LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners, We don't think enough about the Ascension. In fact, only those who pray the Rosary seem to think about it at all. Yet, it is a crucial part of Christ's mission and message. It is the culminating moment, the finale, the final whistle, the moment in which his victory will be enshrined in heaven for ever. Jesus ascends into heaven as the living sacrifice that will continue to be the bridge between God and humanity until the end of time. His words at this moment, therefore, are critical. And what does he say? Two things. First, he sums up the message of salvation. He reminds his Apostles that he had come to earth to preach salvation, and then to make it into a reality by his suffering, death, and resurrection. Only because of Christ's preaching and passion is it possible for mankind to experience the salvation from sin and ignorance that they desire, the peace of soul that they yearn for. Second, he gives his followers a job. He calls upon them to be witness of these things. They will not be able to carry out their witness all by themselves, they will need the Holy Spirit, and so he promises that at Pentecost they will be "clothed with power from on high." But then they are to go to "all the nations" as Christ's witnesses. So, in the Ascension of our Lord, we come face to face with the core of the entire Gospel: Christ's saving message being transmitted to all people through the witness of the Church. For those of you have seen the movie “Risen”, the depiction of the Ascension was quite good, as well as some of the other Gospel accounts. If you have not seen it, do so.

My God bless you. Fr. Dan

THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD SUNDAY, MAY 28, 2017 LA ASCENSION DEL SENOR DOMINGO 28 DE MAYO DEL 2017

ESCUELA CATOLICA SAN JERONIMO EDUCANDO MENTE, CORAZON Y ESPIRITU

Catholic Radio 24 hours on your smart phone, plus read good Catholic news. Relevant Radio app download and listen.

HISTORY OF THE ASCENSION OF OUR LORD - The reality of Christ's Ascension is so important that the creeds (the basic statements of belief) of Christianity all affirm, in the words of the Apostles' Creed, that "He ascended into heaven, sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead." The denial of the Ascension is as grave a departure from Christian teaching as is denial of Christ's Resurrection. Christ's bodily Ascension foreshadows our own entrance into Heaven not simply as souls, after our death, but as glorified bodies, after the resurrection of the dead at the Final Judgment. In redeeming mankind, Christ not only offered salvation to our souls but began the restoration of the material world itself to the glory that God intended before Adam's fall. The Feast of the Ascension marks the beginning of the first novena, or nine days of prayer. Before His Ascension, Christ promised to send the Holy Spirit to His apostles. Their prayer for the coming of the Holy Spirit, which began on Ascension Thursday, ended with the descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday, ten days later. The Ascension of Our Lord, which occurred 40 days after Jesus Christ rose from the dead-on Easter, is the final act of our redemption that Christ began on Good Friday. On this day, the risen Christ, in the sight of His apostles, ascended bodily into Heaven (Luke 24:51; Mark 16:19; Acts 1:9-11).
