MUSIC AT THE BASILICA Music for Corpus Christi This Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi). Of particular note is the pre-scribed sequence, Lauda Sion Salvatorem. It was written by St. Thomas Aquinas around 1264, at the request of Pope Urban IV for the new Mass of this feast. The melody is from the 11th-century sequence Laetabundi iubilemus attributed to Adam de Saint-Victor (d. 1146), a prolific French composer of hymns and poetry noted for their rhythm and imagery. St. Thomas Aquinas composed three other Eucharistic hymns for the feast as well (one of the others, Pange Lingua, we sing on Holy Thursday). At Offertory, the Schola will sing a setting of the Eucharistic antiphon O sacrum convivium by Roberto Remondi (1850-1928), an Italian composer of sacred music, chamber music, and organ music, including a treatise on organ registration. A celebrated organist, he studied at the Milan Conservatory and the Paris Conservatory, and was organist of Milan Cathedral. He was the organ teacher of Pietro Yon (of St. Patrick’s Cathedral) when Yon studied at Turin Conservatory. Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) is the composer whose setting of the Eucharistic hymn Ave Verum we sing at communion today. He was one of the foremost French composers of his generation, and his musical style influenced many 20th-century composers. At the age of nine, he was sent to music college in Paris, where he was trained to be a church organist and choirmaster. Among his teachers was Camille Saint-Saëns, who became a lifelong friend. After graduating from the college in 1865, Fauré earned a modest living as an organist and teacher, leaving him little time for composition. When he became successful in his middle age, holding the im-portant posts of organist of the Église de la Madeleine and director of the Paris Conservatoire, he still lacked time for composing; he retreated to the countryside in the summer holidays to concentrate on composition. I wonder if he ever bumped into Remondi? By his last years, Fauré was recognised in France as the leading French composer of his day. Fauré's music has been described as link-ing the end of Romanticism with the modernism of the second quarter of the 20th century. When he was born, Chopin was still com-posing, and by the time of Fauré's death, jazz and the atonal music of the Second Viennese School were being heard.

During this year of Mercy, it is more important than ever to be actively aware of

the needs of our brothers and sisters in need. The Cardinal’s Appeal addresses a wide range of human needs in neighbor-hoods of the Archdiocese. Many people and whole families are in crisis due to changes in economy as well as challenges that come to them through illness or accidents. In addition, the Car-dinal’s Appeal assist in the education of youngsters and the care for older people who have become frail, including nuns and priests.

Please be generous in response to the Cardinal’s Appeal. Every year the Archdiocese sets a goal for each parish. This year the goal for the merged parish of St. Patrick's Old Cathedral and the Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood is $47,000. Please pray over this and make a gift that will assist those in need around us. You can learn more about the Appeal at www.cardinalsappeal.org

BULLETIN NEWS – MAY 28-29, 2016

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND:

The Memorial Day holiday is being observed on Monday,

May 30th. This will be a long, 3-day weekend for most of us. Keeping that in mind,

please be aware that thousands of people will be out and on

the roads; if you plan to travel, especially if you are the driver of a motor vehicle, keep your wits about you, pay attention,

STAY OFF YOUR CELL PHONES AND TABLETS

while driving, and do whatever is within your control to stay

safe. Enjoy the weekend – we hope the weather cooperates –

but again, BE SAFE. REMEMBER: The rectory office will be closed on Monday, May 30th, in observance of Memorial Day. SAINT ANTHONY NOVENA: Tuesday, May 31st, will be Week 12 of our Saint Anthony Novena. Jeanie Sama will be distributing envelopes with a little memento of Saint Anthony. These envelopes also will be your donation envelopes which will be collected before the communion portion of the Mass on June 7th. Tuesday, June 7th is the 13th and, there-fore, the last novena for the year. Saint Anthony bread will be distributed after this final novena Mass. Reminder 1: Monday, June 13th is Saint Anthony’s Feast Day, and we will have a 12:10 PM Mass on that day. Saint Anthony bread will be distributed after Mass on this day, as well. Reminder 2: Saturday, June 11th, is the annual Saint Anthony Society of Giovinazzo Mass which will be celebrated by our former pastor Father Fabian Grifone, O.F.M. The Society’s religious procession with the St. Antony statue will follow immediately after Mass. SAN CALOGERO: There is a statue of San Calogero which has been downstairs in our church hall for quite some time. The statue had suffered some serious defects and was in need of extensive repair. Angel Marinaccio, a life-long resident of Little Italy and an individual who loves our church as this is the parish she grew up attending, reached out to an-other Little Italy (former) resident for help. Teddy Gregoris grew up on Elizabeth Street and, as we’ve recently discovered, has hands of gold. Teddy volunteered to repair the San Calogero statue at no cost to Most Precious Blood Church. In addition, he used his own supplies to get the job done – and what a magnificent job it is! Everything has been re-paired and repainted where necessary, the statue looks beautiful, and it will soon be brought up from the hall into the church itself. Our very sincere thanks and gratitude to Teddy for what he did for us, and to Angel for recommending Teddy in the first place. We hope God blesses both of you and your families for the generosity and thoughtfulness shown to MPB Church. MPB SENIOR CLUB: This past Tuesday, our ‘coffee social’ after the 12:10PM Saint Anthony Novena Mass was well-attended and successful once again. We would like to thank Patricia Valentino for her contribu-tion of delicious Italian cookies, and Vivian Catenaccio who contributed a special (scrumptious) Limoncello sponge cake, both of which helped make this week’s event even sweeter.
