This report is submitted pursuant to Sections 108(a) and 306 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 (FISA or the Act), as amended, 50 U.S.C. §§ 1801 -1811 , 1821 -1829, 1841-1846. It covers all electronic surveillances, physical searches and pen register/trap and trace surveillances conducted under the Act by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), as well as electronic surveillances conducted by the National Security Agency (NSA) , during the period January 1, 2002 through June 30, 2002. 1. Applications Filed from January 1, 2002 through June 30, 2002 (U)
The FBI filed 29 applications with the FISC to conduct pen register/trap and trace surveillance, pursuant to 50 U.S.C. §§ 1841-1846, as amended by the by the "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001" (USA Patriot Act), Public Law 107-56. The FISC approved all 29 applications. There were 19 United States persons who were the targets of pen register/trap and trace surveillance, ~
