcity in partying as the Kemang workforce shall enjoy their annual Lebaran holiday. Be it in the city or going home to their villages in Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi, people are using this time to chill and catch up with relatives - similar to the Lunar New Year in China and Christmas in the West.

So the million dollar question is “when will Kemang be back in full swing”? Although still unconfirmed, some of the party houses in Kemang plan to throw an

“opening party” on August 24, but it’s safe to assume that August 31 we will see a more “normal” party situation down in the strip.

Not just about partying, Kemang is home to a plethora of interesting bits; from a tanning salon, to an outdoor kids play park (unequivocally called Palyparq), to numerous pet shops. And as this month many of our readers will celebrate Lebaran, it is only proper that in this edition of TBJ Kemang we highlight four of Kemang’s very own cake shops. After all, Lebaran is all about family lunches and dinners, and surely you wouldn’t want to come empty handed to such gatherings. Listed here are some of the independent, only-in-Kemang cake shops that bake to-die-for cakes.

Souly ButterLocated across the street from KFC Kemang, Souly Butter has been the go-to cake shop for Kemang residents for years. Although the shop is only the size of a college dorm room, the place fits a kitchen, mini lounge and even display rack all in one. Aside from the carrot cake, their star attraction is the Red Velvet cake and muffin, which was already popular amongst its loyal customers way before Union (Plaza Senayan) put Red Velvet on the map back in 2012.

Positioned in Plaza Kemang 88, the majority of the customers are housewives that stop by to drop off their kids in Kumon (math lessons) in Plaza Kemang 88. SiMply SplendidAfter a year of selling cupcakes, Simply Splendid’s majority of business today comes from special orders of 50 to 100 cupcakes for all sorts of parties. They have two sizes of cupcakes, with flavors such as rainbow cake, peanut butter, and banana nutella. The best part of the cupcake is their cream cheese topping which goes well with all of the flavor options. Aside from cupcakes, Simply Splendid also serves coffee as well as hot dogs and spaghetti but unfortunately no wifi available.

40’S CakeSFor Kemang regulars, Fourties (40’s) is known as a karaoke joint/ lounge/ restaurant. But what many don’t know is that they also have baked some pretty awesome cakes for over a year now. Aside from the typical cheese cake and black forest, 40’s cake shop’s best pick is the Blueberry Ombre, which is a mouthful of different textures of blueberry, but not in any way overwhelming. One other cake that’s worth to mention is the Candy Cake, and tastes similar to a Rainbow Cake but with a smoother cheese texture.

When I met Bernadeta Astari (a young Indonesian soprano star that is studying and living in Holland) a

couple months ago in Jakarta, I remember discussing an opera with her. Opera Attima, een Javaanse Liefdestragedie (Javanese Tragedy Love Story) is not just an ordinary opera. It has a unique mixture of both eastern and western elements and the only opera from Indische (Dutch name for Indonesia during the colonial time) before 1945.

It is actually a fact that during colonial times in Indonesia, not only

traders traveled here, but also music composers from Netherlands. Inspired by their experience here, composers such as Constant van der Wall, Paul Seelig, Linda

Bandara and Bernard van den Sigtenhorst Meyer adopted many traditional melodies, stories and norms that are actually influenced by Indonesian culture.

Opera Attima (short for “heart” and “gold” in Dutch) is a result of composer Constant van de Wall’s experience during his stay in Indonesia. Gamelan sounds and pentatonic harmony that is a trademark of Indonesia can be heard clearly throughout his opera. Constant van de Wall composed both music and libretto focusing on the life of Attima – a Javanese dancer that fell in love with a Dutch boy name Armand. Meanwhile another character named Kartono, who is another dancer from the same gamelan group is also in love with Attima.

With Kartono wooing Attima, at the end she chooses Armand and quits her dance group for him. Broken hearted, Kartono becomes vengeful and with Aissa’s aid (another dancer in the group who is actually in love with Kartono), Kartono kills Armand with a keris. The desperate Attima who sees the entire drama unravel in front of her eyes, takes the keris from Kartono’s hands and stabs it into her chest. The death of this lover brings the opera to an end.

The music composition that Constant van de Wall created for Opera Attima is leaning to Puccini’s late romantic opera style that is heavy on lyrical romantic melodies. It is somehow reminiscent of Madama Butterfly that was written in 1904 and also has pentatonic melodies wrapped in an exotic Asian atmosphere.

Attima was first premiered on January 8, 1917 at Koninklijke Schouwburg van Den Haag before continuing to Theatre de l’Opera Royal Francais de La Haye in France a few years after it. The opera was performed in Batavia (now Jakarta) in 1922. Critics at that time praised this opera for its original music, universal strength and the aesthetic side that was reflected in the composition. After Attima, Constant van de Wall also composed many works that has Indonesian and Melayu inspirations which earned him the title “Componist tussen oost en west” – the composer between east and west.

Constant van de Wall (1871-1945) spent his younger days in Surabaya and Semarang before becoming a world citizen with his wife cum soprano Maria van Noppen and went around the world from Surabaya to Den Haag, Monte Carlo, Batavia and Nice. He studied music in Den Haag before continuing to a music conservatory in Berlin. In 1906, he was named as one of the most promising Dutch composers.

In 2008, this opera was finally performed again as part as Den Haag annual festival at its original birthplace Koninklijk Schouwburg. Though colonial times in Indonesia weren’t the best of times, it was an introduction for Indonesian music to the world.

Thank you Bernadeta Astari for sharing this opera.

Never ones to dabble in subtlety, the super-stylised Sydney duo of Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore make no bones about playing up to the psychedelic voyager image they’ve perfected, and are already well known on the festival circuit as having the best wardrobe this side of Star Wars central casting.

Image aside, it’s not hard to see why 2008’s debut effort Walking on a Dream went twice platinum on home turf and gold in the notoriously-hard-to-crack US of A, the feel good disco euphoria contained therein having the same sort of effect as a bottle of Ritalin - you just can’t sit still on it. Happily, Ice on the Dune picks up exactly where Walking… left off, whooshing us straight back off to the outer reaches of their fanciful netherworld of cerebral electro-wizardry.

How much you choose to immerse yourself in what the pair have described as a “post apocalyptic adventure” is up to you, but with such does-what-it-says-on-the-tin song titles like ‘Surround Sound”, “Awakening” and “Celebrate” resistance becomes increasingly futile, and by the time the anthemic “Loving every minute ‘cause you make me feel so alive” chorus on “Alive” rolls around three tracks in you’d have to be deaf not to be shouting along with everyone else.

Careless listeners may rashly write Ice on the Dune off as the sort of cheap thrill you might find at the more commercial end of the biz, but as with all the best proper recent pop (Saint Etienne’s Words and Music or Daft Punk’s acclaimed Random Access Memories spring to mind) Steele and Littlemore have real songwriting chops, meaning that the arrangements are spot on and the ubiquitous homages to pop’s past are never far from bubbling to the surface. “Concert Pitch” and “I’ll be Around” re-imagine effortless Fleetwood Mac style melodies for the digital generation - all that’s missing are the Lindsay Buckingham guitar solos, but otherwise they are both flawless highpoints. “Keep a Watch” is pure Bowie, perhaps a little too thick admittedly, but a worthy closer to an exceptional LP nonetheless.

Whether Ice on the Dune eclipses their debut is anyone’s guess, but if you’re going to be in Bali over the next few months then expect it to be the soundtrack to the high season.

Set sometime after X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), Logan (Hugh Jackman) travels to Japan where a stranger from his past confronts him, leading to lasting consequences for our superhero’s future.

Determined to defeat the stranger and his emotional demons, Wolverine puts his adamantium claws to good use against ninjas and other mutants. So, let’s get this straight, we have ninjas and Wolverine battling each other. This has a lot of awesome potential, but if it’s cheesy as the first stand alone Wolverine film, we’ll be disappointed.

Writer: Mark Bomback (screenplay), Christopher McQuarrie (screenplay), Scott Frank (screenplay), Chris Claremont (characters and works), Frank Miller (characters and works). The joy of summer is still among us and we have a load of blockbusters both big and small on the calendar. Wolverine from the X-Mean series is in Japan, the Smurfs move to Paris and The Lone Ranger, well, he’s somewhere in Disney’s verion of the west. Looks like it’s time to update that DVD collection at your DVD shop or if you can find yourself a date, check out www.21cineplex.com!

Gargamel, that grouch who hates the Smurfs for no good reason has created two evil Smurf-like creatures named Hackus and Vexy AKA the Naugthies. In order to change them into real Smurfs, who can grant any of Gargamel’s evil wishes, he must first capture Smurfette who is the only one who can cast the secret magic spell. This sequel to The Smurfs (2011) follows the Smurfs and their human friends to Parisin order to rescue Smurfette. Ever wonder why there’s only one female Smurf?

Cast: Hank Azaria, Jonathan Winters, Katy Perry, Fred Armisen, Christina Ricci, J. B. Smoove.

When six members of Texas Ranger Division are ambushed by a band of outlaws led by Butch Cavendish, one Texas Ranger survives. He is saved by a Native American, feather-festooned Tonto (Johnny Depp). And so it begins...sorta. This film by Walt Disney Pictures revives one of America’s most enduring pop

culture characters. If you’ve watched Pirates of the Carribean and Rango, where Gore Verbinski and Johhny Depp worked together, you may have some high expectations. I wouldn’t put those expectation too high though, because if you do, you’re going to have an ordinary time watching this roller coaster of a cowboy ride.

To highlight the glamorous retro mood, there was also a jaguar-printed mink cape worn over a round-neck top and stretch flannel wrap skirt with a ruffled detail on one side, while an oversize wool coat with cigarette pants added a more masculine touch. Creative director, Frida Giannini, focused on Fifties-inspired shapes and a sophisticated combination of sober greens with an intense teal and hints of leopard. “This is a contemporary femme fatale who relishes her own dark mood,” said Giannini. “Armed with an invulnerable aesthetic, she has an elusive sensuality — like the protagonist in a game of pursuit.”

Marking the debut of his tenure at Balenciaga, Alexander Wang showed his first collection for the lore-rich house recently in Paris. Circle-cut hemlines, voluminous sleeves and boneless shoulders were all apparent just as founder Cristóbal Balenciaga and later Nicolas Ghesquière would have done. Thus, its new chief made an undoubtedly smart choice in decelerating his own street bravado in favor of Balenciaga’s norms — the only evident Wangisms were iterations of exposed strapless bras and a black column dress featuring the same waist-wrap drape used at his eponymous fall collection in New York. On a brighter note, Wang’s footwear looks promising – marble-whorled on the soles and punishingly chic in their pointed tips and perilous toe-cleavage. But no matter how sharp the shoe, baby steps (almost literally, considering the designer’s 20-something years) need to be taken, where Wang succeeded. Sensitivities met, his next challenge is to find a way to make it all pop.

The timing could not have been more perfect for Swatch to release their new Scuba Libre Collection. It’s summertime

in most parts of the world, which means we’re in full holiday mode. What other watch would be more fun to wear during the holidays than the fun-colored timekeepers on offer from Swatch? Holidays sometimes involve beaches and pool sides, which means plenty of playing in the water. With the new Swatch Scuba Libre, we won’t have to worry about water damage because it’s water resistant for up to 200 meters!

I suppose Nadine Chandrawinata was chosen as the ambassador for Swatch Scuba Libre because she loves diving and the marvels of the underwater world. She needs a watch to check how much time she’s spent playing with the fish underwater, so she turned to Swatch for its low maintenance and fun, bright colors. Not to mention that it looks as great up on terra firma as it does under the sea!

During the opening of the media preview, Nadine was telling us about her love of Swatch watches and tried to recall her first Swatch. She and MC Ary Kirana seemed happy trying to flip back through pages of mental memories from their younger days, and I’m sure plenty of us there too have gone through certain stages of life with Swatch.

Now that we have our summertime watch issues sorted out, time to think of holiday destinations where I can take it swimming!

I reviewed the Lunasol Modelling Glossy Eyes in #02 Soft Khaki some time ago and I promised a step-by-step guide to creating the smokey eye look with this

palette, which will be a dark green one. The color payoff from every single color pan in this palette is fantastic, and the applicators are actually usable. So instead of reaching for my trusted brushes, I created the looks below by using the two applicators provided in the palette.

TUTORIALSMOKEY

GREENEYES

I used my finger to lightly dab on the cream eyeshadow on my whole lid as a base, but if you have oil-prone lids, I suggest that you use your most trusted eyeshadow primer for longer staying power. This one has a shimmery finish, so I don't have to apply a highlighter on the browbone.

With the flat brush, apply the taupe-ish green eyeshadow to your lid up to the crease line. Dab the brush lightly since this eyeshadow is quite pigmented and you don't want an eyeshadow fallout disaster on your hands.

With the other end of the brush applicator, I applied the dark green and created a V-shape in the outer corner of my eyes. Don't worry about blending it just yet, we just want to apply eyeshadow at that area first.

Now with your eyes open (which will make it easier to determine your crease line) blend the eyeshadow into the crease line toward the centre of your lid and make sure that the two colours are blended together. Stroke the brush lightly and don't use any pressure at all.

Page 57: The Beat Jakarta 88

www.beatmag.com 57

STYLE

This is where the pointy sponge applicator comes in handy. Dab it lightly in the green eyeshadow with the golden shimmer.

Apply it to your lower waterline - not exactly at the waterline but just below it. Start at the outer corner of your eyes until you cover 3/4 of your waterline. Again, to avoid any eyeshadow fallout disaster, don't put too much product on the applicator.

With the other side of the sponge applicator, apply the highlighting shade to the inside corners of your eye and waterline and blend it towards the dark green shade that you just applied. Et voila, this is the final look. I just apply eyeliner and mascara to finish off the look.

This look could go for real full-on smokey eyes, depending how high you want to define the crease line. It depends on your preference. Since I had to go to dinner with friends afterward, I toned it down a bit. Enjoy your new smokey eyes!

The fashion festival season is upon us! A flurry of press conferences have recently been held in anticipation of fashion week season, one of these being

Jakarta Fashion Week 2014. Earlier this week, the media were gathered together to hear about the commencement of the Grazia Model Search 2013. Judge Diaz Parazada stated that Jakarta Fashion Week is more than just a festival, but rather a forum that hopes to shake up the industry by introducing new talents through competition. The model search is just one of the many competitions that will be held throughout JFW, which includes the storied designer competition (Lembaga Perancang Mode), and a contest especially crafted for fashion bloggers!

Even earlier this month, we were rounded up to hear the announcement of yet another show at a different fashion festival: the IPMI Trend Show 2014 at the Bazaar Fashion Festival.

The Council of Indonesian Fashion Designers (IPMI) is the oldest, most

STYLE

Page 59: The Beat Jakarta 88

respected fashion institution in this country. Members initiated into this circle of elite designers have been carefully selected by senior council members based on a strict but organic set of criteria, which includes consistency, identity, and a strong following. If this were Star Trek, they are basically the Vulcan High Council.

The annual IPMI Trend Show remains a strong event after its debut nearly thirty years ago. Flanked between IPMI head Tri Handoko and Iwan Tirta creative director Era Soekamto, was Harper’s Bazaar Indonesia Editor-in-Chief Ria Lirungan. She explained how her publication has always corralled and showcased new talents in Indonesian fashion. Era Soekamto further stressed how necessary it is for the Council to evolve, and to enrich Indonesian fashion by holding annual trend shows that do not mislead the masses. IPMI has

a responsibility to hold fleshed-out shows, and one way it is doing that this year is by cementing new commitment with Harper’s Bazaar Indonesia.

That afternoon, IPMI also announced the addition of three new council members among its ranks, whose names already hold plenty of clout: Danny Satriadi, Yogie Pratama, and Mel Ahyar are no strangers to praise. Their respective lines, brands, and fans have earned them the respect of senior IPMI members.

Tri Handoko stated that the respective designers’ trademark style and established names in the industry were critical to their rising among the elite IPMI ranks, but they were also singled out for the interview portion of their selection process, in which they exhibited a vision and mission that mirrored that of IPMI’s. Era Soekamto had difficulty trying to pinpoint a single criteria that led the council to their final decision, at last settling to describe the three as possessing a “shining” factor. They were selected for strong characters, techniques, and readiness to unionize.

While no dates have been announced just yet for the Bazaar Fashion Festival, we can safely announce Jakarta Fashion Week 2014 will be held between October 19-25 at Senayan City for the first time ever. Keep an ear to the ground for dates of the Trend Show, because it’ll definitely be another one for the books.

Tiara, the proprietor of Eat Love Lift, has a wonderful circle of clients: they are a bunch of wonderful ladies who are determined to live a healthier life by exercising and eating nutritiously. Some of her first clients were Dinda Utami and Rini Harsono. I’m amazed by how quickly they’ve transformed their body by shedding body fat and getting stronger. Just like Tiara, Dinda is a mom of two, so they are my personal inspirations when it comes to committing and finding the time to exercise, as I have two kids myself. So since this is Ramadhan, I’m curious to know how they are going to incorporate exercise and clean eating throughout the fasting month. I thought they were planning on slacking off a little bit, but it turns out when you are as determined as they are, you won’t give yourself any excuses! Let’s find out how they plan on doing that!

How long have you been working out and eating clean?Dinda: I have always been active, and I go to the gym about three to four times a week. I am currently doing Cross Fit two times a week and hit the gym the other two times a week. I have started eating clean for the about five months now by eating as many fresh foods as possible while avoiding sugar and processed foods.Rini: Three months. At first I only

went to the gym but now I do Cross Fit and swim occasionally on my active recovery days.

So what’s the plan for Ramadhan?Dinda: So far, there are no changes to my workout plan. I may tone down the intensity at the gym during the first week of Ramadhan as my body may need to adjust to my new eating schedule.Rini: Still exercising and clean eating. I will try to do my usual heavy workout first and see how my body handles it. I’ll push myself but will also listen to my body. How are you going to incorporate exercise into the new schedule?Dinda: The best time for me to exercise

I will still do Cross Fit and other exercises at the gym.Rini: Just like Dinda, I like working out after breaking fast. I’ll lift weights at the gym and do Cross Fit. It’s business as usual.

How about the eating plan?Dinda: This year is going to be different than last year. I’m going to limit sugar loading during fast-breaking and replace them with fresh and real food like fruits or kurma. For the big meal, I will eat complex carbs during sahur and protein-veggies only during my evening meal.Rini: I’m going to stick with my clean eating program because I feel that I have more energy since I’ve changed my eating habit. When breaking fast during Ramadhan, I consume whey protein and fruits with a high energy payoff, like dates and bananas. I’ll also have my favorite fruit, watermelon, an hour

before working out. I eat dinner after working out and will have more proteins, vegetables, and complex carbs. What’s your #FitNFab goal during Ramadhan?Dinda: I want to get leaner maybe bring down my body fat to 20% from the current 22%.Rini: To be stronger and see progress. Hopefully I can do deadlifts and squats with heavier weights. My overall target is to reduce body fat by 10%, so a decrease in body fat during this Ramadhan is the goal.

See, Ramadhan is not an excuse to slacken off. Idul Fitri is coming and there will be more sugary and floury treats full of fat coming our way.

From a humble beginning in Tokyo in 2001, Marutama Ra-Men has become a global brand providing an authentic and satisfying Japanese ramen dining experience using only the finest ingredients in the recipes. Unlike other ramen recipes, Marutama Ra-Men uses a chicken stock-based soup called Toripaitan which has a distinct, delicious taste. Furthermore, the ramen noodle is homemade, and no MSG is used; it’s hearty and healthy!

With several outlets in Indonesia, recently they came up with several new menu items that’ll surely please. There are seven new ramen dishes and two new gohan (rice) dishes. Go for the soy beans-based Miso Ramen, or try the Tamago Ramen with the special half-boiled soy sauce-seasoned egg which looks hard boiled from the outside, but with soft and runny inside. In Japan, this additional topping won “the best tamago” award! And there are still many flavorsome toppings for the ramen, such as negi, Aosa seaweed, ground nuts, and Char Siew meat.

If you feel like having rice dishes, the Katsu Curry Rice is a sure bet; the Japanese curry is even more flavorful with Toripaitan soup and apple in the mix.

Marutama Ra-Men also has pork as topping for your dishes, but whichever you choose, get ready for a tasty trip to the culinary world of Japan!

With the menu that we all know and love, this is Pepper Lunch’s 18th outlet in Indonesia. And this is a full service restaurant, with bigger and more menu items than the Pepper Lunch Express ones. The Do-It-Yourself hot plate dishes have proven to be a big hit with foodies. Enjoy mixing your rice with quality imported meats, vegetables, and of course, butter for that extra flavor. Don’t forget the delicious miso soup, shake salad, and even ice cream!

Another new concept from Boga Group is Master Wok. Located on the same floor as Pepper Lunch (but on the food court), Master Wok is a hip and unique Chinese fast food outlet. Give them a try.

Common People Eatery & Bar is a Kemang establishment that has quickly gained a firm following, so much so that they boast a full house on the weekends and most nights. The interior is rustic chic with stripped down industrial décor. Check out the gorgeous chandeliers! The dining area is quite airy, and the communal tables are set for casual conversations among new friends. The lounge area on the side looks very comfy, with plush sofas and warm wooden floor and exposed brick wall juxtaposing nicely. There’s a cozy patio seating area if you feel like dining al fresco, too. Although the ambiance is playful, the kitchen takes their job very seriously. personifies his travel and culinary experiences.Try the Caesar Salad (55k) as starter; it’s like your typical Caesar salad, but with a little extra oomph, courtesy of the roasted garlic, spiced chicken, and anchovy dressing! The People’s Burger (65k) really hit the bull's eye; homemade beef patty and burger bun, with glazed mushroom, Parmesan crisp, and special house spread, served with potato crisps. Highly recommended. As for dessert, the Common Platter (85k) is just perfect; petite-sized Molten Chocolate Fondant, Pannacotta, and Fruit Pavlova that’ll surely satisfy your sweet cravings. These individual items can also be ordered as full-sized desserts, should you feel like it.Common People is open for breakfast, and boy, do they serve a mean spread! From typical Toast with Preserved Jam or Honey (25k), to Granola with Yoghurt and Tropical Fruits (55k), to Scrambled Eggs with Field Mushroom and Toast (40k).But try the Egg Benny, their version of egg benedict. You can have these perfectly poached eggs with Hollandaise sauce dish with your choice of accompaniment such as Ham or Smoked Beef (55k), Mushroom Roasted Tomato (65k), Pork or Chicken Sausage (65k), or our favorite, the flavorsome Crab Patties (85k). The Steak and Eggs (150k) is also a favorite

breakfast dish here; the steak is accompanied with fried or scrambled eggs, with grilled sourdough bread. Yummy! If you feel like having these dishes after the breakfast hours, you can. They are available all day long. The bar here has an extensive drink menu. Much loved drinks such as Margarita, Mojito, or Manhattan (80k respectively) are available, but the specialties are what you should go for. The Watermelon & Lychee Tini (90k) is a blend of vodka, triple sec, orange juice, lychee syrup, watermelon, lychee, and lime twist. Definitely something the ladies would love. And how about the Black Tequila (110k)? It’s a mix of tequila, triple sec, lime juice, simple syrup, chocolate liqueur, and sparkling wine. Other notable tipples here are the Million Dollar (90k); a potent combo of Gordon’s gin, Martini Rosso, dry martini, pineapple juice, egg white, and Angostura Bitters, and the Tombstone (80k); Jim Beam Black, sugar syrup, and Angostura Bitters. A number of mocktails and coffee-based cocktails are also offered here at Common People. Open from 6.30am to 11pm daily, Mezza is located on the Mezzanine floor just above the lobby. Size wise, its not too big. Don’t expect a huge dining area with extensive buffet like those big hotels, but what they lack in size they make up in warmth. The eatery looks more like a cozy city café. There’s a medium-sized dining area by the front entrance, and there’s also a lounge on the right side of the room. This lounge area is somewhat inviting; it could be a good place to hold a casual business talk, or to have a nice dinner with a loved one.

The food at Mezza is actually pretty good. We visited Mezza on an early evening, while escaping the busy rush hour traffic. We might have found ourselves a nice oasis here.

We began with the hearty Potato Leek Soup (45k); this creamy soup is served with a puff pastry stick and chicken sausage skewer. For a more exotic type of soup, you can try the Herbal Chicken Soup (45k); a nutritious Chinese herbal clear soup with chicken and Chinese spices.

Speaking of Chinese food, the Szechuan Mix Seafood (65k) is a tasty mix of sautéed seafood with spicy Szechuan sauce, served with steamed rice and salad with Chinese dressing. And the Hainanese Chicken Rice (65k) is as reliable as ever; poached chicken leg or breast served with Hainan rice, ginger, and chicken broth.

There is more than Oriental food at Mezza. The steaks are also superb here. The Tenderloin Steak (240k) is quite popular; tender beef

tenderloin with spinach and vegetables, served with a choice of sauce: mushroom, balsamic red wine, black pepper, or tomato and red wine with beef bacon. But the Lamb Chop (135k) is a great choice also; grilled lamb rack, served with spinach beef cake, vegetables, and crushed nuts. We absolutely recommend this dish!

The Ruben Sandwich (65k) doesn’t exactly say ‘New York’, but it’s still quite good; smoked beef and cheese on white bread with mayonnaise, lettuce, and tomato, and served with a side of fries. Go for the Club Sandwich (75k) instead; a classic triple decker with chicken, beef bacon, sliced tomato, sliced egg, and lettuce, and served with some fries. A time-honored dish, if there is one.

Mezza’s desserts also win big points. Try the Apple Tatin (38k); baked apple tart topped with vanilla ice cream, and served with buco salad and butter scotch sauce, or the Cassata (38k); a classic Italian ice cake served with almond darcquise and fruit mix, with white wine sabayon sauce. Sweet!

As for drinks, the Blue Passion (35k); a mix of blue liquid blend, with vanilla ice cream and marquise syrup is a good choice. And the healthy veggie-and-fruit concoctions of the Green Rasuna (33k) and Cucumber Delight (38k) are really enjoyable. (Budi Iskandar)

There’s a new player in town ready to shake things up in the capital city’s culinary scene. Yamas is a new Greek restaurant located on Jalan Prapanca

in the south of Jakarta. The name itself means ‘cheers’ in Greek. Yamas opened its doors to cater to the discerning tastes of Jakarta’s foodies at the end of April this year. While the restaurant is not too big in size, it definitely has a certain intimate vibe about it. Wood dominates the interior, while pictures of Greece adorn its walls. The curved window sills add a nice accent to the room, and the big wooden barrels at the back of the bar give a warm, neighborhood Taverna feel to the place. The road in front of Yamas is often busy, when we visited the restaurant one late afternoon, it felt nice to find a little refuge from all the traffic. And this place really puts you at ease with its homey, laid back, unpretentious atmosphere. Some traditional Greek music was playing on the sound system and welcomed us as we stepped inside the restaurant. The food here is simply wonderful. Well, you just have to begin with the fresh Greek Garden Salad (45k); a fresh mix of tomato, cucumber, red onion, paprika, and Greek feta cheese. Tossed in vinaigrette dressing and sprinkled with oregano, it’s a perfect starting point for your tour of Greek cuisine. Another noteworthy appetizer is the Bourekia (40k); a dish of fried eggplant filled with minced beef. And the Feta Psiti (40k) is an oven baked feta cheese dish that is also a good starter.

And now off to the main course. By the way, the head chef is from Greece, so you definitely have an authentic Greek culinary experience here at Yamas. You should go for the Kontouvsouvli Lamb (115k). The succulent lamb is well marinated and slow-roasted over open charcoal pit, and served with baked potato on the side. It is an exquisite dish. If seafood is more to your liking, then the squid

dish called Calamari Gemisto (120k) is for you; the succulent calamari is stuffed with rice, fresh tomato, and paprika. Other must haves at Yamas are the Homemade Moussaka (75k); a tasty traditional Greek dish made out of layers of baked potatoes, minced beef, and eggplant. And then of course, you just got to taste the Greek Kebabs (85k for

lamb or 75k for chicken) here! The meat dishes here are just magnificent, and the freshly made Tzatziki dip on these dishes is simply sublime. It is a perfect complement to the savory taste of the food. And make room for the sweet dessert of Baklava (35k); layers of filo pastry with walnut and honey. The Rizogalo (30k) is yet another delicious dessert at Yamas, which is a rice and creamy Greek rice pudding.Greek restaurants are few and far between in Jakarta, but at Yamas, you can be sure that you’re in for a tasty culinary trip to Greece! Yamas is a solid addition to Jakarta’s culinary scene. (Budi Iskandar)

It consists of a wireless keychain remote control and a wall-mounted or freestanding dispenser whose hopper is filled with dry kibble or treats. Harnessing the conditioning techniques Ivan Pavlov discovered with salivating canines, owners can direct the dispenser to release a treat whenever a dog behaves well, reinforcing good habits and teaching dogs to equate them with food. The 25’ range eliminates the need to always have treats nearby and provides training opportunities throughout a home.
