n We sure did get a lot of comments on last week’s Tell Tales from the “Great Swami”. Even Gary Rasmussen told me he was pleased to have been named the director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources! Remember folks, it was all in fun! However, many of my craziest predictions have actually happened!
n We have a couple of new businesses that have recently opened in downtown Port Clinton. Sloopy’s in Lakeside is now a chain! They recently opened at the location of the former Port Clinton Pizza House in the 200 block of S. Madison. Right across the street is a new Sports Bar and eatery, Rivalry Sports Hub, located in the old Fireplace Lounge. Good luck to both those businesses.
n Our “Find Wylie” winner this week is Steve Rhoad from Tiffin who found our friendly fish hiding in the ad for Bassett’s Market on page 5A. He was chosen from among 94 contestants who entered our weekly contest. So, Steve wins our weekly $20 gift card from Friendship Food Stores. n I am spending much too much time visiting Funeral Homes these days. Very sorry to learn of the untimely death of Sarah Hall, who was my son Mark’s first neighborhood friend when we moved here in 1984. She was a beautiful girl. Dick Larcey, the father of Catawba resident Barry Larcey and Kendra (Larcey) Koehler, editor of the Put-in-Bay Gazette and a long-time friend, passed away last Sunday. Dick was also a resident of Catawba. Then Friday, I attended the funeral of little Madison Kletecka, granddaughter of our account executive Vicky Kletecka and her husband Chuck. She was just 2-1/2 years old and helped Grandma “ring the bell” for Salvation Army at Bassett’s Market just before Christmas. She was the same age as my grandson Elyjah.
n The Port Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce is holding their monthly Business After Hours tonight (Thursday, January 8) from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Gary Anderson Shooting Range at Camp Perry, sponsored by the Civilian Marksmanship Program. Hope to see you there.
n Speaking of the Chamber of Commerce, local Businesses are being invited to recognize those community businesses and individuals that have positively contributed to the greater Port Clinton community. Each spring, the Port Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce gives out five special awards based on separate criteria. Lighthouse Award: Recognizes a business that has made an outstanding contribution in their field; Outstanding Citizen: Recognizes an individual who through hard work and achievements have contributed to the citizens and/or the well-being of the business community of Ottawa County; New Business: recognizes a business that opened in 2014; Beautification Award: recognizes a business that has significantly contributed to the aesthetic enhancement of the Greater Port Clinton Community either at their place of business or at another area in the City/County (i.e. a park or public area); Business Member of the Year; recognizes the overall contribution of the business/individual to the Chamber, the community and the business environment. Nomination forms are available at the Port Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce office at 110 Madison Street in downtown Port Clinton. Nominations should be turned in by February 6. The Awards dinner will be held on Thursday, April 16.
n I enjoyed speaking to the attendees of the weekly Men’s Prayer Breakfast at Trinity United Methodist Church in Port Clinton last Tuesday, December 30. They are always looking for new members to join them. They get served a nice breakfast every Tuesday morning starting at 8 a.m. and they make a special effort to offer up prayers for local folks who are under the weather or otherwise experiencing health issues. n Otterbein North Shore Retirement Community has a busy month of activities planned. Their iPad classes will be held again this Friday, January 9 at 10 a.m. They are hosting a “Potluck at Lakeside” next Thursday, January 15. Their book discussion group meets the third Monday of each month (next meeting January 19). They will be holding a special 20th Anniversary

year, North Madison Street in Port Clinton was filled with celebration despite the cold.
In addition to the Walleye Drop at midnight, there were children’s activities during the early evening. Emergency response vehicles from around the county gathered for children to see in an event called Touch a Truck which started at 5 p.m. This gives children a chance to see the vehicles up close and personal, even
getting a chance to sit in the seats and sound the sirens.At 6 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus building there
was a mini Walleye Drop where The Ice Queen and her sister from Frozen were also in attendance. The Frozen characters posed with children for photos.
Mackenzie Bart, Miss Ohio 2014, was greeting mem-bers of the community at the festivities.

Madison Olivia Kletecka was born in Newport Beach, California, to her loving parents, Charlie and Kristie Kletecka. The three of them relocated to Columbus, Ohio, in February 2013 to be closer to family before adding the fourth member of their family, Greyson, born in February of this year.
Madison had a fond admiration for Clifford, Curious George, owls, and bossing around her little brother. Her beautiful disposition filled the biggest of rooms with love, energy and laughter.
In addition to her keen fashion sense that included pairing winter hats with brightly colored tutus (often while running in circles through the house), Madison enjoyed completing puzzles and art projects. She was an extremely bright child who quickly caught on to learning her numbers and colors. Madison also enjoyed giving “huggys,” jumping on the couch, and eating chocolate; although she was not keen on eating real food.
As her parents, we feel very blessed with all the fond memories and happy moments we will continue to enjoy in our hearts. She will forever be an influence on our appreciation for the simple things in life and we are thankful for the time we had with our Madi Bear, however too short.
She is preceded in death by her grandfather, Kenneth Lariccia Sr. and several great-grandparents. She is survived by her adoring parents Charlie and Kristie Kletecka and her baby brother, Greyson, all of Westerville, Ohio; grandparents Chuck and Vicky “Gaboo” Kletecka; Bev and Jordan Soulerin; and Lynn Koby.
The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 2, at 10 a.m. in the Chapel at Sunset Memorial Park, 6245 Columbia Rd. North Olmsted, where family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.

BY JASMINE CUPPOn Monday, January 5, the Toledo Blade reported that
Mike Rose of Washington Properties plans to move for-ward with his residential and commercial development of Water Works Park. The project, which is available for view on The Beacon website on the right hand side under the fishing report, is proposed to take up only 15% of the 14 acre waterfront property.
“We are still very interested, and we feel the commu-nity is still extremely supportive,” The Blade reported that Rose said. “We feel that the plan we presented was an outstanding concept and an economic benefit to the re-gion.”
In the November general election, Port Clinton resi-dents approved an ordinance that requires the sale or transfer of city parkland to be voted on in a general elec-tion. The ordinance, put forward by CORD (Citizens Or-ganized for Responsible Development), narrowly passed the night of November 2.
“I think it’s a worthwhile project that needs further in-vestigation,” said Port Clinton Mayor Leone on the proj-ect. “We have been working diligently up to this point on numbers. We need realistic numbers for both sides of the aisle. What we have now are not actuals. To have a deal come to the table, we need to have actual numbers.”
“The Blade mentioned 2007 and change of zoning. Rose and I have spoken loud and clear on moving the city for-ward. This hasn’t faded in our community. The initiative on the ballot was misleading and sold inappropriately,” said Mayor Leone. “I am glad Mike Rose understands that and wants to put something on the table. When this finally does go to the citizens and they vote on it they will see we have done our due diligence for the betterment of the city.”
“We will be transparent and get the right information to the community, not the Facebook opinion information. I have faith in the people of Port Clinton,” said Mayor Le-one.

According to Ottawa County Auditor, Lawrence Hart-laub, the recent passage of House Bill 85 increases the amount of homestead exemption for military veterans who are rated 100% disabled from a service-related dis-ability from $25,000 to $50,000. It also exempts disabled veterans from the income means testing, regardless of age.
The bill is designed to add all disabled veterans to the list of individuals who may apply for the homestead-tax exemption, as well as increase their deduction from $25,000 to $50,000. This means a disabled veteran who qualifies would only have to pay taxes on $100,000 of a home valued at $150,000.
To receive the increased exemption under the bill, a homeowner must be a veteran of the United States armed forces, reserves, or National Guard who was honorably discharged with a service-connected total and perma-nent disability certified by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs or other federal agency. Otterbein North Shore is offering a stroke support group entitled, Gather-ing of Stroke Champions, at 2 p.m. ev-ery third Tuesday of the month. The next meeting will be held on January 20. In an effort to protect patients, their families and staff this flu season, Fire-lands Regional Medical Center will begin restricting visitors to people 18 and older and immediate family or immediate sup-port persons. The visitor restrictions will go into effect immediately.
Firelands Regional Medical Center also asks that anyone experiencing flu symp-toms (fever, chills, headache, cough, sore
throat, muscle aches) refrain from visiting any patient in the hospital. Many patients are highly susceptible to infection.

Port Clinton Middle School Athletic Director and retired teacher, Bob Polachek, was honored at a surprise ceremony on Tuesday, December 23, between the grade 7 and 8 boys’ basketball games.
Ms. Carrie Sanchez, PCMS Principal, told the crowd, “We have chosen today to honor and ex-press our deepest gratitude to Mr. Bob Polachek, with this plaque that will be placed outside the PCMS gymnasium so that everyone will know the quiet guy behind all Port Clinton Athlet-ics.” The plaque reads Bob Polachek – Edu-cator, Coach, Dedicated Redskin: Mr. Bob Po-lachek began his teaching career with the Port Clinton City School District in 1974 and retired in 2012. Throughout his years of service, he was one of the most hard-working and dedicated staff members in the school district. Even after retiring, he continues to serve Port Clinton Red-skin Athletics. Over his career he has coached multiple athletic teams including Middle School
Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Football, Track, Cross Country, and Golf. As the Middle School Athletic Director and Athletic Booster Trustee, he is a fixture at all Middle School and High School Athletic events.
The presentation was not the only surprise of the evening as his wife Barb arranged for their children to make the trip to Port Clinton, their son Michael Polachek was unable to attend. The children did not appear until the start of the pro-gram. Mr. Polachek will continue to serve Port Clinton athletics, however, the Mr. Rick Domi-nick and the athletic department wanted to ex-press their gratitude for all he has done for the program since 1974. Many special guests were in attendance including PCMS staff, Redskin coaches, district administration and past Port Clinton Athletic Booster Officers.

The program is available for new and existing commu-nity friendly events that take place in Ottawa County. It is designed to assist non-profit organizations and small businesses in promoting events that generate overnight stays, create media exposure, increase area economic impact and generate awareness that Lake Erie Shores & Islands is a year-round destination.
The primary mission of the Visitors Bureau is to encour-age economic development in Ottawa County through promotion of tourism for business, pleasure and enrich-ment. Organizations that hold events that fit within this mission are encouraged to take advantage of the avail-ability of the grant funds.
All applicants who have not previously applied for an Ottawa County Visitors Bureau Tourism Marketing Grant are required to attend one of two pre-application meetings where the program and scoring criteria will be described. At these meetings the application form will be reviewed and all questions will be answered.
Meeting dates are Tuesday, January 20, at 10 a.m. and Thursday, January 22, at 10 a.m. Meetings will be held at the Lake Erie Islands Regional Welcome Center, 770 SE Catawba Rd., Port Clinton. Application deadline for this year’s program is February 28.

After blowing a 15-point, second-half lead, Port Clinton showed its resilience and came up with a big play in the closing seconds to eke out a 50-48 victory over Lake.
Emily Ashley scored on a three-point play with 23 sec-onds remaining to bring the Redskins back from a 48-47 deficit and account for the final scoring. Her basket came off a steal from Adrianna Hall as the Flyers were trying to run out the clock.
Lake trailed 45-37 midway thru the fourth quarter be-fore going on an 11-2 run to take the lead.
Following an opening-season loss to Bellevue, Port Clinton has won 11 straight games, with nearly every vic-tory coming in convincing fashion.
Port Clinton led for nearly the entire game, holding a 14-8 advantage after one quarter and a 24-17 lead at half-time. The Redskins led 33-18 midway thru the third quar-ter before the Flyers embarked on 30-14 run to take the lead late in the fourth quarter.
Ashley led all scorers with 19 points, Hall finished with 12 and Bethany Urban had 11.

The Eagles, who were behind 36-32, went on an 8-0 run to take the lead for good and held a 44-40 lead after three quarters. Behind Noah Smith, Eastwood put the game away in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Redskins, 15-6. Smith scored six of his 12 points in the final period as the Eagles pulled away.
Port Clinton took a 15-11 lead after the first quarter before the Eagles rallied to tie the score at 28 at halftime.
Eastwood’s Tim Hoodlebrink led the way with 15 points, followed by Zach Jacoby, who finished with 14.

Since graduating from Oak Harbor High School in 2003, J.D. Bergman has been pursuing his dream to be an Olympic champion and the best wrestler in the world. The road has been rigorous but he has seen some great success, including 10 national titles. Of recent, he beat a couple of Russians and brought the gold back from Rio a few weeks ago. (The plan is to make that a habit.)
Bergman is headed to Colorado in January, Cuba in February, and Belarus in March to start his winter tours where he is excited to compete!
J.D. Bergman has been very fortunate to be one of five US athletes chosen for a new crowd funding platform called Pursu.it. This platform allows world class athletes to raise money to support their dreams. Bergman’s jour-ney thus far has been incredible. To help keep this mo-mentum, he needs to raise awareness of his campaign and drive traffic to the web page.
B-C-S Superintendent Guy Parmigian spoke with Berg-man by telephone as he prepared to head off to Colorado Springs for training. “I am impressed by the drive, spirit, and resiliency of J.D. Bergman as he pursues his goals. He has worked to overcome many obstacles, and his hard work is paying off,” Parmigian said. Parmigian also talked with Bergman about the costs involved in training and competing on the road to the Olympics and it is quite costly. Bergman commented, “If many give a little, it will be a lot. I would appreciate your consideration of a dona-tion.”

Facing a Margaretta team that has played well thus far, not to mention the fact that it handed St. Mary CC its only defeat of the season, Danbury fell to the Polar Bears, 83-32, in non-conference action.
Margaretta led 27-8 after the first quarter and broke the game open by outscoring the Lakers, 24-3, in the second quarter to take a 51-11 lead into halftime.
Bailey Kimberlin led the Bears with 18 points and Toby Miller, son of Danbury Middle School Principal Joe Mill-er, scored 17 points, including three 3-pointers.
Hunter Stinchcomb led the Lakers with a game-high 18 points and Ryan Chapman chipped in with five.
Danbury, which is playing without two key players, Grady Mark and Seth Vargo, is now 1-6 on the season.

After losing in the first game, Oak Harbor rebounded to defeat Lima Central Catholic, 65-53, and finished third at the Lima McDonald’s Holiday Classic.
The Rockets, who lost to the host, Lima Bath, in the first game, jumped out to a 14-11 lead and held a 25-21 ad-vantage at halftime before slowly pulling away. Holding a 39-34 lead midway thru the third quarter, Oak Harbor finished the game on a 26-19 run to put the Thunderbirds away.
Andrea Cecil, who battled a knee injury, led the way with 25 points and 11 rebounds, and Maddy Rathbun con-tributed with 15 points and eight boards.
In all, four Rockets finished in double figures. Emma Barney had a double-double, finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Abby Dornbusch contributed with eight points and three assists.
It was a big win for Oak Harbor, which had lost five
games in a row after starting the season 3-1. Currently, the Rockets are 4-6 and 2-3 in the Sandusky Bay Conference.
Madison Stolly led the Thunderbirds with 12 points, Sydney Santaguida and Kayla Verhoff both finished with 12 and Liz Taflinger chipped in with 10.
Boys BasketballPerkins 67, Oak Harbor 56Perkins grabbed an early lead and never looked back in
its 67-56 defeat of Oak Harbor. The Pirates raced out to a 16-4 lead and led 18-9 after
one quarter before slowly building the advantage from there. Perkins held leads of 31-19 and 49-36 after the sec-ond and third quarter, respectively.
Connor Roesch led all scorers with 21 points and team-mate Alec Speer had 16, including four 3-pointers. Will Rickard was the third Pirate to finish with double figures, scoring 11.
DeShawn Johnson, who returned from injury, scored 15
points and Tyler Sievert contributed 10 to lead the Rock-ets.
Oak Harbor is now 1-7 and 1-3 in the Sandusky Bay Con-ference.
Bellevue 62, Oak Harbor 50Bellevue hit 10-of-11 shots in the first quarter as it built a
big first-half lead in its 62-50 defeat of Oak Harbor.The Redmen led 25-12 after one quarter and, after
watching the Rockets get to within seven points at 30-23, finished the half on a 7-0 run to take a 37-23 lead into halftime.
From there, Bellevue slowly built its lead, which rose as high as 22 points.
Dylan DeWitt led the Redmen with 17 points, including three 3-pointers, Thomas Pressler had 11 and Seth Linder finished with 10.
Oak Harbor’s Tyler Sievert led all scorers with 21 points and Cole Weirich had eight.
Rockets stop the bleeding with key win
The Benton-Carroll-Salem Board of Education met on December 18 for their regular meeting and Oak Harbor Middle School was the District Highlight, a monthly fea-ture at Board meetings. Principal Marie Wittman intro-duced math teacher Mr. John McKitrick and a group of his 7th grade students who were present for the meeting. This group used classroom lessons and activities with Board members, the Superintendent, and the Treasurer to demon-
strate the depth of knowledge required by new mathematics standards. Board members were impressed with the stu-dent’s level of engagement and knowledge level.
In other business, the Board approved the monthly finan-cial report of Treasurer Tim Coffman and appointed Mrs. Jamie Tooman as President Pro-Tempore for the Board’s January Organizational Meeting, which is required by Ohio Revised Code. The Board accepted several resignations for retirement purposes, including Carol Jensen (Kindergarten teacher), Deb Triana (middle school teacher), and Joyce Lenz (middle school secretary). The Board also accepted a gen-erous donation from Materion Brush, Inc. in the amount of $657 to fund a student field trip to Imagination Station, as well as a donation of $650 from the Free Masons Lodge in Fremont, Ohio to benefit students at Oak Harbor High School.
The Board approved a three year administrative con-tract for Mr. James Boss to serve as the district’s Director of Student Services (Special Education) effective on August 1, 2015. Boss currently serves the district as a school psy-chologist, a position he has held for the past five years. He will replace Mrs. Judy Peters who will retire after serving the district as a teacher and administrator since 1985.
Board members also approved several individuals as sub-stitute employees, approved the Ottawa County Interagen-cy Agreement, approved the payment of dues to the Ohio School Boards Association, approved a job description for the Board Office custodian, and held an executive session.
The B-C-S Board of Education will meet next on January 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Board of Education Office for its 2015 Organizational Meeting. This brief organizational meeting will be followed the Board’s January regular meeting. Please note that this date is a change from the Board’s regular meeting time, which is the fourth Tuesday of each month.
