The banknote and coin changeover continues

CHECK

YOUR MONEY!

Sweden’s banknotes and coins

The banknote and coin changeover continuesIn 2015, the Riksbank began issuing new 20, 50, 200 and 1,000-krona banknotes. In October, the new 100-krona and 500-krona banknotes will be introduced. We will also have new 1-krona, 2-krona and 5-krona coins. The new banknotes have new security features that provide better protection against counterfeiting, and the coins will be smaller, lighter and nickel-free. In 2015, the Riksbank began issuing new 20, 50, 200 and 1,000-krona banknotes.

For a period, both the current and the new banknotes and coins will be in circulation at the same time. The current banknotes and coins will gradually become invalid (apart from the 10-krona coin which will not be replaced). So as not to risk being left with invalid banknotes and coins at home, pay with them or deposit them in your bank account as soon as possible.

Please bear in mind that it may be difficult for shops and banks to accept large volumes of coins, particularly when we reach the final stage of the changeover. Don’t leave it too late.

New banknotes in October 2016In October 2016, the Riksbank will begin to issue new 100-krona and 500-krona banknotes with new motifs. It may take some time before you see a new banknote as the current 100-krona and 500-krona notes will still be in circulation at the same time for a while.

New coins in October 2016In October 2016, the Riksbank will begin to issue new 1-krona, 2-krona and 5-krona coins. The 10-krona coin will remain unchanged. It may take some time before you see a new coin as the current coins will still be in circulation at the same time for a while.

The new coins are nickel-free and lighter and smaller than the present coins.

Banknotes that become invalid after 30 June 2017The current 100-krona and 500-krona banknotes can be used as usual until 30 June 2017.

Important dates

• 30 June 2017: the last day the notes can be used for payment.

• 30 June 2018: the last day the notes can be deposited in a bank account.

Don’t leave it too late!

Banks and shops may be limited as regards accepting banknotes. Contact your bank for further information if you have large amounts of banknotes to deposit.

After 30 June 2018, the Riksbank can redeem the invalid banknotes for an administration fee of SEK 100.

Why the banks have to ask questionsWhen you want to deposit money at the bank or make some other transaction, you must be prepared to answer questions about where the money comes from and to show valid identification. In some cases, the bank may also need to see contracts, receipts, invoices or other documents that prove how you received the money. This relates to the Act on Measures against Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing, which specifies, among other things, that banks are obliged to find out where deposits come from.

This check has to be made even when there is no suspicion of a crime. The aim of the Act is to prevent banks and other financial companies from being used for money laundering, that is money from criminal activities being converted into money that can be deposited in a bank account and used. These regulations apply to all financial companies in the EU.

The Riksbank also complies with the Act on Measures against Money Laundering.

Coins that become invalid after 30 June 2017The current 1-krona and 5-krona coins can be used as usual until 30 June 2017.

The same applies to the old 2-krona coins, if you have any. However, it may be difficult to pay with the old 2-krona coins, as they are rarely used for payments nowadays.

Important dates

• 30 June 2017: the last day the coins can be used for payment.

• 31 August 2017: the last day the coins can be deposited in a bank account.

Don’t leave it too late!

It may be difficult for shops and banks to accept large volumes of coins, particularly when we approach the final stage of the changeover. Turn to your bank or local shop for more information.

After 31 August 2017 it will no longer be possible to redeem the invalid coins at the banks or the Riksbank.

Please note that all of the current 1-krona, 2-krona and 5-krona coins will become invalid, not just the coins pictured above.

Which coins are not being replaced?

The 10-krona coin and commemorative and jubilee coins will not become invalid in 2017. All of the öre coins are already invalid and cannot be used for payment or redeemed at the banks or the Riksbank.

Tilt the banknote – to make sure it’s genuineThe new banknotes have new security features which make them difficult to counterfeit. If you tilt the banknote, you can check that it’s genuine.
