Meeting November 6 National Anthem

Each week President Colin has a different National Anthem for us to sing along with. This week we sang to the National Anthem being performed at the Melbourne Cup. President Colin welcomed guest speaker Wes Olson and his wife Dale. He was also pleased to welcome Andrew Pittaway, George Carter (Dad of past member Sonya), Kanishka Perera (friend of George’s from Sri Lanka), Patrick Allioux, Dorothy and Rod Scrutton and partners Jacquie Pittaway and Dellys Rodgers.

Max Anderson Colin was sad to share a letter of resignation, due to health reasons, from Max Anderson. Max has been a dedicated Rotarian over the last 50 years and a very active and involved member of the Rotary Club of Attadale for 35 years. We miss his delightful company and valuable contribution to our club. We wish Max and Elsa all the very best and look forward to presenting Max Honorary Membership at our Christmas Dinner.

Murdoch Student Emerging Leaders John went to hear the five students involved in the Rotary Club of Attadale programme do their presentations. The four that were involved in our Work Ready Seminar presented John with a bottle of wine which he very kindly brought to the meeting to be raffled.

St Yared Application John has spent many hours trying to get the Global Grant completed and ready for submission. He made a plea for any other donations for this project. Neil has done a great WASH programme that is almost complete. The submission will then go to Gail in Ethiopia before being submitted to the Rotary Foundation to be considered for a Global Grant.

Guest Speaker Wes Olson “HMAS Sydney”

Mick was pleased to introduce Wes Olson who has had a lifelong interest in firearms and military history. This led to eight years’ service in the Army Reserve, and resulted in the publication of his first book, “Bitter Victory—the death of HMAS Sydney”, in 2000. The story is told through official documents, as well as the diaries, letters and memoirs of the officers and men who served in the ship.

Dale Olson, Mick Donnes and Wes Olson

As a result of reading these documents and meeting the families who lost loved ones on the Sydney Wes was inspired to make sure that all those people who lost their lives would be remembered. He is now researching and writing the history of the 2/11th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force. Wes and his wife, Dale, are active members of the Army Museum of Western Australia Foundation.

It was a very interesting talk on a very important part of our history.

Winners Mal was delighted to win the Door Prize. Greg won the special bottle of wine that was donated by the MSEL students.

Opera at Twilight Stirk Park, Kalamunda Saturday, November 11th 2017. From Mick:

After the show is over ALL and sundry are then invited to the Donnes residence for port and tea and coffee and a biscuit or cake for a post opera review and a view of the city

We are located at 177 Railway Road Gooseberry Hill …some 2 minutes from the park and parking is in our drive and on the verge opposite and on the road of course. I’ll give everyone a mud map so you don’t get lost in the hills. Just let me know you are coming so we don’t order 40 cup cakes and I end up having to eat cake for the following two weeks.

Dog Show

Patricia has been given approval by the City of Melville to hold a Dog Show on April 14th, 2018. Selwyn and Robin have offered to help but she requires a few more people to go on a committee to assist her. Please email Patricia if you are willing to be on the committee. She would like all members to help out on the day.

Cakes Thank you, Abby and Colin for providing delicious treats for everyone to enjoy with their tea and coffee.

Abby did a fantastic job decorating her yummy cupcakes and slices.

Congratulations Rod

A Great Win

Love in a Shoe Box Nancy Bray is to be congratulated for the 20 years she has coordinated this worthwhile project. Nancy wrote a lovely letter to the Rotary Club of Attadale thanking all of the members for their generous support over the years. She gave special thanks to Jim Calcei for his assistance.

Rotary Ladies Lunch A group of ladies travelled out to Willow Pond, Cannington, where we enjoyed a delicious lunch and delightful fellowship in beautiful surroundings. Thank you all for coming and making the day so enjoyable.

District 9465 2018 Conference

Margaret River 16 - 18 March 2018

Please come and join the group from Attadale Rotary Club for a great weekend The Margaret River 2018 District Conference Committee has opened My Booking Manager for ‘Early Bird’ registrations which incorporates a small financial saving if payment occurs prior to 31 December, 2017. Bookings are available now at:

http://e.mybookingmanager.com/E21321182362790 Any other enquiries should be sent to [email protected].

The Conference is being held at the Quality Inn, Margaret River.

This venue is now fully booked so you will need to choose somewhere else to stay. BE AWARE - There is a chance that the Leeuwin Concert may now clash with District 9465 Conference. Leeuwin

Concert have been trying to get accommodation places in Margaret River to hold rooms for them. They will announce their

concert date in early November and the accommodation generally gets booked out within hours of the announcement. The

Conference committee are therefore advising Rotarians that this means they need to book now if they are going to secure

accommodation, and at a good price, because it is always expensive for the Leeuwin weekend.
