Our Lodge hosted what was said by many to
be “The Best Summer Convention in recent
memory!” and “This is what a Convention
should be like!” The turnout of volunteers was
nothing short of miraculous. We really did our
Lodge, the Southwest District, and the State of
Oregon very proud. Some believed that Ash-
land Lodge could not get enough volunteers
to host this convention, but we proved that
our Lodge has the Best People On Earth!
This bulletin is dedicated to the Members,
Spouses, Friends and Employees who sacri-
fi ced so much of their time to make this a re-
markable success.

Message From the First Lady It’s May 5th and I am refl ecting on what has happened in our Lodge in the last
few months. On March 24, Michael became Exalted Ruler, thus making me First
Lady of our Lodge. I knew that it would be an exciting and fun role and I hope to
serve the Lodge in a gracious and hospitable manner.
As wife of the Exalted Ruler, I did not know that I would not see my husband
anymore!! I keep remembering the slogan ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder’
and smile. I am both very fond and very proud of him. He and Fred worked many
hours in preparation for the convention and even before he was Exalted Ruler
spent many hours at the Lodge. There was much pre-planning to do and they did
it. The payoff is obvious. Not only is our Lodge now seen as one with class and
style (we threw a great party for the State), it also brought members together in a
way that is so important to our Lodge: caring and sharing. Caring about our build-
ing, caring about each other, sharing the burden of work and sharing the rewards
of a job well done. I am proud to be part of this organization and prouder still of
the commitment that so many made during the last week of April.
I am still learning what my role is and am committed to serving the Exalted
Ruler, members, spouses and friends to the best of my ability. One personal goal
is to remember members‘ names. Please forgive me and remind me if I seem at a
loss with your name....I do remember faces! Another goal is to support our events
and help raise money for the many charitable causes we support. If you have a
fundraising idea, please let me know.
Let’s keep the excitement and energy we experienced during the convention
going throughout the year.
Fraternally,
Mary Danca
First Lady
The Crying Corner
March 14 Donald Yates $240.00
March 21 Robert Seymour $255.00
April 4 Michael O’Dinwaller $50.00
April 11 Mary Hough $50.00
These members missed their winnings by not being
at the Lodge meeting when their name was drawn:
ER’s Message I am bursting with pride about how our Lodge stepped up to make this con-
vention a spectacular success. We are still counting the volunteers, but close to
200 people came out to spend long hours cooking, washing dishes, greeting,
driving, moving furniture, serving, pouring, cleaning, fi xing, protecting, counting,
depositing, parking, decorating and all the other jobs required to keep the party
going.
I have been asked several times how much money we made on the con-
vention. To answer that, we are certain we made money, but may not have fi nal
numbers for a month. There is still much bookkeeping to be done.
The compliments we received during the event were constant. The problems
were few and far between. I saw a few things that I would change if we were to do
it again, but really only a few. The biggest complaint that I heard was that we set
the bar pretty high for the next Lodge who will be hosting the convention. I hope
we can keep setting the bar high for all our events at the Lodge.
I could not have had a better partner in getting this convention planned. Fred
Hatfi eld, PER was my Co-Chair of the convention, and the two of us got to spend a
lot of quality time together. In March, I had about 2,300 minutes on my cell phone,
and I am guessing half of them were with Fred. Our Chair people did an excellent
job of getting their departments planned and organized. I would like to extend
my thanks to each of them for the time they put in over the last year. (They are
listed to the right of this article.)
As for the volunteers, I know I am repeating myself when I say how proud I
am of the amazing people who spent time working hard for the Lodge, but I think
it bears repeating. We are going to try to list each of you in this bulletin, and in
future bulletins. If we missed anyone, it was not intentional, you just did not get
onto my list. Please let me know if I missed you, as I would like to have a complete
record of all who helped. Thank you! Thank You! Thank You!
I am hopeful that we will have some lasting benefi ts for our Lodge from this
event. Not only fi nancial (and we all know that will help) but Fraternal. I believe
that the volunteers that came to help in most part had fun doing so, and in be-
ing part of this great event. I also believe that the volunteers got to meet other
volunteers and members of other Lodges from around the state, and I hope made
new friends along the way. This can only have a benefi cial eff ect on our Lodge
activities, and in the fellowship experienced at the Lodge.
It is time to look to the future at more opportunities to play, volunteer, and be
part of this great Lodge. The Luau will probably be over before this bulletin get’s
mailed, but I am sure Polly and her crew will have done a great job! Our ritual team
will be competing in Brookings on May 19th, and I hope you can come out and
witness this event. We have been practicing hard, and I hope we can take District!
The State Ritual Contest will be held at our Lodge on June 2nd. This is a big event
and we can use some help with breakfast, lunch and banquet dinner. It’s also fun
to see the seven state teams compete. The Family Picnic is coming on June 17th,
and if you want to help, let me know. This is always a fun day in the sun (we hope)
and good for all of the family.
I hope to see you at the Lodge soon, and fi nally, Thank You to all the Volun-
teers!
Fraternally,
Michael Golden
Exalted Ruler
INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS-O.S.E.A. PRESIDENT KAY ENGLUND-COOMLER ACCEPTANCE SPEECH I would like to give the Ashland Elks Lodge a big thank you for the fantastic job
they have done on this convention – I hope you have enjoyed it as well, and also
thank the Lodge, the District and State people for the support they have given me
through the years, and the great support from some very special people in my life
– my family and friends who I would like to introduce to you: Daughter, Diana Stark
and her husband Jeff rey Burke; Son, Glenn Bradley and wife Christine, Son, Marty
Coomler and wife Bev; Brother-in-Law John Coomler and wife Ellen and niece Zoey.
And three high school classmates, Karen Heilbron, Nancy Milhoan and Lynda Wein-
hold. Thank you for your support and friendship! Last, but not least, my husband,
Mike, whom I met the fi rst year I was Vice President!
First of all, let me tell you that I am very proud to be an Elk!
As a child growing up in Ashland, the Elks was a very important part of family
life – Mother used to chew her nails down to the quick waiting to see if my dad’s
erratic railroad schedule would have him back in town in time for some important
event; of the four of us coming to the family Christmas party, or summer picnic at
which I used to lifeguard at when the picnics were out at Jackson Hot Springs; and
my Grandmother used to help in the kitchen. Many of our meals consisted of the
meat brought home – won in the meat drawings on meeting nights.
I have told many of you that I am the 4th generation of 6 that have been initi-
ated into the Ashland Lodge. Elkdom is in my heart, my soul and in my blood!
Thank you for opening your doors to our gender – it is greatly appreciated!
It seems to be appropriate to be standing before you here in Ashland – the
home of Shakespeare – therefore the home of actors which is the beginning of our
Elk heritage. Many of our rituals are “scenes from a play”, and the performance in our
play is displayed by the manner we have shown to our local communities through
our very generous contributions of time and money. But somewhere along the
way we have erred – we thought we were doing the right thing by working behind
the scenes quietly assisting our communities and not so quietly with our socializing
we had created a rather rowdy image and we are working on changing all that. But
we must work harder to change that tawdry image, and we must use the media to
the fullest extent possible to start singing from the roof tops, from the balconies
and literally start bragging openly about what we do. My friend Sharon gave me a
phrase: “There ain’t no music until you blow your own horn” – so let’s go blow our
horns – just like the Baker City Drum and Bugle Corp. do! They’re not quiet are they?
The second issue that must be attended to immediately is the “cancer” (for lack
of a better word) that is becoming an issue in our lodges – the dissent amongst
the members. It truly is human nature that you are not going to like everyone you
meet and work with, but can’t another road be chosen to dispel that animosity?
When I was a younger person I worked for a dentist = when “chair side assistant”
was a newer thing; and I really like the dentist I worked for, I loved the intricacies the
work entailed, but the fi rst and second time we did extractions for a denture I had a
very hard time – I kept wanting to black out! I couldn’t stand all that red stuff ! But
I had to work – so I had to think outside the box and change the way I dealt with
the red stuff – so I started using something very simple – reverse psychology – I
talked to myself – silently of course – look at that – isn’t that fun – but I kept my job.
My point with all this is that we have to stop the bickering now. Members old and
new do not want to get involved with that type of atmosphere. At the OFO meet-
ing the other morning, while listening to the 2 politicians of opposing parties give
their speeches, a phrase struck me that one of them used: One of them asked the
question of the other: “Why are you so passionate about this issue”? We need to
step aside and crawl over the fence and put ourselves in the other person’s shoes
and view the situation from a diff erent angle. If the issue cannot be resolved, then
we need to agree to not agree, but can we remain friends/associates?
We have ‘MUCH ADO ABOUT ELKDOM”! Let’s get started!!
Michael Golden, Exalter Ruler, with David Carr, Grand Exalted Ruler, and his wife, Penny
The Happy CornerAt our March 28th meeting Garret Johnston’s name was drawn
