Summer in the city

July is a wonderful time to visit both Tallinn and Estonia.

Summertime is in full swing, meaning lots of events and festivals taking place all over the country.

One of the most important festivals is of course the Song and Dance Celebration (4-6 July). Every five years the Song and Dance Celebration takes place in Estonia. This year’s theme is “Touched by Time. The Time to Touch”. 187,800 spectators attended the last Song and Dance Celebration and 35,320 performers took part. The Estonian Song and Dance Celebration is on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. One of the top moments of the Song and Dance Celebration is the procession through the city. Participants dressed in traditional folk costume walk, dance, play, and sing, and tens of thousands of spec-tators line the streets.

Taking place at the same time (3-6 July) are the Tallinn Medieval Days, where Tallinn’s medieval past comes to life with a medieval market, and other

medieval themed activities that promise to be fun for the whole family.

Tallinn is not only a medieval city, but an impor-tant port town as well. The Maritime Days will take place 18-20 July, bringing visiting ships and steamers to Tallinn’s harbours..

While there is plenty to keep you busy in Estonia’s capital, there is also plenty to see and do outside of Tallinn. The annual Viljandi Folk Music Festival celeb-rates its 22nd anniversary this year with the theme “play”. The festival attracts international artists and fans, making it a must-see event for any folk music lover.

No matter what your interests are, you are sure to find something in Estonia.

Happy travels!

Viewing Platforms

Kohtu Platform - offers one of the best views of the Old Town. The impressive tower of the Niguliste Church seems at arms length. The red tiled roofs with white edges are cha-racteristic of Tallinn. Tallinn B1.

Patkul Platform - shows both a view of St Olaf’s Church, and part of the city wall. The church was even taller in medieval times and the tallest buil-ding in the world in its time. Nowhere else can you see the city wall from a better angle. Tallinn B1.

Kiriku Platform - the platform at the end of Kiriku Street faces west and offers a view of splendid and roman-

tic sunsets. Tallinn B1.

Raekoja plats

Tallinn’s Old Town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The Town Hall Square (Raekoja plats) is Northern Europe’s best-preserved medieval town hall square and was built at the beginning of the 1400s.

Tallinn Old Town H 1-2.

Blink and you might miss this narrow passageway off of Vene. Built in 1246, St. Catherine's Monastery (Püha Katariina klooster) is the oldest buil-ding in Tallinn. This passageway is also known as the Latin Quarter of Tallinn, and where you can find one of Tallinn’s first Italian restaurants. Tallinn Old Town H 2-3.

The Town Hall Pharmacy (Raeapteek) is one of Europe's oldest pharmacies, which still operates in its original loca-tion, in the Town Hall Square. Tallinn Old Town H 1.

The Tall Hermann Tower (15th century) on the southwest corner of the hill, and the blue, black, and white Estonian flag signify independence and freedom for Estonians. Today, Toompea is the centre of Estonian government and the Rii-gikogu (parliament). Look for the pink building behind the Russian Orthodox Aleksander Nevsky Cathedral. Tallinn B1.

The Kiek in de Kök tower is the entrance to historical underground bastion tunnels. In Soviet times they were supposed to serve as bomb shelters and protect the communist elite in case of a war. Kiek in de Kök means, “look into the kitchen”

in Low German, as this was one of the main things soldiers spent their time doing while on the lookout for intruders. Kiek in de Kök dates back to the 15th century. The tower is 38 metres tall, and the walls are four metres thick.Komandandi tee 2, Tallinn B1.

Climb the stairs of the St Olaf Church and you will discover not only the lower town beneath but also the magnificent palaces facing the slopes of Toompea Hill, and the upper town. The old town of Tallinn is divided into a lower and upper part. The lower town was inhabi-ted by hanseatic traders and the upper town, or Toompea was inhabited by nobility. Lai 50, Tallinn Old Town E2.

A fascinating museum about Soviet his-tory in Estonia is located on the top floor of the Viru Hotel. The hotel rooms were under KGB surveillance. The rooms were equipped with micropho-nes, and small holes were made in the walls, where cameras could be placed to take pictures of hotel guests.

The museum is only accessible by gui-ded tour. Tours run daily and are held in English, Finnish, Russian, and Estonian. English tours book up quickly so boo-kings are recommended. Viru väljak 4, Tallinn B2.

Fat Margaret (Paks Margareeta) is the most important fortification tower in Tallinn. She was built in the early 1500s. The diameter of the tower is 25 metres and the walls are up to 6.5 metres thick! She was constructed to protect Tallinn from intruders from the sea. Fat Margaret is often the main entrance gate and first encounter for visitors to the Old Town in Tallinn, if arriving by sea. Sometimes you just don’t have enough time to see everything, but on the Tallinn City Tour you just might. Three lines run daily, and best of all, each one passes through the Port of Tallinn, making it even more convenient. The tour operates in ten different languages and is guide by a recorded audio track that follows the sequence of the sights. One ticket is valid for 24 hours. This means that you can travel on all three routes in one day. If you purchase a 24-hour Tallinn Card then your journey on the Tallinn City Tour is free.

A quick history of the city of Tallinn

Outside of the Old Town

Kalamaja (Fish house) is a historic suburb filled with wooden houses and old factories. From the 14th cen-tury, Kalamaja has served as Tallinn’s main fishing port and was home to fishermen and fishmongers. When the railroad connected Tallinn with St. Petersburg in 1870, many factories opened. The colourful wooden hous-es you still see today were built in the 1920s and 1930s to house the grow-ing working population. Kalamaja has seen a revival over the last few years as artists and other bohemian types moved in for the large spaces and cheap rent. Restaurants and cafés began to open, and the area con-tinues to grow .

Have you ever seen the hull of a real submarine from below? Or better still, crawled through the narrow liv-ing and working quarters of a fully refurbished sub from the 1930s? The submarine Lembit was one of two Estonian submarines built in the UK in the mid 1930s. Another sight is an authentic replica of the Short Admiralty Type 184 seaplane, a British two-seat reconnaissance, bombing, and torpedo carrying folding-wing seaplane used in the Estonian war of Independence in the early 1920s and later for mail service. The museum is located in the former seaplane hangars built during WWI

by the Russian tsar. The construc-tion is architecturally unique since it was the largest armoured concrete ceiling in the world at the time of construction.

Küti 17 / Vesilennuki 6, TallinnBy tram: No. 1 or 2 from the city cen-tre to the Linnahall stop. From there, by foot along the Cultural Kilometre trail.

Patarei Prison gives an eerie glimpse into gloomy Soviet era prison life. For a small entrance fee you can take a self-guided tour through the dark halls of this old sea fortress that has served as barracks, and then as a prison during Soviet times.

Kalaranna 2-2aBy tram: No. 1 or 2 from the city cen-tre to the Linnahall stop. From there, by foot along the Cultural Kilometre trail, just before the Seaplane Harbour.

Kadriorg Park is the area that houses the Presidential Palace (Presidendi kantselei) and the Kadriorg Palace (Kadrioru loss), and the KUMU Art Museum. (All located on Weizenbergi). Kadriorg means Catherine’s Valley in Estonian, and dates back to the 18th century. The park and the palace were built by Peter the Great, who apparently helped in its building. As was cus-tomary at the time, the main house was named after his wife. There are plenty of other things to see in this beautiful and prestigious park. From the Kadriorg Palace, head straight along the park trail to the Russalka monument, located at the shore of the Gulf of Finland. The famous Song Festival Grounds (Lauluväljak) are only a short walk from the park as well.

Pirita is an area located a short distance to the east of the city centre and offers a variety of things to see and do. Start by visiting the ruins of St Birgitta’s Convent ruins (Pirita klooster) whose colourful history dates back to the 15th century. A stroll through the ruins and the surrounds, including the small cemetery, is a moving reminder of the past. Its proximity to the Pirita River and the beach makes it perfect as part of a day excursion. The 2km long beach can attract up to 30,000 visitors a day in summer. Also located a short distance from the beach is the city’s Botanical Gardens (Botaanikaaed) and the famous Tallinn TV Tower (Teletorn), which is a must see as it not only pro-vides a number of interactive exhibits but also offers one of the best views of the city and the district. A starting point for information on these can be found at:

Tallinn TV Tower (Teletorn) - Kloostrimetsa tee 58A, Tallinn

Botanical Gardens (Botaanikaaed) - Kloostrimetsa tee 52, Tallinn.

Visitors can catch a glimpse of the Estonian countryside and village life from the past. The venue has a dis-tinctive rural atmosphere that includes various farm buildings as well as its own church, tavern, and schoolhouse. Several mills, a fire station, fishing net sheds, a dancing area, and a village swing add to the character of the place. Some of the country’s iconic windmills can also be seen. Various demonstrations, displays and interactive activities help bring the past to life and provide visitors with a fun and educational experience.

Chef Priit Toomits, one of Europe and Estonia’s grill masters has lit the grill and will be serving summery dishes as long as the Estonian summer allows. Grilled chicken and baby back ribs are sure to be a big hit, along with the gazpacho.

Kaks KokkaOr two cooks, as it translates to English is one of the newer addi-tions to Tallinn’s restaurant scene. Located behind Ö restaurant, Kaks Kokka offers a casual dining expe-rience with food that will certainly surprise. Service is professional, and the food is excellent. The roasted Atlantic cod with ash-baked potatoes, and smoky butter sauce is just one of these dishes that will surprise. We won’t tell you more, go try it for yourself.

Street food and more! The owners of Olde Hansa, Tallinn’s favourite medieval restaurant have just recently opened a small groce-ry store in the Old Town. The shop has a good selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, Estonian cured meats and cheeses, dry goods, alcohol, and more. What’s better is the takeaway street food counter that’s open at the front of the shop, where you can enjoy warm sand-wiches from 11.00 to midnight.

Like many European cities, Tal-linn’s Old Town is filled with hid-den courtyards. We stumbled upon the M.C. Grill Summer Garden courtyard, where you can enjoy a wonderful menu prepared by chef Hei-mar Kuuskler.

M.C. Grill’s menu is a combination of both clas-sic and modern dishes that incorporates season-al ingredients and offers something for every taste. The fried whitefish fillet with goat cheese & potato mousse, blanched vege-tables, and sea-buckthorn butter sauce is a good example of an Estonian twist on a simple fish dish. The tartness of the sea buck-thorn balances with the but-ter and compliments the delicate fish nicely. The

grilled lamb chops were a great summer dish with the mint and rosemary marinade as well. For dessert, try the chocolate medal-lions in tempura batter with clove ice cream.

During the summer months, the summer garden restaurant will have a pop-up grill kitch-en set up on 17 July, 31 July, 14 August, and 28 August. Heimar and his team will set up Green

Egg grills in the court-yard and talk about how and what they are prepar-ing, as well as grilling tips. Tickets are 23 and chil-dren 8 years and under eat for free. The price includes free range chicken, duck, pork, beef, sausages, fresh fish, and more, all cooked in 30 minute intervals, so you get to try a little bit of everything. Bookings rec-ommended. ■

Beer Garden is not your run of the mill sports bar, though you can watch sports there. Time and effort has gone into choosing the over 100 beers they serve, and in designing a menu that can be paired with these beers. “Beer, like wine, can be tasted and appre-ciated”, says Mirelle Sepp, man-

ager at the Beer Garden. “When you come you to visit us, you will be asked, not what you want, but which beer you would like”.

The beer list is divided up by type of beer: lagers, ales, stouts, fruit beers, and so on. They even have a champagne beer on the menu. Beer Garden wants to edu-cate the customer in all things beer, so in addition to their food

menu, they also offer a few sam-pling platters, to show you just how well beer can be paired with food. Take for example the cheese platter; this comes served with different fruit beers, as well as the champagne beer. You can even order a platter of oysters along with your stout.

On my visit, I decided to try the goat’s cheese salad to start, followed by the BBQ chicken. Portions are not stingy; in fact, the salad could be considered a meal in itself. The mix greens were tossed with different seeds and nuts, and the cheese was baked and served with sweet jam on top. The main course, the chicken was a half roasted chicken served with Beer Garden’s own house made bbq sauce. I particularly liked the addition of caraway seeds to the sauce, which added a bit of Eston-ian flavour.

Mirelle helped me choose dif-ferent beers to be paired with my

meal. She suggested the Belgian Stella Artois (served on tap) be paired with the salad, as the light-ness of the lager would compli-ment the jam-sweetened cheese nicely. The chicken, because of the rich flavours from the bbq sauce, called for a stronger beer. Mirelle suggested the Estonian A. Le Coq Imperial Ale (in bottle). Its richer flavour suited the spiciness of the roasted chicken.

Sit indoors, or if the Estonian summer weather allows, outdoors on their small street-side terrace. While there is ample seating on both the main floor and in the wine cellar, if you plan to come with a large group, it is best to book ahead. ■

“We were a group of 42 people and we decided to visit the Estonia Concert Hall. On the way back to the hotel, we stumbled upon the Beer Garden,

a restaurant in the Old Town. They had a great selection of beers and fantastic food, but the best part was that we got to sit together at one big table!

We danced until we could dance no more! Some of us even partied until morning and did not even make it back to the hotel…”

In Estonia, much like in other

European countries, July is the time for summer sales. Tallinn doesn’t have a main shopping street like other capitals, but its many shop-ping malls located throughout the city are convenient and easy to get

to. Rocca al Mare, for example, located in the suburb with the same name has a free bus that leaves regularly from the A and D termin-als at the port, stopping at Kristiine Shopping Centre as well.

The newly renovated Ülemiste Shopping Centre, near Tallinn’s airport has just undergone a mas-

sive addition to include many more shops. The renovations are still being finished, but from 16 June to 27 July, you can look for-ward to great discounts through-out the shopping mall.

The Tallinn Zoo is a favourite place to visit that never loses its fascination, even if you have already visited before.

In early June, the zoo opened the gates to a great environmen-tal education centre. A year-round children’s petting zoo is now open, which houses pygmy goats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and more. Bring along a few spare coins, because for ten cents you can purchase a bag of goat treats from the vending machine. Simi-

lar machines also sell bird feed for the many species in the zoo.

One of this year’s main attrac-tions is the polar bear cub Nora, who, with her mother is waiting for a new home, as theirs is under construction.

Tallinn Zoo is large, so for families with smaller children, it is best to rent a cart, which can fit up to two young children. The zoo has a number of cafes; be sure to book at least half a day to see everything. On Mondays, the indoor exhibitions are closed. ■

The Kalamaja district, informally known as a district of culture, con-tinues to grow. The latest addition opened in June. The Energy Discovery Centre operates in an old electric plant next door to the Linnahall, and is just a stone’s throw from the harbour.

The Energy Discovery Centre introduces visitors to electricity and power in a number of ways.

Almost everything is interactive. Information is available in Estoni-an, English, Finnish and Russian.

 The symbolic mud baths were

built between 1926-1927, as the old spa building was burnt during the First World War. In Soviet times, the beautiful building was a wor-kers care institution, but in the 90s, it was left empty, for ruin.

Thus, this thorough renovation could be considered an act of cul-tural preservation, in particular, because the original spa part has been restored in all its old glory. Original ceiling fixtures and floor tiles have remained the same.

A modern spa operates in the old part. Guests can enjoy a variety of saunas and pools. In addition, the courtyard is a secluded terrace with

a small pool to cool off in, in sum-mer. The beauty salons have also remained in the same place. Espe-cially fun are the curtain-lined wai-ting rooms, where you can enjoy the light and heat from a sun lamp.

The silent spa is in a separate part that offers the opportunity to bathe and go to the sauna peace-fully. Its specialties are low-tem-perature (35-65 degrees) saunas and a calm atmosphere. Children 14 and older can visit the spa.

The modern hotel and restau-rant are combined seamlessly with the old spa building. The colours of the hotel lobby are dominated by black and white, lines are clean and simple. The same style also continues in the hotel rooms.

The hotel offers a great view of Estonia’s best swimming beach and beach park. Plus, there is also the opportunity to enjoy the warmth of the summer on the spacious balconies, which can be found in each room.

Raimond Restaurant strives to use local ingredients. The menu includes, for example, fresh daily fish and tasty rabbit liver pate with ramsons mayo. The restaurant’s terrace is located beside the pro-menade, where you can sit and watch beach life. ■

Youth and beautyMedemis has your summer skincare covered.

Relax in the lounge after your procedure.

The Intraceuticals procedure.

TEXT KRISTINA LUPP, PHOTOS ANDREI CHERTKOV

Travelling is fun, seeing new

things, meeting new people, but travelling also takes its toll on your skin. After stepping off a flight your skin is left dehydrated and not looking its best. There is a solution –Intraceuticals. Celebri-ties like Madonna swear by this oxygen facial, giving their skin the boost it needs without an invasive procedure.

What is Intraceuticals? It is a one-hour facial procedure that uses oxygen under pressure to deliver specially formulated serums (con-taining anti-ageing ingredients, vitamins, and antioxidants) that hydrate the skin, leaving it firmer, tighter, and fresh. In other words, it leaves your skin looking fantastic.

Medemis offers Intraceuti-cals (1 hour, 120) in their conve-nient Tallinn city centre location. “Clients often come for the facial the day of an important event or before a party,” says Kristel Kaur, beauty specialist at Mede-mis. “After the facial you can put your makeup on right away and be looking your best for the eve-ning ahead.”

While Intraceuticals can become part of your regular beauty regimen, some of us have lines and wrinkles we would like to get rid of. Mede-mis also offers a range of facial and skincare procedures, including injectable fillers. Injectable fillers are beauty injections that fill lines and wrinkles for a longer period (up to 18 months). “I had read about Juvederm in a magazine and deci-

ded to make an appointment for a consultation at Medemis. The doc-tor suggested that the most effecti-ve and natural way to fill wrinkles around my nose and mouth would be with Juvederm”, said Anne, a satisfied client. “I was amazed to see the results immediately after the procedure! I was left looking younger and feeling great.”

Medemis offers free consulta-tions. Bookings can be made on-line through their website. If your wrinkles are bothering you, then why not meet with one of Mede-mis’ specialists to talk about the right treatment for you. ■

ÕllesummerThis annual music festival has been going for over 20 years. Top acts, from international stars such as Mika and the Manic Street Preachers, have taken to the stage in this four-day celebra-tion of music from both home and abroad.

The biggest festival in Estonia, Õllesummer manages to have something for everyone and its location within Tallinn means that it’s the perfect spot for those on a

short break to find out what Eston-ian music has to offer, as well as seeing some of the top acts from beyond these shores. This year’s festival will be headlined by Bastille (UK). Hurts (UK) have also con-firmed their attendance, making this their first big open air concert. Other artists include close to 100 Estonian bands and The Bootleg Beatles (UK), Svjata Vatra (UKR) and Spaghetti Swing (ITA). ■9-12 July, Tallinn

If there is any art exhibit you must

see while in Tallinn this summer, it is undoubtedly the retrospective exhibition focusing on the artworks of Nikolai Triik, one of Estonia’s most beloved and signifi-cant modern artists of the twentieth century.

Triik’s career spans an exciting era in Estonian history, which is poignantly displayed in his works. Figures like the artist Konrad Mägi take on a dandy-like persona a la Oscar Wilde in Triik’s portraits, indica-ting the decadence surrounding the Young Estonia movement around 1910.

“Lennuk“, a painting depicting a huge Viking war ship with a blazing red sail, is arguably the artist’s most famous painting, and is a landmark in Estonian art history. Similar Viking-themed paintings celebrate the Nordic character of Estonian identity. Equally important and no less impressive are his array of Estonian landscapes, often from Leetse, a small coastal town where the artist’s grand-father lived. We see a particularly expressive and delicate rendering of the white nights of Estonian summers so beloved by all.

Triik eventually turned to portraiture to sustain his income, and elegant images of fine ladies and gentlemen and the Estonian upper class dominate the last rooms of the exhibit, demonstrating Triik’s popularity throughout his lifetime.

The exhibit will be up until 28 Septem-ber 2014. ■

Tallinn’s public transport system consists of trams, buses, and trolleys. All three

use the same ticketing system. In 2013, a smartcard ticketing system was

introduced. If you plan on using public transport more than three times, this is

your best option. Smartcards can be purchased and topped up at R-Kiosks and

are transferrable. The Tallinn Card also allows you to use public transport for free.

Both cards must be validated by touching them to the orange card reader.

Detailed route plans are displayed at all the stops, or plan you journey ahead of

time on-line at: http://soiduplaan.tallinn.ee
