When people from different countries meet sometimes there are culture clashes that can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts. It can also lead to exciting meetings and new experiences.

Arjeplog in winter is an international melting pot, where people from all corners of the world meet. Usually these meetings are pleasurable and profitable for all parties. But sometimes there is a clash, mostly as a result of differences in language and culture.

Hundreds of Korean car testers are here now and they probably encounter the biggest culture shock coming to Lapland. For them everything is new and different. That is also the reason Cartest and Hyundai Kia Mobis have hired Rickard Eriksson to act as a bridge between the Koreans and the Swedes.

Rickard was born in Korea. At the age of three he was adopted by a family in Sweden. As a grown-up he lived quite a few years in Korea, learning the language and the culture. He then returned to Sweden with a Korean wife.

He is very familiar with both cultures and has a great interest in bridging the differences he has already encountered.

He says that the society in Korea is very patriarchal and hierarchical. You are judged by age, sex and position in the company. When he began as a co-ordinator at Mobis, it was hard for people to know how to relate to him, as he is on the lowest rung there, but now it is much better, he adds with a smile.

Conflicts & Excitement in Culture Clash

He explains that in Korea service is a very important thing. When you walk into a shop, usually both the owner and the staff greet you. Someone will follow your every step so they can assist you, should you wish.

Also, if you rent a room they will not only clean it every day, but several times a day.

Everything and anything is available all the time, people are used to being able to do and get anything on the spot, says Eriksson.

Another problem is that Koreans generally are shy and their English is not always so good. Many of them are also new here and do not know how things are.

In Arjeplog, on the other hand, the staff in the shops will leave you well alone until you ask for assistance. If you rent a house it is often only cleaned once a week and this, according to Rickard, is sometimes viewed as not such good service.

The fact that Arjeplog is very far away from bigger towns also makes getting hold of things harder and it takes longer.

Koreans are used to ‘bali bali’, which means ‘quick quick’, and they are very impulsive, he adds.

‘Bali bali’ is not exactly what the locals are most famous for, so here again there is a clash between cultures.

Heard from locals• Last Saturday night at Silverhatten there were some local men/boys who misbehaved badly. Among other things, they undressed on the dance floor and were using bad language. People wondered why the guards did nothing about these local men.

One local woman told us that she does not usually feel ashamed on behalf of other people, but in this case, she did. Many of the guests, espe-cially the women, found the behavior disgusting.

In reference to what we wrote in last week’s paper: “Some young local men also feared that they would lose the women to these foreign men, which happened quite a few times” we have heard many say that it is no wonder that some single women prefer spend-ing time with polite and well-behaved car testers instead of these local men.

However, it is important to say that not all locals are like this.

Prototype Almost Blocking the Main StreetDrottninggatan in the centre of town is a one-way street. There are parking slots on the right side of the street outside Mathörnan and Pizzeria Verona.

There is no parking allowed on the left-hand side of the street. Last week, there were cars parked on the right and this covered prototype was parked on the pavement on the left.

The truck had to really use his driving skills to pass between the two cars without damaging any of the cars.

Ruined Snow-mobile Trail by MistakeThe car testers that were responsible for the damage done to former mayor Albert Laestander’s walking and snow-mobile trail left Arjeplog last week but explained that it was done by mistake.

What happened was that the driver of the vehicle mistook the trail for a side road and did not observe any signs identifying it as a trail.

Also some fresh snow was hiding the snow-mobile tracks somewhat. Unfortunately he realised far too late and was already stuck by then.

Any laughing seen by the neighbours was not disrespectful or malicious but most likely through embarrassment.

Pedestrians on Slagnäs Road - commentWe received a mail commenting last week’s appeal by locals that people should not walk on the Slagnäs road:

“I’m one of the pedestrians who walk very often and since years in the morning and evening from our Hotel to Cartest and back.

We enjoy the morning and evening walk. Its healthy and makes a clear head.

I wear a yellow jacket with reflector stripes and I’m visible a few hundred of meters (the visibility is a question of clothes). A lot of car drivers take care of us and drive slow when they pass us.

There are others which even overtake at the same time when they pass us (and they have seen us before).

There are a lot of signs for elks and horses, but not for pedestrians.

Why should we stop walking? Why not put a sign on the road “pedestrian” and ask the car drivers to drive careful?

When asked to comment this mail, Claudia Zamorano, head administra-tor of the kommun explained that the kommun is not responsible for the Slagnäs Road - it is in the hands of The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket).

However, the kommun recently completed a walking path that runs parallel to the Slagnäs Road and joins Vaukaleden. At the moment it is covered in snow but Claudia promised to look into the possibility of having that path cleared even during the winter. We will keep you informed of developments concerning this issue.

What is good in Arjeplog?It is quiet here and I love to come and work here. It is so good to be able to drive on the ice.

I also like to interact with foreign people and I like to watch people doing simple everyday things, like working with a snow-mobile.

Harrys is a good place to meet friends and have a pizza.

I like the countryside and scenery here and am curious as to how it looks in the summer.

What is bad in Arjeplog?It is too far from Italy and little too small.

This is paradise for driving cars and learning to improve driving skills, but I don’t have the right car here to drive.

What music you enjoy?Rock, pop, country, Italian, all kinds of music except opera.

What is important in life?Generally that you are okay with yourself.

Serenity or inner peace is important. To feel good with your family and your job is important and that gives you serenity.

But you have to have inner serenity to appreciate what you have - it is a loop.

Claudia Zamorano is the highest official of the kommun or muni-cipal administration (kommunchef). Britta Flinkfeldt Jans-son is the political head of the kommun, the mayor, (kommunal-råd).

The politicians, headed by Britta, decide on what is to be done concerning the kommun. The municipal civil servants that answer to the kommunchef (Claudia) are responsible for planning,

directing and coordinating municipal activities. They are also reponsible for getting things done, following the directions and guidelines of the political decisions.

Claudia was born in Chile but as a small child moved to Hungary, where she grew up. At age 17 she moved together with her family to Varberg, south of Gothenburg in Sweden.

In December 2003, Claudia moved to Arjeplog with her Italian husband, Marco because he got a teaching job at the high school. She transferred from Varberg to Arjeplog and worked for the state employment agency. They saw this move as an adventure and planned only on staying a couple of years.

In 2008, Claudia was promoted to regional head of the state employment agency for Arjeplog, Arvidsjaur and Sorsele and was based in Arvidsjaur.

Their son, Alessandro was born in 2006 and she was tired of commuting to Arvidsjaur. So she applied for and got the job of Kommunchef (after Bo Wallin, who retired). She has held this post for one and a half years.

Claudia enjoys living here. She says you feel safe and secure in a small place and you think about these things especially when you have children.

Alessandro speaks Italian (from his father) Spanish (from his mother) and Swedish from the society he lives in and she is impressed that there are so many nationalities in the pre-school where he goes.

She works with the infra-structure of the kommun and these are the things that concern car testers and the local companies that work with car testers.

Claudia was very happy to meet the Hungarian testers from Krorr Bremse some years ago and they still keep contact and meet every so often during the season. She is so happy to speak and brush up on her Hungarian and the car testers from Hungary are so pleased to be able to speak their mother-tongue to the head of the kommun.

Gunnar Edholm, Tundra Art – this week’s local Name: Gunnar Edholm.

Age: 55.

Family: Wife Ingela, and 2 adult children. Mirja works at ATM in Arjeplog and Simon is studying to become a doctor.

Home: Arjeplog for the last 2 years. I grew up in Jokkmokk and then lived in Lycksele.

My father was from Arjeplog and we have a summer cottage here so Arjeplog always had a special place in my heart. Now I am so happy to be back, it is paradise.

Occupation: I have my own handicraft business, Tundra Art which I have run since 1984. I have always done some kind of handicraft, since I was a small boy.

Favourite food: Souvas (smoked reindeer meat) and smoked salmon, preferably smoked over an open fire.

Dream car: A camper that is comfortable, small yet spacious. The colour of the northern lights. And perhaps a Ferrari.

Present car: Opel Astra from 99, and an old VW Passat diesel. I am not so satisfied with the Opel and hope to buy another car soon.

Spare-time activities: I enjoy spending time outdoors in nature, that is where I get my inspira-tion. I like to fish and to hike in the mountains.

I photograph when I can and am always building and renovating (our cottage and our house).

What’s good in Arjeplog?The nature here is wonderful as well as the friendly people.

I would like the locals to be good ambassadors for Arjeplog so that both visitors and people who move here feel welcome.

What music do you listen to?Folk music, mainly.

What’s important in life? Generally I think it is important for us to take care of one another. Human encounters are important.

I like the winter here as it is so inter-national and there are people from the whole world for such a long period of time. This is quite unique.

Also, the mountains, midwinter, midsummer, the wide open spaces.

I am a hopeless romantic and even though I grew up in Lapland it never stops to amaze me how beautiful it is here. There is something very special about the light in Arjeplog.

What’s bad in Arjeplog?The way people drink alcohol here and in many of the places in the north is destructive and not very pleasant.

Gunnar at Tundra Art offers knives, jewellery, lamps, small scultures and other handicraft at his workshop. He makes his handicraft mostly from raw materials that he collects in the forests of Arjeplog such as reindeer horn, moose horn and birch wood. He also uses silver and some leather.

He sells to many museums and has many people in Germany, USA and Norway who sell his products.

He also sells from his studio/shop that is situated in Skomakaregatan just off Strömvägen. See opening hours on page 7.

If you ask locals who are older than about 30 about their favourite soft drink the answer will most certainly be ‘Dr Pepper’.

Dr Pepper is not a very popular soft drink in Sweden. In fact it is rather difficult to find, except in Arjeplog. To understand the reason for the popular-ity you have to look back to the 1960’s when there was a café called GeWes, where Mathörnan is today.

GeWes was THE place to be for all the teenagers of the time. Hanna ran the café together with her husband from 1947 until 1977, and she was loved by all. She introduced a new drink, Dr Pepper, and ever since then it has been the soft drink that locals prefer to drink.

The shops and restaurants that do not serve Dr Pepper are not as well regarded as those who do.

This weekend, from Thursday to Sunday, ICA in Arjeplog have a special offer: Nostalgia Special: two Buttebullar (bun with custard, that was often eaten at GeWes) and a Dr Pepper for 18 kronor. Try it, you might like it!

Special ‘Nostalgic’ Offer at ICA

This week, Sara and Yvonne at Norrskensglas Glass studio have started melting a new kind of glass that becomes the base of the molten glass they use for their products.

This new glass melts at a lower temperature and does not wear down the oven, the tools and the environ-ment as much as when they make the glass base from raw materials.

For Yvonne and Sara, this feels healthier for them and because the process is much quicker, they also gain a whole day of production.

Price-wise it is about the same in the end, without losing any quality of the final product.

Sara fills the oven with ovals of glass that will become the molten glass from which they create their products.

Inside the hot oven, the glass pieces melt to become a liquid mass.

New Technique for Norrskensglas Studio

Some of the home owners have had culturally related clashes. For instance Koreans are used to having up to plus 30° Celsius indoors so they can walk around in shorts. This is very hard in Lapland and has led to some discuss-ions with the home owners.

In Korea, food is very important and very different from the food served in local restaurants. To solve this prob-lem, Mobis have their own restaurant at the test facilities where the cooks prepare lunch and dinner every day.

Some like to prepare their own food in the private houses and the smell of Korean kimchi, for example, in the private houses is not appreciated by all.

The Korean car testers are usually here for ten weeks at a time, and they all live in private houses or apartments. They are very thankful to the people who give up their homes for guests from far away.

Many friendships have been formed between locals and Koreans and Rick-ard Eriksson is also deeply involved in teaching Mixed Marshall Arts (MMA) Submission Wrestling to locals.

Every Tuesday evening at 20.00 any-one who is interested in participating is welcome to Lugnetskolan (a former

school) on Lugnetvägen, 300 metres south of the Shell petrol station.

Here locals and car testers from all over the world are able to train, wrestle and have fun together.

“It is so nice that Rickard came to Arjeplog, he has a lot to teach us”, says Henrik Finnsson, teacher and European silver medalist in full contact karate.
